NFL Pro Days Schedule
By: John Morgan

Think the number of college bowl games has gotten out of hand? Check out the number of NFL Pro Days being held this year: more than 160 colleges and universities will hold an NFL Pro Day over a five week period beginning Thursday, March 1...

First two pro days took place today, at Missouri and Miami (Ohio). Pats reportedly had representatives at the Missouri pro day.

Scouts still flock to Mizzou pro day

Representatives from 16 NFL teams — or half the league — including two scouts from the Rams are on hand Thursday for Mizzou’s pro day. Among the other teams on hand: Super Bowl participants, the New York Giants and New England, and 2011 season playoff teams Atlanta, Green Bay and San Francisco.

A total of 16 Tigers are participating, including Mizzou’s four NFL scouting combine participants: tight end Michael Egnew, defensive tackle Dominique Hamilton, wide receiver Jerrell Jackson and defensive end/linebacker Jacquies Smith. Because those four are just a few days removed from the combine, their participation will be limited.

Egnew, projected as a mid-round pick, probably is the most highly-regarded in the group, although Smith is attracting interest as a potential 3-4 outside linebacker.

For others, such as wide receiver Wes Kemp and linebacker Luke Lambert, it’s a chance to get noticed and maybe work their way into late-round or rookie free agent status.

The Miami pro day is important, as offensive lineman Brandon Brooks, considered the highest rated player not invited to the combine, took the field. More than two dozen teams were on hand to watch Brooks today, and he did not disappoint.

The big offensive lineman measured 6-foot-5 and weighed 346 pounds. He completed 36 reps on the bench press, a number exceeded by just one offensive lineman at the combine. The same can be said for Brooks' 4.98 40 time, which included a 10-yard split of 1.71 seconds. Only Donald Stephenson ran faster at the combine. His vertical jump of 32 inches and broad jump of 8-feet, 9-inches were also superb. The 4.52 short shuttle time beat all marks from the offensive linemen who ran in Indianapolis.

After sizzling during the testing portion of his workout, Brandon Brooks continued to impress during a 10-minute segment of position drills. According to scouts Brooks moved well around the field, looking fluid and smooth. At one point during bag drills he knocked over a coach from the Pittsburgh Steelers after violently striking the bag with his powerful hand punch.

Brooks is slated for a second workout next Thursday, March 8, where he will solely participate in offensive line drills. The expectations from NFL decision makers at the workout is Brooks will be the first non-combine participant drafted in April.

Some notes from Friday's Pro Day at the University of Cincinnati.

- Depending on whose column you read, either 20, 22, or 28 NFL teams had representation at the Bearcats Pro Day. If it was indeed 28 then I would almost assume that the Pats had some representation there.

- There were three UC players that were invited to the Combine: RB Isaiah Pead, DT Derek Wolfe, and DT John Hughes.

Football Holds Annual Pro Timing Day - University of Cincinnati Official Athletics Site

Zach Collaros, Reuben Haley, Steve Hancoch, Tomaz Hilton, Randy Martinez, Wesley Richardson, Adrien Robinson, Monte Taylor, Rob Trigg and D.J. Woods took part in the workout. Isaiah Pead and Derek Wolfe were on hand for measurements and took part in position drills.

Evan Davis (ankle), Alex Hoffman (Achilles), John Hughes (hamstring), J.K. Schaffer (hamstring) and Orion Woodard (leg) either were limited or did not participate due to injury.

Robinson created the most buzz on the day, starting with his 39.5 inch vertical jump and his leap of 11-3 in the broad jump. He followed that up with 40-yard dash times of 4.51 and 4.58 unofficially, not bad for someone who measured in at 6-4 and 264 pounds. The tight end from Indianapolis, Ind. clocked 4.37 in the 20-yard shuttle, 11.59 in the 60-yard shuttle and 7.11 in the 3-cone drill.

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

Running back Isaiah Pead and defensive tackle Derek Wolfe participated in position drills. Wolfe, in particular, looked good in drills. He was fluid moving around the field and looked powerful during bag drills.

The team's other senior, defensive tackle John Hughes, took part in the bench press. Hughes completed 29 reps, one more than his total from Indianapolis. Hughes has been struggling with hamstring tightness and will run for scouts on March 24, as will linebacker J.K. Schaffer, the team's leading tackler who sat on the sidelines most of today with an injury.

Receiver D.J. Woods turned some heads with an exceptional showing. The 6-foot, 180-pound pass-catcher posted a 37-inch vertical jump, then ran a pair of 40s in the low 4.4-second range (4.42 fastest). During drills Woods ran crisp, detailed routes and caught the ball well. Coaches on hand asked the swift wideout to run nearly a dozen NFL routes and came away impressed with his ability.

Quarterback Zach Collaros also turned some heads. The smallish passer (Collaros struggles to measure 6-feet even) displayed solid arm strength and accurately placed his deep throws into pass-catchers' hands.

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Unheralded TE gets chance to shine at Cincy’s pro day «

There were three Cincinnati Bearcats at the recent NFL Scouting Combine, but when the school hosted its pro day on Friday an unheralded tight end with little playing experience might have raised the most eyebrows.

Adrien Robinson (6-4, 264 pounds) was not invited to the combine, so the tight end had to prove his NFL worth at Cincinnati’s pro day. Robinson — a first-year starter in 2011 — worked out impressively in the position drills. In workouts, Robinson clocked 4.56 and 4.55 40-yard dash times. In the jumps, Robinson excelled, going for 39.5 inches in the vertical jump and an 11-foot, 3-inch broad jump (each would have been tops among tight ends at the combine). Robinson ran 4.40 in the short shuttle and a 7.01-second cone drill, and did 15 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

For Derek Wolfe fans, the link below also includes a short video of him in some drills at his Pro Day.

