being that this was the first game I watched this season, I payed close attention to the OT's. Light is a great tackle and Kaczur is serviceable. Watching Vollmer and O'Callaghan, they are 2 monsters. O'Cal is a road grader in the running game and seems to do well in the passing game but needs more work. Vollmer reminds me of a young Jonathan Ogden. I really see him pressing Light for starting LT next year or the next. I would like to see them find another Mankins for the right side.

Not to belabor the obvious, but I would like to find another Mankins at almost every line position. Easier said than done. But I agree that we may have found a diamond in the rough in Vollmer, who was generally considered pre-draft to be only a future RT, and a raw one at that. Clearly he has a rare combination of size, athleticism, and toughness, and has showed decent footwork so far to boot (pun intended).

I once thought that O'Callaghan might make a terrific future RG, but that doesn't seem to have panned out.

Vollmer is a beast. I think he is pushing for a starting job now.

Vollmer made a case last night to keep 8 OL and wait for LeVoir to come off PUP.

I noticed that compared to our other guys O'Callaghan and Britt tip the scales at 6'7 330lbs and 6'8 320lbs. They seem to be the odd men out in what is generally an OL of lighter, agile guards and tackles.

Just a small observation I was thinking about :D

he had a nice block on Orakpo last night, who is an absolute beast himself.

Yes, and LeVoir is 6'7" 306, it's a trend that started with Britt. Dante is trying to find longer arms on the edge, without giving up quickness. What's interesting is Wendell, Orhnberger, and Bussey are all 6'2", as is Billy Yates. Connelly and Johnson at 6'4" were actually going away from his move to get a little shorter and lighter inside.

Another Vollmer observation while I'm at it: He gets down to cut block well. Light, Ashworth, and Gorin were all good cut blockers, forcing DEs to drop their hands to protect their feet and giving Brady a clear throwing lane into the flat or out to the bubble screen. Kaczur is okay as a cut blocker, but both O'Callaghan and Britt seemed a little stiff getting down, I don't recall how LeVoir has done, but he did beat out Britt for #3 last season.

Thank's Box. I was in the process of learning more about the zone blocking scheme and reading some articles from Notre Dame and Florida State, the later included a passage from Alex Gibbs on what his ideal linemen are for the scheme, hence the post.

Do you have a link to those articles? I'm not an Alex Gibbs fan with the way his linemen attack knees, but it would be interesting to read.

The Pats have really done a good job with drafting offensive linemen from some small-time programs.

Mankins (Fresno State) was considered a "reach" by many draft experts when the Pats took him at the end of the first round. Kaczur was a third rounder out of Toledo. The Vollmer pick (Houston) was also called a big reach by many experts and Pats fans.

Yeah sure, when I say from each University though I should have said not by actual people on each program (atleast I don't think they are/were). They're from sites dedicated to each program. They're still pretty in depth though and provided alot of information, atleast for me anyways...

The second even includes a quote that links back to patsfans from a previous discussion here on zone blocking. :)

I'd have to say that the most offensive tackle I've seen was Haynesworth's tackle of Brady.. but that's just me :)
