    Boston Sports Media Watch

Nice article in here comparing the roster building methods of the Patriots vs the Jets/Colts.

Illuminating in the way they compare drafts. Everybody here likes to solely focus on the Patriots draft misses, but it's interesting to see just how many the other guys have as well, adds some perspective to the randomness of the process.

Also, the article has the added benefit of outing a certain segment of the media's crowing for our organization to be more like the ones who are now being proven to be unsuccessful over a sustained stretch.

Have contended for the longest time that you need to take a longitudinal view of the draft, for every hit every time has misses..

I did this in another thread, and focused on 2nd round picks..

Have always contended that the draft is a crap shoot... people look to the Steelers as some hallmark we should emulate.. here is their draft history in the second round for the past 6 years..

2011.. Marcus Gilbert..OT currently starts for the Steelers
2010.. Jason Worilds.. playing ok, but seems to be a work in progress
    2009.. no second round pick
2008.. Limus Sweed... has been waived
    2007.. Lamar Woodley.. great pick
    2006.. no second round pick

    Miami's vaunted 2nd round picks..

2011...Daniel Thomas RB.. looks like a good pick
2010..Koa Missa. LB.. work in progress
2009..Pat White. QB... not in the game
2008..Phillip Merling.. not in the game
    Chad Henne..
2007.. John Beck. QB...traded to the Redskins
    Samson Satele.. C.. good pick
    2006..no pick

The Jets absolutely wonderful 2nd round picks..

    2011... no second round pick
    2010.. Vladimir DuCasse
    2009.. Shonn Greene
2008 .. no second round pick
    2007.. David Harris
    2006.. Kellen Clemens
    2005... Mike Nugent
    Justin Miller..

The Green Bay Packers recent 2ndround picks..

    2011.. Randall Cobb
    2010.. Mike Neal.. oft injuried
    2009.. no second round pick
2008..Brian Brohm.. no longer in the NFL
    Patrick lee.. marginal player
2007..Brandon Jackson.. marginal player now with the Browns.
2006...Darren Colledge..starting O lineman now with the Cardinals
    Greg Jennings
2005..Nick Collins.. a pro bowler on IR
Terrence Murphy retired from the NFL..

You can do this will all of the teams in the AFC and results may be comparable. People need to view this longitudinally.. there are as many hits in the draft as misses

Yesterday AM Zo was on sans Gresh and he was playing a Felger rant clip from August of this pre season where Felger was reciting the litany of TE's Bill and Tom had had here and all the picks Bill had wasted on TE in order to create this imaginary mismatches crap this offense keeps blathering about and will never actually benefit from because their whole offense is based on midget slot receivers and they should just admit it and quit kidding themselves and BSing braniacs like himself and the fans and start Welker and Edleman and be done with it.

    It was classic.

The Jets I get, but lumping the Colts in there as "unsuccessful over a sustained stretch" is inaccurate. The top 3 teams of the 2000s have been the Patriots, Colts and Steelers, and the Colts run began before either of the other team's.

    No Jersey Selected

He could just as easily have dug out that guy's previous rants about how the Colts and Jets are model franchises with a much better record of acquiring and developing better players than the Pats. It's been a permanent theme with that guy.

    "....the Colts run began before....."

Will somebody inform the Douche that Indy and Manning didn't even win a playoff game until the 2003 season.

Pittsburgh and New England were already playing in AFCCG's and winning Super Bowls.

run began....where were they running to...?

AFTER 2010 he had this rant?

Is he that stupid? Wait, don't answer that. . . .

[Then again, don't get me started on a certain poster on this board who was convinced that Welker should be traded b/c he was ill-suited for the Pats' new GRONKnandez-based offense. . . .]

Wow, this is quite telling. Dec is the time when everyone is banged up and the-next-player-up month. The difference between the steelers/patriots vs everyone else is that they try to get 60% B+ players as possible while everyone else tries to get 20% A+ players they rely on but when injured, the whole mean grade goes to C.

To be fair, if I'm thinking of the correct poster, he's usually pretty good. Was just really, really, spectacularly wrong in this one case.

The funny thing is that Jets fans always ridicule Belichick about his drafting yet looking at the Jets draft, Tannenbaum sucks even worse and is living off his reputation of the 2006 and 2007 drafts.

In 2008, they got one of the largest draft busts in NFL history in Gholston. Keller is an above average TE who is wildly inconsistent. Lowrey was ok, but traded away. The rest did nothing.

In 2009, the Jets best pick was probably Matt Slauson in the sixth round. Sanchez was a bad 5th overall pick. Greene is a decent third round pick, but nothing like expectations and a better change of pace back than anything.

In 2010, they got a nickelback in the first round (Kyle Wilson who has played great at times and horrible others this year) and a kick returner (McKnight who started incredibly this year and fell apart quickly) and not much else of value. Ducasse is another high pick who almost never sees the field.

It is too early to tell for 2011 although Wilkerson has been decent and Kerley looks good as a fifth round pick. The rest haven't seen the field. I think Kendrick Ellis is going to be an overhyped never was who looked amazing beating up on Division 2 players in college but really can't play vs. the big boys in the NFL (and depending on how his trial goes in the offseason, he may never get another chance to prove himself).

By my count, they have gotten 5 starters (Keller, Slauson, Sanchez, Greene, and Wilkerson) and solid two back ups (Wilson and Kerley) and one special teamer (McKnight) in the 2007 through 2011 drafts with most being average or below average at their roles.

During the same time frame, the Pats got 8-9 starters (Mayo, Spikes, McCourty, Gronk, Hernandez, Chung, Vollmer, Solder, Deadrick) with several being well above average to elite, with three solid role players (Edelman, Pryor, and Ridley) and one special teamer (Mesko). The Pats clearly have drafted far better than the Jets for the last four years.

And I don't even want to touch the Colts' drafting. They went 2-14 not because they were Sucking for Luck, but the Polians dismantled that team and left it devoid with talent. Take away 4-6 big names and most of their roster couldn't get jobs on most teams.

Then again don't get me started on certain posters on this board who aren't content in just having been proven right in a debate but consistently bring up how wrong the other poster was because they have to get in their 'I TOLD YOU SO'.