Wolfe and Schaffer among Bearcats interviewed at Pro Day - Cincinnati Bearcats

I'm sure this has been rehashed in other areas, but my impression was Isaiah Pead was the "darling" of the group with 4.47 combine 40 and his impressive Senior Bowl. Bengals running back coach Jim Anderson spent a lot of time with the Pead family.

Zach Collaros also looked good to me throwing the ball. He threw some precision deep balls and benefited by having former teammates Armon Binns and Vidal Hazelton back to help catch them.

Again, Zach will be knocked for his height, but he's roughly the size of Drew Brees who's had a relatively good run around the six-foot mark.

Derek Wolfe also did his share of interviews after measuring out with the biggest hands there (10 3/4) and pounding out 33 reps on the bench press.

Also turning some heads was tight end Adrien Robinson who ran a 4.51 40. That time would've been third best at the NFL Combine.

Finally, despite a hamstring issue that kept him from running, linebacker JK Schaffer cranked out 26 reps on the bench press and probably as many interviews as he worked the crowd like he was running for office this November.

For what it's worth, I think JK is a sleeper. Whatever camp gets him will get a relentless, blue-collar worker who seemingly is in on every play. From covering NFL drafts and college football for 25-plus years I can tell you what is often ignored is, "Can they play football?"

Joe adams only benched 225 seven times...not great

I also posted this in the Bequette v. Coples thread: Arkansas' pro day is tomorrow.

actually it was today...results are on arkansasrazorbacks.com...i cant link yet though

It says greg childs ran a 4.41 with a 40.5 vertical

Also ryan mallett is throwing to the WRs

Greg Childs did well:

RT @ZekeSandhu: @TheGregChilds85 runs 4.41 at Arkansas ProDay, 40.5 inch vertical, 6.73 cone and 4.18 shuttle

Childs is an interesting prospect.

Was the best WR b/t him Adams and Wright last year. Was having a monster year but got injured and missed the last 5 games. Probably would have declared and left it he stayed healthy.

This year was cleared to play but by his coach's admission wasn't back to 100% at beginning of season. Missed 1 game due to a grandma's death and then another 2 due to soreness in his knee. Never really got on track this year.

Now he shows elite athletic ability. Would be a classic high risk high reward late round pick.

An update from one of yesterday's (Monday March 5th) Pro Days: UAB

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

• Matt McCants, graded as a potential middle round choice, improved on a few of his combine marks today. His fastest forty clocked in the upper 5.3-second area and later in the workout McCants looked athletic in position drills.

• Unheralded Terence Edge turned a few heads today. The offensive guard, who tips the scales in excess of 330-pounds, completed 27-reps on the bench, ran 5.2's in the forty and touched 31-inches in the vertical jump. Edge is unlikely to be drafted, but rather will be quickly swiped up after the seven rounds by a team wanting an athletic, wide bodied guard.

Pro Day Results: UGA, UAB, Indiana, and Hawaii | Buffalo Bills Draft

OT Matt McCants

40 Yard Dash: 5.45
Short Shuttle: 4.76

McCants did a few drills per the UAB website despite reports that he did not. He also did full positional work and continued to build on a strong combine. Right now we see McCants as a solid LT prospect who is a Day 2 pick. He probably will find himself going in Round 3 but don’t be shocked if he sneaks into Round 2.

OG Terence Edge

Bench Press: 27 reps
40 Yard Dash: 5.2
Vertical Jump: 31”

Edge is a versatile prospect who has spent time at both RT and RG during his collegiate career. He has decent athletic ability but was always a little light in the behind for our tastes. His numbers are decent but nothing that stands out too much. He’ll likely be looking for a FA deal after the draft.

OL Greg Calhoun

Bench Press: 30 Reps
Vertical Jump: 34”
Broad Jump: 9’9”
Short Shuttle: 4.26

Calhoun like Edge is another versatile OL who has seen time at OG and OT during his college career. He is the most athletic prospect of the two and showed off nice numbers today. Calhoun has a shot to get drafted late as a RT prospect but will likely end up looking for a FA deal as well.

UAB's McCants stands on Combine workout - CBSSports.com

Thirteen former Blazer players joined prospects from other area schools at UAB's pro day Monday.

Offensive tackle Matt McCants, the only participant on hand who was invited to the Scouting Combine last month, stood on his Indianapolis numbers and did not go through the agility testing. He is the No. 8-rated offensive tackle prospect by NFLDraftScout.com and the 84th-rated prospect overall, projected to go in the third round.

Other former UAB players who attended the pro day included tight end Jeffery Anderson, cornerback T.J. Ballou, running back Justin Brooks, offensive lineman Greg Calhoun, offensive lineman Terence Edge, wide receiver Frantrell Forrest, defensive tackle Elliott Henigan, defensive lineman D.J. Reese, running back Pat Shed, offensive lineman Darion Smith, cornerback Terrell Springs and tight end Danny Volk.

Calhoun lifted the 225-pound bench press 30 times, while Springs posted a 34-inch vertical jump, a 4.26-second 20-yard shuttle and a 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump, according to the school's website.

Henigan, the 38th-rated defensive tackle and No. 520 overall prospect, is the only other Blazer rated among the top 750 by NFLDraftScout.com for the 2012 draft.

