from 2001 to 2004, the Pats led a pretty charmed existence. yes, they had terrible injuries in 2003 and 2004, but they won a remarkable number of close games where the key plays tended to go their way. they were the best team in the league in 2003 and 2004, but even the best team can't expect to win 2 years in a row. to win 6 straight playoffs games, against 6 excellent opponents, requires some bounces to go your way, key plays to go your way, etc. 6-0 against teams that are only a small notch below you is nearly impossible without some luck. and in 2001, when we weren't the best team, all kinds of crazy things conspired to bring us a title.

but in 2006 and 2007 the story has changed. those bounces that used to go our way? well, we're not getting all of them anymore. Eli throws that ball about 3 inches higher than other QB's threw, and Asante couldn't come down with it. Eli lobs up a jump ball, and the WR makes a catch he can only make 1 out of 10 times, but that 1 time happens to be the one that counts. and last year vs the Colts, we are 1 play away from getting a first down and ending the game...but we just can't find that 1 play. 1 play made the season!! crazy.

what I'm trying to say is that it takes luck to win, even if you're the best team. it took a lot to win 3/4 years. we easily could have won the last two SB's, but bounces and close plays have a way of evening out.

even assuming we were the best team in the league for each of the last 7 years....well 3 Super Bowls is still about as good as you can hope for.
