Georgia Tech pro day notes | Atlanta Journal Constitution

1. Stephen Hill caught 12 of 12 passes, running routes crisply and apparently answering questions about his route running.

This from NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock, who was on hand: “I think he’s just kind of overwhelming from a height-weight-speed-upside perspective. I think he runs too well and catches too well to get out of the first round, in my opinion.”

Sports Illustrated draft expert Tony Pauline says Hill should be off the board by the 25th pick.

Wow.

Think about this – when Hill asked the NFL for a draft evaluation, he was told he didn’t have the potential to be taken in the first three rounds. He bet on himself, and that bet is almost certainly going to pay off handsomely. I think a fun blog would be to go back and look at the reactions to the blog reporting Hill was declaring.

Paul Johnson: “I think another year of [maturing and improving] would have helped. He would have been closer to graduation, but it looks like he’s made the right decision, looks like it’s going to work for him and I’m extremely happy for him and his family that it’s’ worked out for him the way it has.”

2. Mayock said he watched all of Hill’s film from the season and counted five or six drops with his 28 catches, calling two of them critical, drops against North Carolina and Clemson.

“But when you watch him catch the ball, he’s a natural hands catcher,” he said. “I think it’s more concentration and discipline than it is anything else.

3. It appeared scouts or coaches from most, if not all, 32 NFL teams were represented. Among the onlookers were Falcons coach Mike Smith and Bears coach Lovie Smith.

“It was nice coming in here, doing things on my own field,” wide receiver Tyler Melton said, “but more so I really appreciate Steve, how he showed out at the combine (and) brought all 32 teams (or 31). He gave us the best shot possible. I’m more than grateful to Stephen for that.”

4. Other players performing – Roddy Jones, Logan Walls, Jason Peters, Embry Peeples, Rashaad Reid, Steven Sylvester and Lucas Cox. You can check out their 40 times on Darryl Ledbetter’s Falcons blog here. My sense of things is they’re all undrafted free agent prospects. Hopefully they’ll all get into a camp and get a shot.

Melton made a fantastic catch on a deep sideline route. With the ball well over his head, he rotated in the air, falling backwards to bring the catch in.

“Just kind of natural instincts took over,” he said. I just did what I know how to do.”

Hill shows off route-running Ga. Tech's Pro Day - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

Running a variety of short and intermediate routes, Stephen Hill got in and out of his breaks fast and caught all 12 passes, including a fingertip-grab off the turf, form quarterback Eric Ward in Tuesday's workout. Vikings wide receiver coach George Stewart ran the receiver drills and ordered Hill through the route tree.

His eye-catching gold and silver Nike Vapor cleats only added to the spectacle. Scouts wanted to see something they didn't on film from Hill -- how he runs routes, if he repeats them with precision and how he tracks the ball over his shoulder and adjusts to poorly thrown passes. Hill was not a featured part of the run-first offense Tech operates.

Some scouts might be concerned with Hill's junior season, in which he dropped easily catchable balls but made the spectacular catches.

But scouts view him as a natural hands catcher. One observer credited him with five drops and 28 receptions last season.

Hill didn't run the 40-yard dash at pro day. He is 4.36 at the Combine tied for the fastest showing.

"I think I kind of showed enough," he said with a laugh when asked about not running at pro day.

Hill has been working out under the watchful eye of former Falcons wide receiver Terance Mathis.

"Basically it's just route-running, getting in and out of breaks, making sure I catch the ball with my eyes," he said. "Of course with my hands, but mostly with my eyes."

Tuesday's UCLA Pro Day was closed to parents, fans and media in order to "create the best environment possible for our outgoing senior student- athletes", so there's not much to go on. Apparently all 32 NFL teams were represented.

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

The story of the day was receiver Nelson Rosario who was graded as a late-round pick entering the year. Rosario measured 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches, 230 pounds then ran 40 times of 4.55 into a stiff headwind. His other marks included a vertical jump of 36.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 1 inch. All were outstanding results for Rosario, who caught the ball well during drills. Scouts were impressed the way the big pass-catcher was able to quickly get into pass routes and stay on balance exiting breaks. There's a feeling Rosario could add weight to his frame and eventually develop into a field-stretching tight end.

Safety Tony Dye, graded as a mid-round choice coming into the season only to struggle with several injuries, also turned in a solid performance. Dye was credited with an official 40 time of 4.56 seconds, posted 4.15 seconds in the short shuttle and 7.02 in the three cone. He also touched 36.5 inches in the vertical jump. These numbers were competitive with many of the safeties at the combine. He later looked smooth and quick in position drills.

Former Vanderbilt cornerback Jamie Graham, who transferred to UCLA only to miss most of the season with injury, also turned heads with a good workout. Ditto for Josh Smith, the receiver/return specialist transfer from Colorado who was forced to play in the secondary last season after injuries started to mount for the Bruins. Both looked camp worthy and should be signed soon after the draft ends.