An update from one of yesterday's (Monday March 5th) Pro Days: University of Georgia

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

• Scouts are in Athens, Georgia this morning as the Bulldogs take the field for their workout. Tight end Orson Charles and defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson did not work out at the combine, but are expected to fully participate in today's event. Charles made a last-minute decision to enter the draft and opted not to run in Indianapolis, as he wanted the extra week to prepare for his workout. Tyson was recently cleared by doctors to participate in the full slate of physical tests.

• Tough conditions confronted the participants of Georgia's pro day, as players faced a cold, stiff wind for most of the workout. Early results has tight end Orson Charles running unofficial times in the low-to-mid 4.7-second range. Defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson completed 30 reps on the bench, then ran a pair of 40 times that averaged under 5.0 seconds.

• The workout is complete at Georgia and by all accounts Cordy Glenn once again impressed coaches on hand. There's a feeling in the scouting community Glenn is headed into the top half of round one, possibly to the Dallas Cowboys.

• Justin Anderson was another offensive lineman that stood out. The big tackle rested on his combine numbers but looked terrific in position drills. The 330-pound blocker easily moved around the field and displayed terrific power in bad drills. Anderson has positioned himself as a late round sleeper.

• Expanding on the workout of Orson Charles, the athletic tight end looked good in position drills despite very difficult conditions. He caught the ball well and battled high winds which made throwing the football impossible at times.

• Cornerback Brandon Boykin has been medically cleared to workout from the leg injury he sustained at the Senior Bowl but chose only to participate in the bench press. Boykin is expected to schedule a personal pro-day prior to the draft in order to have some additional training time.

Pro Day Results: UGA, UAB, Indiana, and Hawaii | Buffalo Bills Draft

CB Brandon Boykin

Weight: 181 lbs.
Bench Press: 16 Reps

Boykin was quoted as saying that he is about 85% right now and will run on April 6th in Athens. Expect him to do all the drills at that time.

TE Aaron White

Weight: 238 lbs.
Bench Press: 22 Reps
40 Yard: 4.75
3 Cone: 7.13

Aaron White was a TE who got lost in shuffle once Orson Charles came to town, but he was a reliable backup with solid hands and decent blocking skills. We hoped to see him a little heavier with some added muscle but it doesn’t sound like that happened. White is likely looking at trying to make a NFL roster as a free agent signee.

DL DeAngelo Tyson

Weight: 308 lbs.
Bench Press: 30 Reps
40 Yard: 4.84
Short Shuttle: 4.6

Tyson has been a player who has flown under the radar all season long. We see him as a player with a solid draftable grade who has the versatility to play in either the 43 or 34 scheme. He does a very good job at the POA and has shown the ability to get off blocks and make plays. Could be a very valuable pickup late on Day 3 in Round 6 or 7.

TE Orson Charles

40 Yard: 4.75
Vertical Jump: 30.5”
Broad Jump: 9’5”
Short Shuttle: 4.29

People are going to make a big deal out of him not running in Indy and then having to deal with horrid conditions in Athens. Don’t buy into that, Charles is still every bit the athlete was saw him be during his time at UGA. Charles choose not to run in Indy and maybe that was a mistake not but by all reports he looked smooth in drills and showed no issues with his athleticism.

FB Bruce Figgins

Weight: 272 lbs.
40 Yard Dash: 5.13
Bench Press: 23 Reps
Short Shuttle: 4.3
3 Cone Drill: 7.3

Figgins is a guy we like a lot as a FB prospect who could become a Larry Centers type. He has soft natural hands that allow him to catch the ball easily and he has really put on some size and embraced the FB role. We like what we see from his shuttle time and his bench press numbers were encouraging for a still continuing transformation. Right now Figgins is a fringe prospect to get drafted but should have zero issue getting signed a PFA.

PK Blair Walsh

16 of 17 on FG Attempts
Long of 60 yards

Walsh was accurate and showed off plenty of leg strength in poor conditions. Because of the conditions he may have been the most impressive prospect in Athens today.

Notes:

-Former WVU QB Jarrett Brown was tossing the passes today, he’s currently a FA and is looking to latch on with another team. No reports on how he looked overall.

-30 of 32 NFL Teams were in attendance which included our very own Buffalo Bills

-Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn stood on all their combine times and performed only position drills

Charles 4.7-4-88 in 40 at windy UGA pro day - CBSSports.com

Georgia tight end Orson Charles ran two pedestrian 40 times at his Pro Day in Athens on Monday, but the 4.7-to-4.88 clockings in his shimmery gold track shoes won't be evaluated as "official times" because of wind gusts between 20-30 mph. Teams often adjust their individual 40 recordings based on the surface, environment (indoor/outdoor) and general weather conditions.

Charles, NFLDraftScout.com's third-ranked tight end, plays fast with good quickness off the snap and top-end speed for the position. His height and shorter arms are considered his greatest detriment, but his ceiling might be greater than top-ranked tight end Dwayne Allen (4.89 40 at the Combine) and Coby Fleener of Stanford, who didn't run in Indianapolis because of a high ankle sprain.

Charles' strength won't be a question either -- he pumped up 35 reps of 225 at the Scouting Combine.

Cornerback Brandon Boykin did 16 bench-press reps on Monday but won't run until his personal pro day on April 9. Boykin has return skills and plays bigger than his 5-9, 182-pound frame. Scouts trust his speed won't be an issue, but he's coming off an injury at the Senior Bowl.

For those looking for a flaw, Charles' blocking has been questioned, but pound for pound, there aren't many tougher than Charles in-line and he has the agility to be used in a movement-type role.

