Found this little nugget on rotoworld when discussing his contract situation. Awesome against the run, but 55th in pass blocking? Yikes!! I'm not sure what kind of methodology Pro Football Focus uses but that is a scary ranking:

Methodology may be giving PFF too much credit. . . .

So out of 64 starting tackles, 54 were better than Light at pass blocking? But,59 were worse at run blocking?

Maybe Left Guard (or Right Guard) is a good place for him.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

I saw a crazy man in his underwear and tin foil hat shouting racial slurs on the corner in Boston the other day. He told me that Matt Light was in the top ten in pass blocking. I tend to believe him more than PFF (I'm sure the aliens that speak to him actually understand football beter than the staff of PFF), the same publication that says that Tom Brady wasn't in the top 20 in the race for offensive player of the year. You know the Tom Brady who actually won the OPOY award. In fact, they also didn't have Troy Polamalu in the top 20 for DPOY either. Yes, that is the guy who won DPOY.

I am pretty sure their methodology involves an old pair Dungeon and Dragon dice, a monkey throwing darts at a wall, and enough anal lubricant needed to fit a human head into a rectum.

    Well, I hope it's darts the monkey's throwing. . . .

Weren't they the ones who said that Light allowed 10 sacks this year but Connolly allowed NONE??

I am fairly certain that Connolly allowed at least 5 this year while playing LG.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

I always shake my head when I see an otherwise well respected sports writer like Chris Price or Mike Reiss quote PFF stats. Maybe they use their data simply by default - because there is no other source for such information.

Nobody else like Elias Sports Bureau or Stats Inc. bothers to attempt to compile that kind of data most likely because they realize it would be flawed. Those big name sources for stats count things like yardage and receptions; those numbers are completely objective.

However what PFF does is not only completely subjective, the mechanism (television video rather than the coaches all-22 tape) and data collectors (amateur volunteers with no professional coaching experience) make the potential for their statistics to be flawed so high that they probably shouldn't be cited as fact by anybody for any purpose, at least not with a great big disclaimer.

I think one phenomenon that I am seeing is that because writers like Price and Reiss refer to their stats, they are assumed to be legitimate. The only thing I can think of to compare this to is when Bleacher Report first started becoming known; because they were appearing on the main page of well known sites such as CBS Sports and Fox Sports, the initial assumption was the articles there were legitimately objective, professional and factual.

As a reminder, PFF declared that David Garrard was a better quarterback than Tom Brady a year ago, and Stylz G White was a top NFL defensive lineman. PFF stats make for interesting topics of discussion, but should not be taken seriously as factual evidence of anything.

Matt Light sucks. We have a chance to cut and run here. Been waiting for this for years and years. If we bring him back it better be a damn friendly cap hit and with no guarantee of starting.

What are you insane? We should package Light with Brady and trade them for David Garrard.

Its not Reiss or Price citing PFF, its ROTOWORLD, which should tell you a lot.

Hey we are all desperate for a playoff game win around here but I don't think Garrard is the answer.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

Matt Light is right up there with Bruce Armstrong in terms of best Pats LT of All-Time.

Yes, Light struggles with the speed rushers. As most LTs do. But, all in all, Light has surpassed expectations.

I think that Light will probably be brought back. Probably for a very similar contract that he'd signed previously. I know that many fans believe that Vollmer is penciled in at LT already, but only Belichick and Scarnecchia know that for sure. I fully expect an OT to be drafted. Someone who will replace LeVoir and will push Maneri.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

Actually Light 'struggling with speed rushers' is a widely held fallacy. I assume its because most REs are speed rushers and any time a single sack is allowed by our LT there are volumes of posts about how he sucks.
Check out Lights record vs Taylor, Freeney, etc and he is FAR above average vs them.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

Here's 1 more vote to PFF being a useless piece of garbage. And not just because of their ranking of Brady this year. I actually reviewed their stuff last year when it was free and the only thing of any use was the playing time stats.

Re: Matt Light: 55th rated tackle in pass blocking

PFF reviews every play, of every player, every year, on film, and compiles the statistics. Then we have random opinions from internet message board posters. I'm not taking a position here. Some prefer the former some prefer the later.
