    Good Morning Everyone,

I was wondering the thoughts on the board of the Felger and Mazz show Monday. They did a great deal of the show breaking down the Patriots poor personnel moves over the course of the last several years.

They analyzed the draft, and other personnel decisions they have made. Personally, I am not against criticizing the draft or the moves, but why are they doing this after one loss?

Do you think this is an interesting discussion right now, or should we more focus on the Steelers loss as one game and discuss that more?

I will be doing my show "Patriots Fourth And Two" tonight at 7PM EST and plan on focusing on the loss. We will be breaking it down and just giving our thoughts on it.

I don't plan on talking about the draft, but I was curious what everyone thought about this topic, and the Felger and Mazz show.

    Thanks

    Russ

I think it is a relevant discussion. We are entering week 9 and our D just looks incompetent and has been for some time now. You gotta look at the reasons for it and i think personnel moves are big part of it. We are the Colts right now...a great offense that can be slowed down and a defense that can't make up for it.

OK. Thanks for your feedback. I still think there is time in the season for the defense to improve and this is one bad game.

I think its valid to be asking why you'd cut Bodden 2 days before a big game, leaving us, frankly, with unproven scrubs making up a secondary

I also think you have to question why we released Sanders and Merriweather again with very little to replace them

Yes this is one loss but its was a beat down tbh and against a likely playoff team. We'll beat the low ed teams with Brady, of course we will, the fear is against a top rated AFC team we'll come unstuck when the offense is slowed down

Some of the recent personnel moves I certainly understand. I guess I don't see the point on going back and breaking down the draft right now.

It is their show and I guess they feel Pats fans are interested in going back to the draft now.

I was curious if fans were interested, and so far they are.

I do love Felger and Mazz,

But they have done this exact same show for two years running now...Felger rants and rants and rants about the draft...always the same argument..nothing new.

For once, I wish they would stop *****ing and focus the show on what to do to fix it...it gets old.

Examine the Belichick philosophy change. Premium assets (high draft choices, big money contracts) have been utilized on the OL and TE position recently. Big contracts at LT, LG, RG, with #1 at T, and a #2 at RT. Compare that to the DL where BB once focused the highest draft picks...Seymour, Warren, Wilfork...but now is satisfied with aging castoffs from other teams. It's all about protecting Brady and maintaining continuity on the line, no matter the cost.
    The Defense.....
My guess is that BB NEVER expected McCourty to regress like we have seen this year. McCourty has gone from a 7 INT rookie phenom to arguably the most picked on CB in the league. Coming into the season, I'm betting Belichick figured McCourty's side of the field was secure, Revis style, and BB could reconfigure his remaining DBs to present a tight secondary. Not so. With QBs just gunning it at McCourty, the pass rush isn't given enough time to be effective.
A fair discussion should include COACHING. Patriots DBs regress year over year. The blitz schemes are very ineffective.
Also, tell your audience to compare the upcoming Giants DL vs the Patriots DL. Athletic vs stout. One attacks the QB unrelenting, the other excels at run stoppage. In today's NFL....who has it right?

The draft history and personnel decisions are very relevant topics for discussion. This defense is one of the worst in the NFL and has a significant lack of playmakers on it = in other words it ain't gettin' better any time soon.
On offense the wideouts are small and not terribly fast. Physical defenses (Ravens, Steelers, Jets) give them problems.
The guy who's been shopping for the groceries needs to answer for it.
The real shame is how Tom Brady's prime has been/is being wasted vis-a-vis championships because of those groceries.

Yes, Russ, focus on the Pitt loss because the Pats can expect more defensive and offensive game plans from opponents tailored in that fashion.

Assuming the Pats make the playoffs, how would the Pats defeat Pitt if the two teams faced off again?

Hope that Roethlisberger,Wallace,Keisel,Miller,Woodley,Harrison,Polamalu are all on IR?

Or maybe the Steelers give us mercy and spot us 14 points?

That seems to be the only chances

Ben was on for that game...Brady not so much..Pitt's D was tight coverage and pressure along the line.....If Pitt keeps that type of play up, they can be tough...but the Pat's play was PAThetic on both sides.....

I don't think Pitt is as good as they played vs Pats week in and week out...and I know the Pats Offense isn't that bad week in and out, but their OL has to give Brady some decent time to find his targets. Did BB pull Vollmer after his rust was evident or did he let him work it off?...The pass rush gets even tougher for the Pats OL this coming week....

What DOES concern me is lack of Patriot pressure on opposing QB's and coverage of their recievers....Pats run D should be fine.....

How they look against the Gints this week will either cause much consternation from Pats fans...or some relief...

    Stay tuned....

People have awakened from their slumber. George Cain wrote two columns on Patriot Daily pointing out the flaws. Throw in all the good free agents that were available this offseason and Belchick's failure of a GM is complete.