What might be questioned is the sagacity of players opting to skip running the 40 in the controlled environment and noted fast track of Lucas Oil Stadium. Charles passed on the workout with his position group nine days ago in Indianapolis. Running on that literal level-playing field would take the guesswork and projections out of Charles' true straight-line speed in the minds of scouts.

However, teams will conduct private workouts often with players and Charles will get that opportunity as a potential first-round pick and top-50 player.

Charles' first such workout is scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles, he said Monday.

Every NFL team was represented at the workout except for Dallas and Chicago, according to Georgia's sports information staff.

An update from one of yesterday's (Monday March 5th) Pro Days: Hawaii

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

• The Hawaii workout ended a very busy pro-day schedule on Monday though no player stood out. The winner of the day was Cal-Poly cornerback Asa Jackson who improved his combine marks in the 40, turning in a time of 4.46 seconds, and the vertical jump, where he touched 37.5 inches.

• Defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga stood on his combine numbers while Hawaii's other front line defender, Kaniela Tuipulotu, hurt a hamstring on his first forty attempt and did not continue with the workout. Of note was Corey Paredes, one of the teams best linebackers, running through a battery of fullback drills for scouts.

Pro Day Results: UGA, UAB, Indiana, and Hawaii | Buffalo Bills Draft

LB Corey Paredes

40 Yard Dash: 4.55

Paredes is an undersized OLB prospect who was known for flying to the ball in the WAC. He’s a bit of a violent hitter so it should be no surprise to hear that teams also ran him through drills as a FB at the pro day. We’re sure Paredes will get drafted but Hawaii has a history of putting guys into the NFL.

WR Royce Pollard

40 Yard Dash: 4.57

This was not the kind of time Pollard needed if he was going to be next guy in the long line of Hawaii WR’s to head into the NFL. In a very crowded and deep WR class, Pollard needed to stand out just to have a shot at getting selected and this won’t do that.

CB Asa Jackson-Cal Poly

40 Yard Dash: 4.46
Vertical Jump: 37.5”

Asa Jackson took full advantage of Hawaii moving their Pro Day to California as he got a shot to be in front of NFL scouts and improved on his combine numbers in the 40 and vertical jump. Jackson is a guy who many have overlooked with the rise of players like Norman, Steed, and Pellerin but that would be a mistake. Jackson reminds us a lot of Justin Rogers from last year.

CB Jackson, DT Meatoga impress at Hawaii Pro Day - CBSSports.com

More than a dozen former Warriors participated in Hawaii's Pro Day workout watched by personnel from 26 NFL teams in Carson, Calif. on Monday. The school moved its annual workout to California in recent years to make it easier for more scouts to attend.

Ironically enough, arguably the the top-rated prospect at the event wasn't even a member of the Hawaii football team.

Cal-Poly cornerback Asa Jackson was allowed to participate and rewarded scouts with his performance. Jackson, who fully participated in the Scouting Combine, shaved five hundredths of a second off of his 40-yard dash (4.44) from the time he posted in Indianapolis (4.49) and added three inches to his vertical jump (34.5"-37.5"). Jackson is currently rated as the No. 25 cornerback in the 2012 draft by NFLDraftScout.com. He is amongst a strong group of so-called second and third tier prospects that make up arguably the deepest position in the draft.

Of Hawaii's players, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga was not surprisingly the most impressive prospect. The 6-1, 299-pounder is the 22nd-rated defensive tackle in the 2012 class. He was invited to the Scouting Combine, and stood by those numbers, largely sitting out Monday's agility drills. He did participate in the vertical jump (31") and broad jump (9'2") Monday. He lifted the 225-pound bench press 27 times in Indianapolis, ran a 5.00-second 40-yard dash and was fifth among all defensive linemen with a 4.21-second short shuttle.

According to a source close to Meatoga, two NFL defensive line coaches (Kansas City, Cincinnati) came to the workout to specifically see Meatoga. Meatoga dined Sunday evening with the Kansas City coach.

Another fringe draftable prospect is outside linebacker Corey Paredes, who ran an impressive 4.55-second 40, according to the school's website.

Wide receiver Royce Pollard ran a 4.57 in the 40, while offensive lineman Brett Leonard lifted the 225-pound bench press 25 times.

Hawaii had three players drafted last year and has had at least one in 10 of the past 12 years.

An update from one of yesterday's (Monday March 5th) Pro Days: Indiana

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

• Two players performed well at the Indiana pro-day starting with offensive lineman Andrew McDonald. The versatile blocker measured almost 6-feet-6 and tipped the scale at 317 pounds. His 40 time clocked under 5.2 seconds. His vertical jump was 28.5 inches and McDonald looked good in position drills. He's getting consideration at both guard and tackle from teams.

• Linebacker Jeff Thomas completed 20 reps on the bench and ran 4.75-seconds in the 40. Thomas, who measured 5-feet, 11.5-inches and 231-pounds is an intense competitor scout project as a back-up for several linebacker positions and a special teams ace.

• The news was not so good for Damarlo Belcher. The one-time highly rated receiver who was dismissed from the Indiana program during the middle part of last season performed poorly during the entire pro-day workout.

Pro Day Results: UGA, UAB, Indiana, and Hawaii | Buffalo Bills Draft

LB Jeff Thomas

Height: 5115
Weight: 231 lbs.
Bench Press: 20 Reps
40 Yard Dash: 4.75

Thomas is a feisty LB who likes to fight through blocks to make plays. He doesn’t let his size deter him in the least bit and can be seen constantly running from sideline to sideline. His instincts are only just above average but his heart and determination help him a lot. He has ST ace written all over him.

