Misinterpretation

NFL security literally had to wrestle the camera away from Matt Estrella. They knew what they were doing, BB knew. It doesn't make a difference anyway, so who cares.

You clearly care, since you keep trolling about it. Furthermore, when an incident like that occurs, a person's reactions are frequently unrelated to guilt or innocence. In fact, it's often the guilty who act the most innocent.

You can't seem to wrap your mind around the basics. The NFL allowed the Jets and Phins to do it. Why does security show up to bag the Patriots from it?

As I said, the memo was clear, but the NFL subverted the memo by allowing taping. So, when they showed up and demanded the tape from the Patriots, Estrella did the most natural thing. Refuse to give it up because he's an employee and that's his job.

A cop knocks on your door at night and asks to search your home without a warrant. Do you let him in? If not, then you must be a criminal. Is that your line of reasoning?

The problem with his misinterpretation is that there was a clear effort to conceal the tapes as well. It's like jay-walking when you know the cop is looking the other way.

What do you mean "conceal?"

Walsh was instructed to keep these tapes on the down-low, not really helpful to BB if he is trying to plead ignorance.

As was explained earlier in an earlier post by someone else, there were reasons to keep it on the down-low (team may not hide signals as much if they don't think they are being watched) other then they thought they were doing something wrong. Though if you want to call "down-low" carrying a big camera on the sidelines with Pats gear on (as Estrella did) in plain sight of 80,000-something fans and every coach and player, that's fine. My definition of "down-low" would constitute something a bit more inconspicuous, but to each his own.

BB may be lying, you're right, but its not completely unreasonable to think he may be teling the truth, that he applied the rule in a certain way that was consistant with one interpretation of the rule but inconsistent with the way the NFL wanted the rule read. He could have looked at the rule, looked at the memo, and decided to follow what he thought the rule was rather them follow a memo that he thought was inconsistent with the rules of the league as he understood them. Was it stretching, yes; was it unreasonable, no.

As I said earlier, he may very well be lying, but the fact no one has even tried to defend him when there is very clear evidence suggests to me a hatred of the Pats and Belichick rather then responsible journalism.

Uh, so you believe Walsh over Belichick, eh?

Not to mention the fact that the Patriots were taping out in the wide open for everyone to see.

You call that the down-low?

Provide one reason that I shouldn't believe what Walsh has to say, or just one reason that Belichick's word is any better than Walsh's. BTW Belichick hasn't refuted ANY of Walsh's story, has he?

If you bumped into a guy videotaping the game in the upper deck before the 2007 season, would you even blink an eye? It wasn't the taping that was to be kept on the down-low, it was the TAPES themselves, which is how Estrella was busted. He wasn't stopped while he was taping, he was stopped carrying tapes.

You know, the Jets need a few more fans.....seriously, fill out an application.

Because Walsh is the sort of fellow who lies on his resume about his experience. He is the sort who puts sharp blades in a woman's bed for the fun of it. Because he is the guy who sat on this story for many months and pretended he had something. Because he claims he was using porn shots of cheerleaders and shoddy camera work in an attempt to land a job as a football coach. Because he illegally and secretly taped Pioli. Because he stole memorabilia from the Patriots. Those are 6 reasons. How many more do you need?

Yes, he has. Belichick claims that this was not a covert effort to mislead the NFL, as Matt Walsh claims. He also says that the Patriots never taped the Rams' walkthrough. For many months, the Walsh people lead us to believe that they had. I can show you quotes from the Globe in which Mr. Levy says that they have the incriminating tape. In other words, Walsh and his people are of very low character, and they're liars. Walsh even claimed he never taped Pioli, and his lawyer called Pioli a liar, and then Pioli showed him the audiotapes.

Have you had enough?

Wha? What are you saying? He was taping out in the open. People saw him. He was wearing Pats garb.

10 chars. 10 chars.

That was more intelligent than your scribbling's in my quote.

And the true sign of an intellectual pipsqueak is to try to insult someone when their logic and reason fail them.

Pretty pathetic.

Ok, homer back to your Belichick shrine.

Homer with pride.

Haters though have no pride. They just hate.

With that being said, have the last word. You're obviously not a Patriot fan, so I'm not responding to your trollish crud any longer, Jetsfan.

Another problem is that Goodell repeated that he still does not believe BBs explanation of his misinterpretation. Why should we be punished because he thinks that BB wasn't following the 'spirit' of the rule? If the Patriots' actions were indeed technically allowed under a certain interpretation then they are not against the rules... right?

What this entire issue comes down to is:

1) Goodell's acceptance (or lack thereof) of BBs explanation.
2) Goodell's decision on the severity of the infraction.

If he's an idiot, this is a big problem.

I've been lurking for a while but this post was the most compelling to make me register and say that this is spot on.

Goodell is a dufus for letting this go on, his lack of an explanation of the rule violation along with punishment is allowing the media outlets to spin this for ratings in a negative way. He could have easily quell this at the start of last season and yesterday. For example, he could have clarified this during his press conference when he spoke about how it is not against league policy to scout coaches during games and stealing signals was permissible. As such, the rule violation was about usage of a third camera and where that camera was positioned. Furthermore, he could have stated that previous to the 2006 memo, that the interpretation of the rule could have been ambiguous and the memo's purpose was to clarified this, this would have neutralized all of the spins doctors and Spector's concerns that the Pats have been cheating since 2001. All conspiracy theories or innuendo of cover ups would have been squelch.

Truly an idiot way to handle the situation. For the sake of the NFL, the owners have to figure out how to vote him off the island.