Pauline also has this report from Cal-Lutheran's pro day:

At Cal-Lutheran, nearly a half dozen teams withstood bad weather to watch cornerback Justin Haulcy-Bateman workout. The small-school sleeper did not disappoint, running 4.49 seconds in the 40 and 6.7 seconds in the shuttle. His other marks included 15 reps on the bench and 37 inches in the vertical jump. Haulcy-Bateman will have a second workout March 26.

CLU players get chance to show off skills for NFL scouts » Ventura County Star

Haulcy-Bateman and teammate Luis Villavicencio took part in the first Pro Day in CLU history.

Scouts from the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Diego Chargers were on campus to run the All-American defensive backs through combine drills.

"It was really an amazing experience to see all the scouts come out to a small school like our school at the Division III level," Haulcy-Bateman said. "This is something I will remember for the rest of my life."

The CLU coaches started considering holding a Pro Day once they saw the number of scouts regularly attending CLU's practices last season and asking to watch film of Haulcy-Bateman and Villavicencio.

"Through the process of talking to them about the NFL Combine and Pro Days, quite a few of the scouts recommended that we hold our own," CLU head coach Ben McEnroe said. "We knew UCLA was holding their Pro Day Tuesday morning and USC's was Wednesday, so we figured this time would be convenient for them since they were in the area."

The scouts arrived in the early afternoon and first gave the players the Wonderlic test. Once that was complete, they headed to the weight room to do the bench press and vertical jump.

The final drills were conducted in William Rolland Stadium.

In breezy and cool conditions, Haulcy-Bateman and Villavicencio ran the 40-yard dash and the shuttle, completed the three-cone drill, did the broad jump and were put through positional drills.

Haulcy-Bateman, 24, had been preparing for the Pro Day by working out at Velocity Performance each morning at 5:30 a.m.

But unlike top prospects that usually focus all their attention on workouts before the NFL Draft, Haulcy-Bateman has still been attending school.

"The other guys there were making fun of me because I always had to go back to class after training," said Haulcy-Bateman, who ran a 4.49-second 40 and had a 37-inch vertical jump. "But I want to get my degree so I have something to fall back on just in case everything doesn't work out."

Haulcy-Bateman likely won't get drafted, but he would love a shot at joining an NFL team as a free agent in training camp. Along with his skills at cornerback, Haulcy-Bateman starred on special teams for CLU as a kick returner.

"I just want an opportunity to prove myself and show that I am capable of playing in the NFL," he said. "I feel like there are a lot of guys at the Division III level who get overlooked or may have had trouble in school or different family situations who were not able to go to a Division I school. Just to get the opportunity to make a team would be great."

And one more, this from Eastern Kentucky:

Another small-school prospect stood out Tuesday. Jeremy Caldwell, a top FBS cornerback and return specialist, timed in the low 4.4s, clocked 4.1 seconds in the short shuttle and touched 35 inches in the vertical jump. Caldwell could get looks in the final round for a team that needs both a dime back and kick returner.

Texas A&M had its Pro Day on Wednesday March 7.

Aggies hold NFL pro day | AggieSports.com | Bryan/College Station, TX

Defensive linemen Ben Bass, Eddie Brown, Michael Ebbit and Tony Jerod-Eddie, defensive backs Terrence Frederick, Trent Hunter, Lionel Smith and Coryell Judie, linebacker Garrick Williams, running back Cyrus Gray, kicker Randy Bullock and receivers Taylor Randle and Jeff Fuller all went through a number of drills and tests at A&M's NFL pro day.

Gray didn't run the 40 after posting a 4.47 laser-timed mark at the combine.

"I was happy with the time I ran at the combine, so I didn't need to go again," he said.

Gray worked through other drills, including posting an 11.31 in the long shuttle run. He is projected to go in the third or fourth round.

"I'm a good teammate, a high character guy," Gray said. "I perform on the field, and I love to compete and do what's best for my team."

Frederick got his first opportunity to show scouts the speed and skill that made him a four-year starter. Frederick ran an impressive 4.42 in the 40, second only to Lionel Smith's 4.41 on Wednesday. He also showed an ability to make decisive changes in direction during the defensive drills.

Judie, on the other hand, didn't need to prove much after a scintillating performance in Indianapolis where he ran a 4.48 in the 40. However, questions linger about his ability to stay healthy.

"Most teams are iffy because I'm injury prone, but I tell them I've been doing good rehab and I feel fine," Judie said.

For Jerod-Eddie, Wednesday finally gave him a chance to work out for the NFL scouts. He admitted he was disappointed that he wasn't invited to the combine, but he knows he played well at the Senior Bowl.

"I was surprised and a little bitter, but I thought I performed well at the Senior Bowl and that's the most important part -- with the pads on," Jerod-Eddie said.

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

Texas A&M senior Jeff Fuller, who did not workout at the combine, tested well in front of scouts today. The 224-pound wideout clocked under 4.55 seconds on a number of watches, reportedly running a best time of 4.53 seconds. He posted a vertical jump of 36 inches and broad jump of 10-feet, 3-inches. Fuller looked solid in pass-catching drills and looked comfortable running routes. He will work out again for scouts, as Fuller will participate in Ryan Tannehill's pro day on March 29.