OL Andrew McDonald

Height: 6060
Weight: 317 lbs.
40 Yard Dash: 5.2
Vertical Jump: 28.5”

McDonald is a big long OT who doesn’t move extremely well but is very strong. We see him as a RT only in the NFL to try and protect him from speed rushers. He doesn’t finish as many blocks as we’d like and he tends to bend at the waist but those are correctable flaws. He may be worth a late round flyer based on his size.

Note: Former WR Demarlo Belcher revealed during his Pro Day that it was drugs that got him kicked off Indiana’s team mid-season.

I couldn't find anything on the results of Monday's two other Pro Days, McNeese State and Azusa Pacific, but I did find this pre-Pro Day report.

Pro Day Primer: UGA, UAB, Hawaii, Indiana, McNeese State, & Asuza Pacific | Buffalo Bills Draft

McNeese State

DB Janzen Jackson
SAF Darrell Jenkins

Lastly we head down to the FCS level where former UT standout Janzen Jackson is still struggling to get career back on track. Jackson struggled to find consistent playing time on a very good McNeese State defense. He will hopefully look to run again at the Pro Day as he has been said to run in the 4.4’s before. Jenkins is an under the radar in the box SAF who will only benefit from the extra scouts Janzen Jackson will bring to the Pro Day.

Asuza Pacific

QB John van den Raadt

Some of you may be looking at this post and asking who this guy is and we didn’t just list him because he has a four part name. Instead we listed him because he has a Pro Day and he calls himself the Tim Tebow of the NAIA. Van den Raadt has thrown for over 6,500 yards and run for 2,600 in his career at Asuza Pacific and will look to impress scouts on Monday with his skill set. Many of us don’t get to see NAIA football but there have been more than a couple of players to come out of that level.

Yeah i almost wish we could have redshirted him. We had a player a few years ago named marcus monk who had a similar injury and he was never the same...was cut by the bears after preseason.

A lot of people had childs as the #2 WR in the SEC behind alshon jeffrey after his junior year...he's a very talented player

An update from one of yesterday's (Tuesday March 6th) Pro Days: Arkansas:

2012 Football Pro Day - University of Arkansas Athletics has a chart of all the measurables and performances of their sixteen prospects.

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Childs impresses at Arkansas pro day «

Wide receiver Gregory Childs was easily the star of the Arkansas’ pro day on Tuesday.

Childs, who weighed in at 212 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.40 and 4.39 seconds and impressed NFL observers with his skills during an outstanding position workout. He also had a 40 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-7 broad jump.

Childs likely moved from a fifth-round draft pick to a possible third-round pick.

In all, 19 prospects worked out for representatives of all 32 NFL teams, running indoors on a fast rubber track.

A few other notables:

Jake Bequette, DE (270 pounds) — Did position workouts only because of a pectoral problem.

Joe Adams, WR (188) — Ran 4.46 and 4.47 in the 40 and had a 38-inch vertical. Went through position workouts.

Jerry Franklin, LB (6-1, 242) – Franklin did a full workout after not attending the combine. Ran 4.70 and 4.68 in the 40. Had a 37 1/2-inch vertical, 10-3 broad jump, 6.98-second 3-cone drill and did 15 reps in the bench press.

One interesting note: Arkansas alum and Patriots 2011 third-round draft pick Ryan Mallett threw to the receivers during the workouts, and looked very good doing so.

Greg Childs lights up track at Arkansas Pro Day - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

"He looked like he was back," a high-ranking official from an NFC team told me. "Honestly, he looked better than he did before. I wouldn't have estimated him as a 4.40 guy based off of tape so this was great workout for him. There was a bit of a buzz about [Childs' workout] as we left."

Childs had looked like a future high round pick early in his career at Arkansas. He led the Razorbacks in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns as a sophomore and junior and appeared destined for All-SEC honors in 2010 before suffering the injury. Though he reportedly didn't actually tear the patella, Childs did undergo surgery. Many expected that he'd miss the 2011 season but Childs returned in the spring and surprised the Arkansas staff and media when he elected to practice without so much as a knee brace. Unfortunately, while his heart was willing, Childs looked like a shadow of himself as a senior. He caught just 21 passes for 240 yards in 2011 and did not score a touchdown.

Childs also helped himself during positional drills. He caught passes cleanly from his former teammate (and current New England Patriot) Ryan Mallett, as did his receiver mates Joe Adams and Jarius Wright. After running well at the Combine (4.42), Wright elected not to run again Tuesday. Adams did run again, but was unable to improve upon the surprisingly disappointing 4.55 time he registered in Indianapolis, clocking in at exactly the same time Tuesday. The scout noted that Adams weighed in at 188 pounds Tuesday, which is nine pounds heavier than he weighed at the Combine.

All three Arkansas receivers are currently viewed as likely Day Three picks by NFLDraftScout.com.

While Arkansas' trio of receivers garnered most of the attention Tuesday, pass rusher Jake Bequette also made news. Bequette informed scouts that he'd injured his pectoral muscle at the Combine and elected not to participate in measureable drills Tuesday. The 6-5, 274 pound defensive end did participate in linebacker drills, however, at the request of scouts from 3-4 teams. Bequette posted solid numbers in drills at the Combine but wasn't able to perform in the bench press drill there, either. He told scouts that he'll be scheduling a workout in which he'll do the bench press prior to the draft.

