Looks like Cleveland could be looking to unload Jabaal Sheard and Ahtyba Rubin, both are a poor fit for their new 3-4 scheme. I know Sheard was a draft binkie for many on this board.

Lombardi and Belichick are good friends and frequent trade partners. Lombardi loves Mallett and Belichick is looking for a pass rushing DE. I wonder if Mallett for Sheard could be in the cards.

For a second? Nah. For Mallet? No. For a fifth, sixth (should they be acquired), or seventh? Yea sure.

...so yea I wouldn't realistically be on board probably.

Sheard for a 2nd, sign me up. No way the Cleveland let him go.

I personally don't know enough about Sheard (who watches Browns' games unless your team is playing them?). But 15.5 sacks in his first two seasons on a really bad team isn't all that bad. He did lead the Browns in sacks in both his NFL seasons.

I think exploring a trade may be a possibility. With Jones, Kelly, and Wilfork lining up next to him on passing downs, he could get a lot of favorable match ups (I assume he got doubled a lot the last two years as the only Brown pass rush threat).

Why wouldn't they? It is universally agreed that he is a poor fit for their defense. If they can get a second now, why waste a year and then have to dump him next year for a much lower pick after a bad season.

Unless they think they can convert him to a 3-4 OLB, which by accounts they don't, why keep him when his trade value is at its highest?

At 6'2 255lbs he lacks the size to be an every down left defensive end. Basically he'd just give us a younger player that would have the same liabilities as Ninkovich.

You'd really think a 6'2 255 pound guy would be better suited to play OLB in a 34 defense. But if you're right and that's the reason we really can't bring him here because our LDE is more of a Jack so having OLB ability is very important.

I'm not a fan of Sheard. He's a better fit now with the Pats using a 4-3 (I saw him as a terrible fit for a 3-4, and apparently the Browns agree if they're getting rid of him), but he's still a limited athlete that needs to be on the left side to take on less athletic right tackles.

Also, I haven't run the numbers for this past season, but while his 8.5 sacks his rookie season were impressive, his total pressures number (29.5) was not great. For comparison, a guy like 2011 Andre Carter had 42 pressures in 14 games, which is an average under 2 per game for Sheard and exactly 3 for Carter.

(All pressure numbers from Football Outsiders, which has not yet given their 2012 totals)

Both are solid young players, but I probably wouldn't give up anything more than a 3rd for either. If I'm trading Mallet I'd want both of them back.

    No Jersey Selected

I don't understand why the Browns would consider neither Rubin nor Sheard a good fit for a 3-4 defense.

    I wanted Bill to take Rubin in the 5th round of the 2008 draft instead of UDFA-talent Matty Slater;
doing so would've mitigated the desire to take Busto Brace the following year.
I also wanted either Sheard or Brooks Reed at 33 in the 2011 draft instead of Glas-IR Dowling.

Both players I thought at the time would've been great fits on our then 3-4 defense. Now Cleveland
doesn't think that they fit on a 3-4 defense?

Ahtyba Rubin would be an interesting addition. Does anyone have details of his contract status?

Could be the Browns need a second rounder to move in a trade for a certain QB?

2 time pro bowler, 2 time all pro. If they did a redraft Slater goes ahead of where he did.

You know what I wonder is why haven't we ever attempted to develop Slater as a safety? We have a guy with great speed, good size who is great at making open field tackles you'd think he'd be less of a liability in coverage than some of the bums we've thrown back there over the last few years too.

Sheard and Rubin are both good solid players and at 26 and 24, still young. Sheard was a 2nd round pick that after two productive seasons is coming into his own. I believe they could get Atlanta's 1st for Sheard who has 2 years left at under a mill each on his contract and is better than any DE at that pick. There are also rumors of Sheard going to Tennessee. If we wanted Mallett and Bill wanted to part with him, a 3rd and 5th for an unproven former 3rd round QB should be adequate or a late 2nd if we trade down and obtain one.

This is by far the dumbest post I've ever read.

I live in Cleveland. And its laughable if you think you could get either player, or both, for a 5, 6th, or 7th.

Both players are studs. You've never watched a Browns game in your life.
