Oh no, there's something wrong with his right hand too? ;)

FWIW Chris Price had an interview with his ortho doc connection on WEEI yesterday. The grapevine among the ortho docs (as opposed to this team) is where potential info flows.

He said the word is he fractured his ulna (outside long bone as opposed to radius which is long inside bone). Procedure would have put a short but somewhat thick plate affixed with screws over the injury. Said 4-6 is what it generally takes for bone to knit. Said it's a harder spot than usual to achieve healing because of lesser blood flow in the area. (Although I know from experience they have electrical stimulators that can be worn these days to increase blood flow to low flow areas and I'd imagine athletes would be prime candidates to use everything at their disposal to stimulate healing.)

Said once it has healed he can return but will have a removable protective hard guard worn over it probably for the duration to help protect against further contact injury. Often the wrist is somewhat immobilized by the standard version that extends beyond the wrist and attaches over the thumb, which would be an issue for a receiver, but docs might create one that doesn't extend beyond wrist freeing up the hand. Said he will be able to literally feel the plate due to lack of flesh in that area. Said for that reason most will have the plate removed eventualy, probably in a year or so.

Probably will help that he's a righty. ;)

FWIW, when Edelman broke his forearm his rookie year, they gave him some sort of lightweight carbon-fiber shield to wear on his forearm. It didn't extend past the wrist.

The key is how many fractures there are and their location along the length of the bone. Single fracture near the middle of the bone and (barring complications) it should heal quite nicely by the start of the playoffs. Multiple breaks and/or breaks near the elbow/wrist and it can be a little dicey.

As for the plate, it will never be removed. Like Anakin Skywalker, it is the first step into his inevitable transformation into an unstoppable cyborg. And like Obi-wan Kenobi, if you strike him down (in the regular season) he will become more powerful (in the playoffs) than you can possibly imagine.

Forgot about that. Went back and checked the time frame and Edelman returned 4 weeks after his injury (the 4th-n-2 Indy game) and caught a TD. Did see the sleeve you mentioned and also noticed that he shifted to his left hand to spike the ball...so he was at least conscious of the injury. He also celebrated pretty hard so it couldn't have been bothering him too much.