Finally, two SEC standouts I was surprised wasn't invited to the Combine showed that perhaps they should have been with strong workouts, Tuesday. Safety Tramain Thomas measured in a shade under 6-0 (5-11 7/8) and 200 pounds. He was clocked at 4.51 seconds in the 40-yard dash and posted a 38.5" vertical jump. Inside linebacker Jerry Franklin (6-1, 242 pounds) Franklin was not invited to the Combine but was clocked at 4.60 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a 6.90 second time in the three-cone drill and a 37.5" vertical jump.

Auburn pro day: Tigers try to impress, surprise NFL scouts | The Montgomery Advertiser | montgomeryadvertiser.com

Defensive back Neiko Thorpe needed just 4.4 seconds to complete the 40-yard dash and displayed a vertical jump of 38 inches, which added legitimacy to his plan to become a do-everything defensive back.

His career began at cornerback, ended at safety and included time at nickel back. Though his on-the-field performance at Auburn was a mixture of highs and lows, Thorpe has shown NFL teams that he's one of the better athletes available in the 2012 draft class.

"My expectations were to kill it -- be flawless -- which is really hard, but I was training hard," Thorpe said. "I don't regret anything I did today. I felt like I did well. I took advantage of the opportunity."

Brandon Mosley also has a chance to be drafted in April.

The senior tackle officially was measured at 6-foot-5 and participated in some positional drills Tuesday. A participant at the NFL Combine last month, Mosley elected to let stand his 40 time and other measureables gathered in Indianapolis.

Auburn's Pro Day lacks sizzle minus stars - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

With no Cam Newton, no Nick Fairley and just three prospects among NFLDraftScout.com's top 500 rated players for the 2012 draft, Auburn's Pro Day lacked anything close to the sizzle it provided in 2011.

Nine Tigers and North Alabama running back Wes Holland worked out in front of NFL Scouts.

Brandon Mosley, NFLDraftScout.com's No. 9-rated offensive tackle, was primarily a spectator while choosing to stand on his results from the Scouting Combine. He posted a 5.21-second 40-yard dash, benched 225 pounds 30 times, had a 27-inch vertical, a 103-inch broad jump, a 7.43-second three-cone drill and a 4.78-second short shuttle in Indianapolis.

Long snapper Josh Harris stands a decent chance to get drafted, but managed only 16 bench reps at 225 pounds, although he did post an 11-foot, 5-inch broad jump, according to AL.com.

Free safety Neiko Thorpe enjoyed a strong workout, highlighted by an 11-5 broad jump and a 38-inch vertical. That type of athleticism could help him sneak into the late rounds or at least become a priority free agent.

Other former Tigers who took part in the workout included quarterback Barrett Trotter, linebacker Eltoro Freeman (28 bench reps, 11-5 broad jump) and running back Eric Smith, who was dismissed from the team before last season but was allowed to come back for the school's Pro Day.

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Auburn pro day devoid of usual early-round talent «

Auburn’s pro day on Tuesday had a drastically different feel from a year ago, when eventual top overall draft pick Cam Newton drew multiple representatives from all 32 teams.

This year, 10 prospects worked out indoors on field turf for representatives from 12 teams. None of the players who worked out are projected as early-round picks.

Joshua Harris, LS (6-foot-0 7/8, 249 pounds) – Was at the combine. He ran 4.81 and 4.83 seconds in the 40-yard dash, had a 31-inch vertical, 9-foot-11 broad jump, 4.24-second short shuttle and 7.19 three-cone drill.

Neiko Thorpe, DB ( 6-1 1/4, 198) – Ran 4.42 and 4.44 in the 40, had a 38-inch vertical, 11-5 broad jump, 4.28 short shuttle and 7.19 three-cone drill. Did four reps on the bench press at 225 pounds. The NFL is always looking for safeties, and he fits the mold in terms of his athleticism. He’ll likely be a late-round pick.

Brandon Mosley, OT — He only did position drills, administered by scouts, as there were no offensive line coaches involved. Mosley has lots of upside and his athleticism showed during drills, but he needs to get stronger. Could go in the middle rounds.

An update from one of yesterday's (Tuesday March 6th) Pro Days: Alabama. The Bears and the Rams were the only two teams not in Tuscaloosa, while the GMs from the Bills, Titans and Steelers all showed up.

Observations from Alabama's 2012 Pro Day (Part I) | al.com

Of the nine Alabama players who were invited to the recent NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, six performed today. Besides the absences of Richardson and Barron, Courtney Upshaw was missing. The outside linebacker has been battling tendinitis in a knee and skipped the workout

Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, linebacker Dont'a Hightower and wide receiver Marquis Maze worked out at the combine but did not run the 40-yard dash today.

Cornerback DeQuan Menzie improved on the 4.74-second time in which he ran the 40-yard dash at Indianapolis, turning in a time of 4.66 seconds. He is considered a potential second-round draft pick and could be projected as a free safety as well as a cornerback.

Wide receiver Darius Hanks ran the 40-yard day in 4.69 seconds today, barely slower than the 4.66 he ran in Indianapolis.

Nose guard Josh Chapman continues to recover from mid-January knee surgery, but he decided to participate today in the bench press. Lifting for the first time in more than two months, he lifted the 225 pounds 29 times.

Hightower was measured at 6-feet tall. When speaking to reporters, he insisted that he is 6-3.

Center William Vlachos was among a group of eight players who were invited to the combine who worked out today. He said he was disappointed that he wasn't invited to Indianapolis but thought the nature of those workouts was suited more toward defensive backs than offensive linemen. He believes he performed well in games against some of the top defensive tackle prospects in the draft.