Cornerback Terrence Frederick shaved almost one-tenth of a second from his combine time, clocking 4.45 seconds in the 40.

Texas A&M's Pro Day produces an interesting story: Jeff Fuller as a TE? | Texas A&M Aggies News - Dallas News

Cyrus Gray was another name make some noise on Wednesday. The running back ran "a 4.33 short shuttle and 7.33 cone drill" and "caught the ball well in drills as an RB and showed good quickness," making Gray a potential "middle of the second day type of guy". That could mean Gray goes off the board in the third or fourth round.

The most intriguing story to come out of Pro Day was Jeff Fuller, who is currently consider adding weight to become a TE instead of a WR. Brandt noted Fuller "ran 4.66 and 4.65 40s, had a 36-inch vertical jump, 4.33 short shuttle and had a 7.10 three-cone drill. Based on what scouts are currently saying, there a good chance Fuller could be making a switch, but at the moment, nothing is set in stone.

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Gray impresses at Texas A&M’s pro day; Tannehill sits «

A total of nine players worked out on field turf indoors in front of 18 teams.

Terrence Frederick, DB (187 pounds) — Ran 4.47 and 4.49 second 40-yard dashes. He worked out alright in his position drills.

Jeffrey Fuller, WR (225) — He’s going to work out again March 28 with Tannehill. He ran 4.66 and 4.65 40s, had a 36-inch vertical jump, 4.33 short shuttle and a 7.10 three-cone drill. He did positional workouts, but the feeling is he might be better adding weight and becoming a TE rather than being a WR.

Cyrus Gray, RB (204) — Stood on everything from combine, except he ran a 4.33 short shuttle and 7.33 cone drill. He didn’t have the right shoes on for that drill, but he’ll be there March 28 and I expect he’ll run again. He caught the ball well in drills as an RB and showed good quickness. He’s probably a middle of the second day type of guy: lower third-round pick, top of the fourth.

Coryell Judie, DB (196) — Had a 10-foot-3 broad jump, 4.52 short shuttle and a 7.12 cone. He worked in position drills. Looked OK, not real special.

Lionel Smith, DB (5-11 3/4, 192) — He’s someone we’re adding. He didn’t play a lot in college; when Judie was hurt he played in his place. Smith had a good workout, ran 4.46 and 4.48 40s, had a 38-inch vertical, 10-7 broad, 4.22 short shuttle, 7.01 cone and 16 strength lifts. He probably has a chance to be a seventh-round pick or a priority free agent because of his speed and athletic ability.

With QB sidelined, Fuller steps up at A&M Pro Day - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

Senior wide receiver Jeff Fuller offered scouts a pleasant surprise by participating in the workout. He had been expected to wait until March 29 (like Tannehill) to work out after it was discovered that he'd suffered a stress fracture in his foot at the Senior Bowl, but he elected to compete anyway. This fact was especially important because unlike most of A&M's other prominent prospects not named Tannehill, Fuller was the only Aggie invited to the Combine who wasn't able to work out in Indianapolis.

Fuller, measuring in at 6-4, 225 pounds, was clocked between 4.62-4.66 in a pair of attempts at the 40-yard dash and registered a 4.34 second time in the 20-yard short shuttle and a 7.10 second time in the three-cone drill. Fuller also had a 36" vertical jump, according to the official Twitter feed of Texas A&M Aggie Football. Fuller also participated in positional drills. The one drill he had performed in at the Scouting Combine was the bench press, where he lifted the bar 17 times.

In reality, the times are slower than scouts had hoped for Fuller but considering the fact that he's still getting back into top shape, talent evaluators will be quick to forget these results should the times improve on March 29.

Fuller is currently rated as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 18 receiver for the 2012 draft.

A pair of talented Aggie defensive backs also stepped up to work out despite the fact that each had participated at the Combine.

Cornerback Coryell Judie entered his senior season highly regarded by scouts but a hamstring injury forced him to miss nearly half of the season. He was clocked at 7.10 in the three-cone drill Wednesday, which is over two-tenths of a second faster than the time he had at the Combine (7.33) in this event.

A&M's other starting cornerback, Terrence Frederick, also helped himself by shaving nearly a tenth off of the 40-yard dash time he'd posted in Indianapolis. Frederick had been clocked at 4.54 seconds at the Combine but registered times between 4.42-4.46 seconds on Wednesday.

After posting an impressive 4.47 time in the 40-yard dash at the Combine, running back Cyrus Gray elected to largely sit on the results he had in Indianapolis.

Thanks for the updates. Hill's getting a lotta love from Mayock, but as long as one of our favorite Pass-Rushers or 3-4 DEs or Mark Barron are still available, I just can't pull a 1st-round trigger on a WR with so relatively little college production as Hill. I understand that Calvin Johnson himself would have difficulty looking good in that offensive offense, but...
