I agree. I remember posters telling me their was no way the pats would draft him. I knew better!

    Re: Merriweather

I was one of those posters. I didn't think Meriweather was even on our board. No one questioned Meriweather's ability. It was his character that was in question. In recent years, the patriots have stayed away from drafting players with perceived character issues.

I would mention that he was a first round choice. For him to be a solid backup in his second season is just what we should expect. Some expected much more.

    Re: Merriweather

Meriweather has been one of the best players on our Defense. Especially in coverage.

    He's playing really good.

    Re: Merriweather

He's one of the few non-busts in our last few drafts. And, btw it's spelt Meriweather (with one r).

    Re: Merriweather

Now all we need is another ILB, OLB, SS, CB and our defense won't look too bad.

Seriously with Bruschi, Harrison, Vrabel, Seau, Colvin, all gone or soon to be gone... we shouldve rebuilt this defense a long time ago.

    Re: Merriweather

Thats where Mayo, and hopefully Crable come into the picture, they're the first bricks of rebuilding this linebacking corps preparing for the departure of the old guard, Thomas is just a stop gap in that regard.

    Re: Merriweather

I take it you don't like Mayo, Crable, Thomas, Meriweather, Wheatley, Wilhite, Guyton and James Sanders.

We have rebuilt at LB and at DB.

    Re: Merriweather

I think Sanders could be upgraded, but if we have enough talent around him he'll be a solid enough Strong Safety.

Next thing we need is either a d-lineman or a offensive tackle, whichever has the most value when we pick next year

    Re: Merriweather

Not a criticism here, since technically that's what he is. FWIW, though, if it were up to me, I'd replace "starters"/"backups" with "play percentage," determined after the game, and awarded based on number of downs played.

I'm still trying to figure out if he's a FS or a SS, but one thing is for sure and that's he has improved since last year.

I don't know what possible 'character' issues he may have. If it means doing what you have to do to protect your life and the life of a friend in a legal and righteous manner, I'd share a foxhole with that kid anyday.

He worked on those hands this offseason, and it has paid off. I don't know what you have seen this year that tells you differently?

For instance? I'm not saying you are wrong, nothing sticks out to me this year. The one in the Chargers game was not an easy catch at all as he was getting thrown to the floor.

    Re: Merriweather

Has he played more than James Sanders who he backs up at free safety? But your point is well taken. He is as important to this year's defensive backfield success as either of the other two safeties.

    Re: Merriweather

Exactly. His ability wasn't ever a question ,or much of one, until he got here. It's been his (perceived by some) disappointing play. He backs up Rodney, and if anyone thinks Rodney's an easy act to follow just doesn't get it.

No matter how you feel about that issue, it's still a bit early:rolleyes: to start calling him the B word.

    Re: Merriweather

I presume that you talking about our top draft choice.

Which of the following are you planning to cut: Seymour, Warren, Wilfork or Green? Sure we could use a backup to replace Wright. If an OT is right on value, we will surely draft him. If there isn't one that is right on value, then we won't. This has been a decision for every year under Belichick. It hasn't happened yet.

    Re: Merriweather

Guyton's an undrafted Free agent... just because he's got a couple snaps that doesnt mean he's going to be a starter in this league

Wilhite is a nickleback at best

Crable hasnt even seen the field. Remains to be seen if he can start for us or not. I had mty doubts when we drafted him that hes more of a situational/back up type OLB.

Sanders, I dont like at all.

Meriweather should actually be starting instead of Sanders. He's playing that good. For those questioning why he isn't, I would say that the CB position seems to need A LOT more help right now than the safety position.

    Re: Merriweather

"Wilhite is a nickleback at best" way to early to say that. I thought that of Asante Samuel thought he was just a guy to fill in for law and poole

    Re: Merriweather

I wouldn't like to cut any of them - the fact remains that Wilfork is unsigned past this season (I believe - he might have one more year left) and Seymour is going to be 30 next year - I love the D-Line, but drafting a stud for the line can never hurt.

Also, you're totally ignoring my comment that I feel the O-line needs help too - I just feel like, depending on where we pick - if we can get another seymour or warren somewhere in the 1st round I certainly wouldn't complain. However, If we have equally good drafting options at either O-Line or D-Line I would opt for the offensive lineman.

    Re: Merriweather

I didn't ignore the OL. Half of the short post discussed the OT position. We have looked for an OT every year for at least a decade. We can always use one more. We always carry four. We also bring lots of OL's into camp.

And sure, Belichick more than anyone is willing to use a high pick for a stud defensive lineman.

All this is well and good. The reality is that next offseason will revolve around defensive backs. We have Meriweather, Hobbs, Wilhite and Wheatley signed with five open roster spots.