Vlachos said he has gained some weight to enhance his draft prospects and is up to 319 pounds. Vlachos, who ran the 40-yard dash in 5.27 seconds, said he will lift on March 29.

Others who participated, and their 40-yard dash times, were outside linebackers Jerrell Harris (4.81) and Alex Watkins (4.78), cornerback Phelon Jones (4.65), tight end Brad Smelley (4.78), offensive linemen Alfred McCullough (4.82) and John Michael Boswell (5.35) and nose guard Nick Gentry (5.66).

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Kirkpatrick wows during Alabama’s pro day «

Kirkpatrick (6-1 3/4, 194) stood on everything from combine. He had a very, very, very good workout. He’s already a first-round pick, I think what he did was make people realize that their evaluation was correct. I look at him as first half of the first round.

Other players who stood out Wednesday:

Joshua Chapman, DT (6-foot-9 5/8, 319 pounds) — Only got measured Wednesday because of a knee injury. He will work out March 29.

Darius Hanks, WR (5-11 3/4, 188) — Ran 4.67 and 4.66 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He had a 4.37-second short shuttle, 6.87 three-cone drill. He caught the ball well and had very good quickness in his workouts. He’s probably a third-day selection.

Dont’a Hightower, LB (6-2 1/8, 265) — Stood on his combine numbers, except he posted a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He also had a 4.68 short shuttle and a 7.55 cone drill. He worked really well. He’s one of those guys who helped himself. I view him as a high second-round pick.

Marquis Maze, WR — He stood on everything that he did at the combine. He had an individual workout that just looked OK. He’s just a guy that’s good at things but not great at anything.

De’Quan Menzie, DB (5-10 3/4, 202) — He ran 4.62- and 4.61-second 40s. He had a 6.93 cone drill (very good), and he looked good in the workout. Menzie has very good ball skills. He’s going to be a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

Brad Smelley, TE (6-2, 237) — He’s a guy we need to add. Ran 4.77- and 4.76-second 40s; also had a 9-4 broad jump, 4.49 short shuttle, 7.15 cone drill and had 13 strength lifts. He didn’t do the vertical jump. He’ll be drafted by a team that runs a west-coast offense.

Safety Mark Barron still is injured and will work out March 29, when Richardson and Upshaw are also expected to work out.

Alabama is a school the scouts love to go to for the pro day. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban talks to everybody there, asks if there’s any questions and makes them feel important and at home. After ‘Bama was done Wednesday, the schools had a huge barbecue dinner from Blue Ribbon BBQ — everybody likes a free lunch. When scouts leave Alabama they’re all pleased because they are treated so well.

30 teams represented at limited Alabama Pro Day - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

One or two players projected as first-round draft choices were among the players who performed Wednesday. Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, ranked 15th overall by NFLDraftScout.com, and inside linebacker Dont'a Hightower (28th) were among six Alabama players who had been to the combine but wanted to show off their skills again.

One player whose stock might have fallen at the combine might have improved his status slightly Wednesday.

Cornerback DeQuan Menzie ran the 40-yard dash in 4.74 seconds at Indianapolis. He improved that time to 4.66 seconds Wednesday.

"At the combine, I wasn't relaxed," Menzie said. "I was feeling so much pressure. Here, it was like I was at home, and I could release the pressure and run my best 40."

Menzie came out of the combine rated the 20th best cornerback available in the draft and was projected as a fourth- or fifth-round pick. Some teams might consider him as a free safety.

"I play it all," Menzie said. "I played safety in the Senior Bowl. I played safety in high school. I played corner here. I played in the nickel spot. There's really nothing that I can't handle. Saban put me through that."

Menzie has been training with Kirkpatrick and Hightower. What have they been telling Menzie?

"We've just got to get that money," Menzie said. "That's what Dont'a and Kirk say all the time. 'Go get that money. You've got to have the money on your mind.'"

Alabama center William Vlachos admitted he was disappointed.

"If you look at the top-five consensus defensive tackles in the draft, I blocked all of them and blocked them well," Vlachos said. In particular, he was referring to Penn State's Devon Still, Michigan State's Jerel Worthy and Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox and Michael Brockers of LSU.

"I can play with all of those guys," Vlachos said. "I think I proved that on film for three years. If these guys are top 15 picks, yes, I think I should have been invited to the Combine."

As a three-year starter, Vlachos said he played most of his college career at 295 pounds. Sensitive to being called small, the 6-foot-1 lineman has worked at gaining weight. He weighed in Wednesday at 319 pounds.

"I put on some weight, and I was able to run very well carrying it," said Vlachos, who ran the 40 in 5.27 seconds. "My arm length and height are not ideal. I also don't want to be light. Being able to run at that weight has got to be a positive for me."

Hightower has been listed at 6-4 throughout his college career. He has been listed as 6-2 by the NFL, but he was measured at 6-0 on Wednesday. Who measured him?"I don't know," Hightower said. "I know I'm 6-3. I'm telling all of y'all: I'm 6-3. I don't know what they're talking about."

He noted that former Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain was measured at 6-2 two years ago.

"They're going to measure me at 6-foot?" Hightower said. "I'm not even taking that. I'm 6-3. For everybody, I'm 6-3."

An update from one of yesterday's (Tuesday March 6th) Pro Days: Illinois:

2012 NFL draft pro day updates - Tony Pauline - SI.com

The Illinois pro day is complete and, while most of the top name prospects stood on their combine numbers, there were some standout performances.

