Gallery is probably a better option as a starter than Wendell or McDonald. IMHO, he was hired to start if Mankins or Waters couldn't go.
There's no question in my mind that Gallery was brought in as Mankins/Waters insurance. But once camp starts, veterans with a strong reputation from elsewhere can easily turn out to not fit here.
IMO the OL backups are totally unpredictable at this point. FOUR of the players many projected to the roster haven't played yet (Mankins, Vollmer, Waters, McDonald). Meanwhile Donald Thomas has been getting raves from camp observers, Koppen is apparently having an awful camp, and multiple people have said that Gallery seems to have lost his athleticism.
One of Gallery's advantages should be his ability to play RT -- but I haven't seen any mention of him lining up at tackle so far. If he's only suited to guard and on the decline, Thomas could easily take his spot (and save $1 million against the cap).
