FILM STUDY: A Closer Look at the Tom Brady Sack and Fumble
    By: Ian Logue

A lot has been discussed today regarding the state of the Patriots offensive line, more specifically the play of the two tackles in Nate Solder and Marcus Cannon. However, here's a closer look at how the strip sack and big hit on Tom Brady unfolded last Thursday night.

Plenty to break down in the filmroom for the OL......can't wait to get some of the starters back to shore things up. The sooner the better as they will have to knock some rust off also.

This just confirms the original concern about Cannon's ability to deal with speed rushers as an OT.

Exactly. He just doesn't have the athleticism to be a full time RT. He's more or less built to be a RG. And, ideally, he's someone we want as a back-up. As a starter at RT, he's going to get Brady killed.

Did Cannon get any outside help by a TE? Looked like he could use it...

The next question for Scar is if Solder doesn't improve his play at LT, can Vollmer play LT and move Solder back to RT ....

Whoda thunk OL would be the potential weakspot for the Pats.....

Still early so I'm cautiously optimistic that the OL will solidify before the regular season starts.

I'm still hopeful he can get there, assuming the coaches know more than I do.

More disappointing to me is that he didn't pivot and try to do something -- anything -- useful, which might have put him in the general vicinity of Solder's man.

I'm not sure how much of a legal block he could have gotten on him starting from behind, but perhaps he could have caused some disruption. Or else he might have gained control over a prone Jordan.

Unless you can coach athleticism into someone, I'm highly doubtful that he can be a more effective RT than a RG.

The tackle play in the passing game was pretty bad. And like most things in football, there's a snowball effect, because if both your tackles are constantly losing the edge, now the guards have to protect that much more space on their outside shoulder, and the defensive tackles can slant away from the center's double-team help. That or the B gap becomes a very attractive place to send a delayed blitz.

I think if Solder AND Cannon improve during the preseason, it will go 90% of the way to making whatever offensive line we trot on Week 1 work. We know Connolly and Wendell can do their jobs. We think McDonald can. Thomas has started nearly a whole season before. There are working parts on the interior if the tackles play up to their talent level.

Im not that down on Solder as some people, he has a rough start last year too but honed his technique, I believe he'll do the same thing this pre season and be much improved by week 1.

Cannon's performance was disappointing. He was good enough in college to play left tackle in his senior year.

    Disable Jersey

Look on the bright side. Cannon was behind, even compared to most of the rest of last year's locked out rookies, because of the cancer treatments. He's not a rookie, but he's not much more than that.

Cannon was awful, at Solder was matched up against Smith who is a very good player.

The problem with Solder is that I thought he looked uncomfortable. He didn't look good bending his legs and moved to slow. This was not just a good d-line, it was Solder who looked almost out of shape. What I mean with that is that he didn't look natural in his pass block.

On Cannon, I thought he was bad. When run blocking he missed his guy several times and just ran passed and had to turn back to block.

    Great breakdown in the article.
    That play was a dud...

The OL will be completely different (personnel) in the reg. season.
That goes for the D as well.