Fast-rising Whitney Mercilus posted a time of 7.03 in the three-cone, which bettered his mark from the combine by almost .15 seconds. The number would've also placed Mercilus, who lined up at defensive end last season, in the top half of the linebackers who participated in the three-cone test at the combine. His short shuttle run of 4.49 seconds was also an improvement from his combine number last week. Afterward, Mercilus ran through position drills at both defensive line and linebacker. The game-impacting junior has likely secured a spot for himself in the bottom half of the first round.

Receiver AJ Jenkins also blistered in the three-cone and short shuttle, posting times in the low 3.8 second area and 6.7 second area respectively. His short shuttle time was faster than any run by a receiver at the combine, while only two wideouts bested the three-cone mark.
Jason Ford, the Fighting Illini's second-leading rusher last season, tipped the scale near 250 pounds and posted 40 times in the low-to-mid 4.6-second range, and turned in a vertical jump of 35 inches. Both are terrific marks and Ford later stood out in pass-catching drills. The college running back is getting long looks as a west coast fullback by NFL teams.

Offensive lineman John Cornell, overlooked in scouting circles due to the quality talent around him, also fared well. He completed 32 reps on the bench press, then cracked 5.10 seconds in the 40 on a number of watches. The 40 time is important, as this tells scouts Cornell has the athleticism many did not think he possessed.

NFL.com Blogs » Gil Brandt » Mercilus solidifies first-round status at Illinois pro day «

Illinois DE Whitney Mercilus answered the most pressing questions surrounding his draft stock during Tuesday’s pro day and solidified himself as a sure-fire first-round selection.

Mercilus (6-foot-3 7/8, 258 pounds) ran a 4.38-second short shuttle and a 7.03-second three-cone drill. He looked good, and performed well in the subsequent workouts. He answered the question of whether he can be the guy who plays in a 3-4 defense because of his ability to play in space. Mercilus was solid closing in on pass receivers in space. Combine his coverage ability and his knack for rushing the passer (14 sacks last season) and he should be a first-day draft pick.

In addition to Mercilus, 18 other players worked out in front of all 32 teams. The pro day was held indoors and conducted on field turf.

Here’s who else made an impression:

Jeff Allen, OL (6-4 1/8, 310) — Stood on everything from the combine, except he ran a 4.78-second short shuttle and a 7.57-second three-cone drill. He looked OK, not particularly great in the drills. He’s a big tackle with long arms, which is what everyone is looking for.

A.J. Jenkins, WR (6-0 1/8, 186) — Jenkins ran a 4.06-second short shuttle and a 6.73-second three-cone drill. He looked good catching the ball and running routes. It’s so hard to predict WRs because there are so many of them, but he ran extremely well at the combine, and he caught the ball well Tuesday. Anytime you’ve got a guy over 6-feet tall, runs a sub-4.4 40-yard dash and who catches the ball well, that’s an indicator he’s a third-, fourth-round type of guy.

Tavon Wilson, DB (5-11, 205) — Wilson, who wasn’t at the combine, will probably be a third-day selection. He ran a 4.5-second and 4.55-second 40-yard dash. He then posted a 32-inch vertical jump, 10-4 broad jump, 4.16-second short shuttle, 7.04-second three-cone drill. He also bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times. Wilson looked good in the DB drills and, in all likelihood, he’s a third-day draft pick. He played cornerback in college, but he translates as a free safety in the NFL.

Mercilus a big draw at Illinois' Pro Day - CBSSports.com - Rob Rang

Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus became the first top prospect to participate in agility tests during the Pro Day season, running an impressive 4.38-second short shuttle and a 7.03-second three-cone drill, according to NFL.com.

One of 18 prospects to work out in front of representatives from all 32 NFL teams for Tuesday's indoor workout on field turf, Mercilus is trying to prove he can transition to edge rusher in a 3-4 scheme if asked. Rated as the No. 3 defensive end prospect and No. 26 overall by NFLDraftScout.com, Mercilus measured in at 6-3 7/8, 258 pounds.

Offensive tackle Jeff Allen, a rising prospect looking to crack the top three rounds, stood on his workout numbers from the Scouting Combine, although he did run a 4.78 short shuttle and 7.57 three-cone drill.

A.J. Jenkins is the 18th-rated wide receiver by NFLDraftScout.com. He ran a 4.06 short shuttle and a 6.73 three-cone drill.

Cornerback Tavon Wilson is a fringe draft prospect who ran 4.5 and 4.55-second 40-yard dashes to go along with a 32-inch vertical jump, 10"4' brad jump, 4.16 short shuttle, 7.04 three-cone drill and bench pressed 225 pounds 17 times.

But there was no doubt the scouts were on hand primarily to take in Mercilus' workout. He's one of the first-round's biggest enigmas. After two mediocre season's at Illinois, he busted out as the nation's top defensive end with 16 sacks, nine forced fumbles and a whopping 22.5 tackles for loss.

"I just have a knack for it," he said at the Combine, where he ran a 4.68 40, fourth-best among defensive linemen in attendance. "Throughout the game I was able to watch the quarterback's movements and just see him open up and then I just go in there and just knock it away."

He also benched 225 pounds 27 times, had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 118-inch broad jump, a 7.17 three-cone drill and a 4.53 in the short shuttle in Indianapolis.

Scouts gush a list of positives traits, including quickness, agility, strength, instincts, condition, attitude ... and he is just beginning to mature and could be a great outside linebacker.

AJ Jenkins is really starting to intrigue me if we're taking a 2nd WR in the draft. Would still like Marvin Jones as the main draftee at the position but if we're looking at a second guy, Jenkins is a nice alternative to Broyles or Wylie.
