re: Erik Frenz: Patriots sign Olympic track star & Florida UDFA RB/WR/KR Jeff Demps

My thoughts:

- Great place for Demps. Effectively Gainesville North and no expectations on him to be a difference-maker on offense.

- Solid hole-filler for the Pats. Immediate upgrade for KR. Can slowly integrate into the offense as needed.

- Doesn't need the ball to affect a defense. Have to stay at home if they show reverse with Demps. If Demps lines up outside, dangerous to leave CB on an island without deep help. Continues the theme of making defenses pay if they compress the short-intermediate middle of the field.

- Outstanding addition for the Pats if they get inventive on offense. Demps, Vereen, Gronk, Hernandez, Lloyd/Welker. Too fast to go big. Too strong to go small.

- If the Pats trust Demps to return punts (or are willing to let Welker do it), then Edelperson picked a really bad time to get kicked out of practice. If the Pats are willing to line up Demps outside and just let him run go routes, then Stallworth may want to rent instead of buying.

Two UDFA rookie RBs?

Ridley, Vereen, Woodhead, Bolden, Demps

A Patriots niche.

Woodhead was UDFA and so was BJGE.

Ivan Fears is Coach Scar 2.0

5'7 175, not bad since he had to be a twig for the Olympics. He'll probably weigh 185 by next week after eating :D

his shiftieness looks a lot like woody, he's just a lot faster...if he sees the light he's gone for the TD. I'm excited!

Yeah, they'll just put him on the Aaron Maybin diet. He'll gain 20 pounds in 2-3 days. ;)

He's only returned 21 kicks in his career so it'll be interesting to see how good he can be. He's not a lock to make the roster by any stretch.

Jeff Demps Statistics | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

He's returned 20 in the last two years, with a 25.5 average and a TD. That's not bad. Statistically, it's better than what we have right now.

I wonder how his catching ability is. Would love to split him out wide once and a while just to "take the top off the defense"

re: Erik Frenz: Patriots sign Olympic track star & Florida UDFA RB/WR/KR Jeff Demps

Isn't Woodhead one hit away from IR too? Just because he's small doesn't mean he'll get hurt with every hit. You'd think Sproles would be out of the league by now.

I watch the Gators religiously on Saturdays. Demps was hurt a few times from big hits. Woodhead has only really gotten one since he's been with the Pats, and he's never been the same since.

Not a lot of mileage on his wheels. Never had more than 100 carries per season but his ypc and td percentage are off the charts. Last year he had 78 carries at a 7.8 ypc and 7 tds. Basically that amounts to every 10 or 11 times he was handed the ball he scored a td.

He's got some sick talent at rb but he has a long, long way to go to being a contributing rb out of the backfield. He would have to show blitz pick up and pass protection right away to even see the field with Brady. Never mind he still has to learn to play on special teams for the Pats where they will certainly be targeting him.

Get your hopes up all you want about being a Sproles type player. He is years away if ever imo. If he was, then all 32 teams would of been all hands on deck trying to sign this kid with ridiculous offers.

MJD was selected 60th overall. Sometimes players begin to thrive in the NFL. I'm not saying he's that type of player.

Watch more Gator football. He's got some fine-tuning to do, but he's not "years away" from being a Sproles type player. Further, there were three teams that were FRONT RUNNERS in the race for Demps. That doesn't mean that only three teams wanted him.

How is Demps compared to Rainey ? Rainey went in the 5th round, had twice as many carries as Demps but Demps' average was 5.8 vs. Rainey's 5.0. Seems like Demps is more explosive but I didn't watch Florida a lot last year.

You know I was joking right? lol.

I assumed as much I was just pointing out that we are getting a slightly slower Usain Bolt but who has football experience!!

Your right. The list goes on and on, Martin,Davis, Johnson. There's always another chance of finding a needle in a hay stack.

Darren Sproles

Year Team Games Attempts Yards YPA TDs Long
2001 Kansas State 6 28 210 7.5 1 38
2002 Kansas State 13 237 1,465 6.2 17 80
2003 Kansas State 15 306 1,986 6.5 16 73
2004 Kansas State 11 244 1,318 5.4 11 74
Career 45 815 4,979 6.1 45 80

Jeff Demps

Year Stat Carries Yards Average TD
2008 Rushing 78 605 7.8 7
2009 Rushing 99 745 7.5 7
2010 Rushing 92 551 6.0 3
2011 Rushing 98 569 5.8 6

Demps probably played a lot less games.

re: Erik Frenz: Patriots sign Olympic track star & Florida UDFA RB/WR/KR Jeff Demps

Yes, Demps was generally projected to go "Day 3."

But, um ~ hello?? ~ that was because of the risk that he wouldn't sign at all!!

We have just pilfered a 2nd Round Talent, Ladies and Laddies!!

That's not entirely unreasonable, given that Detroit used a 2nd round pick (#54 overall) on Ryan Broyles, who was still recovering from an ACL injury. Demps would probably have gone in the 3rd-5th range, but with his upside a 2nd round "reach" wouldn't have been out of the question.

A couple of thoughts:

1. Demps obviously meets an immediate need in the return game this year, but he also plays into the "Uncertainty Theory" approach of the team. Both Woodhead and Welker are FAs this year, and Demps has a ton of upside both as a 3rd down back/receiving threat out of the backfield and as a potential slot receiver. Let him play a return role this year, and see how he develops. Not a bad option.

2. A RB group of Vereen, Ridley, Woodhead, Bolden and Demps would be VERY nice. Ridley and Bolden are both 5'11" 225# guys with power, explosiveness, and decent receiving ability. Woodhead and Demps are both small guys with great speed and elusiveness who can be used as receiving options out of the backfield and on screens. And Vereen is a bit in between both extremes, with the best all-around receiving and ball skills of the group and the strength and power to potentially be a full-time back.

3. It's going to be hard for a FB to make the squad right now, especially with Larsen not on the field. In fact, carrying 5 RBs and 3 QBs would effectively limit the team to probably 8 WRs + TEs, which would be a difficult squeeze.

Demps is better in the passing game, and off the edges in the run game while Rainey is better straight up the gut. Demps is faster and is more of a threat to take it to the house though while I felt that Rainey juked a little too much instead of hitting any seam he saw and exploding. Together, though, they were by far the fastest backfield in the NCAA.
