Well done, glad to see you have kept up your standards in a world that loves hysteria..

Love Mayo but this was pretty much inevitable. Thanks for the breakdown Miguel. The Patriots are heading into free agency in great shape imo, and that's before they redo the deals they need to get done ( Hightower, Jones, Collins)

It would seem the team would have rather parted ways by declining their option thereby including Mayo in the 2017 compensatory pick calculation. Did Mayo gain anything by retiring?

Thank you for sharing

Great analysis and very helpful. Thanks!

His health.
Agreed but I meant, all things being equal, why would a team player like Mayo retire and eliminate the possibility of the team getting a compensatory draft pick? There must be something in it for him which he decided was worth more than the pick is to the team.

In order for the Patriots to get a 2017 compensatory pick
1.) Mayo would have to sign a contract with another team
2.) Mayo has to play a good number of games during the 2016 season for that team.
3.) Pats have to sign fewer UFAs than they lose in free agency.

If he does not want to play football anymore, why go through the motions just to maybe get the Patriots a 2017 compensatory pick.

Thanks Miguel. That makes sense now. I assumed, based on your post, the team would get the pick if they did not pick up the option.

Do not know how you came to that assumption from
Q: What is the difference between Mayo retiring and the Patriots declining Mayo's option?
A: Mayo is no longer eligible to be included in the 2017 compensatory pick calculations.