I think he saw something different than everyone else after the Jets loss. He must have thought they needed to just improve the OFFENSE a little. Give Brady help on the O-Line (Solder), another good wide out (Ocho) and then on Defense they could get Haynesworth, Ellis and find a pass rusher (Carter) and draft another Corner and they would be fine.

But, this is why Bill the GM has to go. He has been wrong on all assumptions.

In a draft RICH with young defensive lineman/linebackers he took none. So for next season who are your playmakers. There are at least 10 guys in the draft he passed on. Meanwhile add another year to Tom Brady.

Also, if they had just signed TWO, free agents, make Landry or Goldson at Safety, maybe Carlos Rogers or perhaps Babin they would have a much better defense. Instead they cut all their safties and found a way to replace them with undrafted bums. McCourty regressed, Bodden was cut and replaced with a bum and Ras I Dowling the THIRTY THIRD PICK, got HURT AGAIN. In a year where the AFC is down the Pats could easily have gone to the Super Bowl, with a little money and smarter drafting. They spent two picks on Running backs that don't play.

I think Felger is a contrarian azzhole and Mazz doesn't know anything about football. I think the Boston media LOVES piling on the misery 'cause the fellowship is plentiful when things go bad and status quo when things go well. It's just the way it it and I am guilty of it myself. However, I still say Felger is an azzhole and Mass is a azzhole.

Agree completely, to assess the Patriots Draft/Free Agent Signings is folly and should only be done so in a context.. names like Gholston and Maybin immediately come to mind..

Heard a stat the other day that something like 36% of the DB's drafted since 2003 are still in the NFL.. so at best all of this is a crapshoot.

What they never focus on is our successes.. Vollmer, Hernandez, Gronk, Connolly etc. Could things be better, of course.. but they ain't that bad.

It's an absolutely legitimate issue that's worthy of discussion. The variable here, however, is that Felger and Mazz both do little to hide the disdain they have for the Patriots, BB, Kraft and, in particular, Patriots' fans. So, at least in my mind, their treatment of this subject, as well as any other subject related to the Patriots, is suspect. They're both disingenuous and I believe that tarnishes their viewpoint. Once again, just my opinion.

I love it. When the Pats win, Felger is a d-bag arsehole. When the Pats lose, Felger is really onto something and insightful.

Yet another excellent misinformed post. Belichick really screwed up by not signing Goldson. It was clearly Belichick's fault for not getting this guy when the Patriots offered Goldson more than the 49ers offered but he chose to return to his old team.

And it sucks that it is November 1st and the Pats have bdeen eliminated from Super Bowl contention all ready. Let's get free agency and draft talk going since the season is over. The Pats are the first 5-2 team in history eliminated from the playoffs at the beginning of November. Let's talk how Belichick will screw up the 2012 draft.

The rebuild started the offseason before the 2009 season, and after 3 offseasons it looks like the defense is where it was or maybe regressed since then. You definitely have to question the personnel moves. And the rebuild started with 2 firm blocks already in place Wilfork and Mayo so the overall process should not take more than 3 years. The rest outside those 2 has been a constant carousel, and this current product is not what you want to see. They had a couple pretty good outings, a couple average ones, and a couple pathetic ones. If they don't turn it around in a big way soon it's time to find a new GM or a new 'sidekick'.

    Robo,

I tied to be nice, but you're an ignorant fool. You have no facts except, "You're wrong, Bill is great!" Go put on your Bruschi shirt and leave us alone. The tide has turned. Patriot fans have had it with the fanboy excuse crowd on this website. Belichick has lost his fastball and if it wasn't for Tom Brady they would be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. The fact is 5% of Patriot still believe this team is a Super Bowl contender. You could take any issue and there is always a 5% holdout. That's all you are a 5 percenter.

LOL! I love guys like you. You are nowhere to be found when the Pats win, but come here and overreact and act like you are smarter than everyone else when they lose. If the Pats win on Sunday, you will be nowhere to be found.

I would argue with you on point if you weren't so transparent. You want to pump your ego and act like you know something that everyone else doesn't know.

I have said long before this weekend I don't think the Pats are going to win the Super Bowl. They are certainly a contender and will likely win 11-13 games. This weekend wasn't going to change my mind about this team one way or another. It is Chicken Littles like you want to ignore the five wins and use this loss as the indictment of the season. Reading on this board and listening to the radio, you would think the Pats were 2-5, not 5-2. This team has issues and holes, but every team does this year.

BTW, if the Pats beat the Giants' by double digits, this board will be flooded with people saying this team is far better than we thought and the Steelers' game was an abberation. This board is filled with people who overreact week to week. I don't change my opinion of a team based on one game. I saw a steady improvement by the defense prior to this week and I will reserve judgement until we see if that trend was a mirage or the Steelers' game was in fact not an abberation.
