Many people wanted him gone not because of bad performances but because he was always injured for years early in his career. You can't fault them for that a lot of them just don't truly support our players. They probably wanted tom cut after four games last year too, but there is no excuse for that.
With all due respect, then your recall just isn't very accurate, as a number of people have pointed out. They said he wouldn't be a good reciever but, I can't recall anybody calling for him to be cut. At worst he was an excellent punt returner.
Huh? They we're on the same page practically from the moment he first stepped on the field. His first game as a Pat he had 8 catches for 98 yards. That's the same season he had to step up in the last game after Welker blew out his knee and had 10 catches for 103 yards. It was /never/ about being on the same page with Brady it was whether he could withstand the rigors of NFL football without being injured too much. There's no question there was a time when it seemed that the question of Edelman and Brady getting on the same page with timing, etc. seemed very much in doubt
I find it tough to fault those who suggested moving on and trying someone else as we've been down the road of busts at WR or just guys who didn't mesh with Brady, even if talented
I don't think I ever advocated for his being cut - in part because he seemed to have Special Teams value at the very least, and I think I was always in his corner as I like converted QBs - for both their overall on field savvy - and the fact that perhaps Edelman's experience there allowed us to save a roster spot and go down to just 2 QBs
... and in fact I think for all but one year, the Patriots did indeed go with just the 2 QBs - so I always factor that in to a players' value - all things being equal Edelman wasn't really "costing" a roster spot IMO and that bought him time to develop other areas of his game
No one ever said that.
I was going to say exactly the same. He caught a screen on the far side, got swarmed by 6 defenders, and stayed alive longer than I've ever seen any player stay alive in that situation to eke out 5 yards instead of losing 5. Heart of steel.
Who else remembers when posters were always calling for Edelman to be cut every offseason?
TRUE.
Maybe there is hope for Aaron Dropsem too.
Aaron is just so damn disappointing. I remember everybody here (myself included) was that big bodied deep threat we've been missing since Randy. He looked like a beast in college, had a pretty good rookie year (especially that Pittsburgh game), and then he fell off a cliff. Maybe he'll have a resurgence, idk. But I think the job is pretty much Keyshawn's.I doubt it, he seems far more concerned about his sneakers than he does football, and I'm one of those who has stuck by him but his performance this season showed no progress. He seems to lack what Edelman has in spades, heart, desire, toughness and the spirit to fight. I wish it were otherwise because he would be a nice piece for them to have but when you watch Keyshawn Martin come in and win a spot the way he has it is hard to stick by Dobson any longer.
Julian Edelman's pain tolerance and competitiveness drives him in playoffsA source close to Edelman described what he’s doing this way: “Extreme desire and will, combined with pain tolerance and competitiveness.”
