I believe that the NFL will conclude its investigationinto the deflated footballs used by the New England Patriots during their AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts that neither head coach Bill Belichick nor quarterback Tom Brady deliberately did anything to deflate the footballs below the league limit of 12.5 pounds per square inch.

In other words, that when it comes to cheating, whatBelichick and Brady have said during their press conferences is the truth.

It is not unusual for quarterbacks to have footballs worked over before games to get them they way they like. In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times in 2012, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson said that before Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003, he paid some unidentified people $7,500 to doctor the 100 footballs allocated for use in that game. Johnson didn’t say that he had the air pressure altered; he said that he had the balls scuffed, which wasn’t legal at the time but is now. And during aCBS broadcast of this season’s matchup between the Green Bay Packers and New England on Nov. 30, announcer Phil Simms said Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers preferred footballs that were inflated slightly beyond the specified limit. “Every team tampers with the footballs,” Matt Leinart said on Twitter. “Ask any Qb In the league, this is ridiculous!!”

What I think happened is the Patriots equipment manager, or whomever deals with getting the footballs the way Brady prefers them, deflated the balls below the 12.5 pounds per square inch, or, had the footballs right at the legal minimum and the weather caused the weight of the footballs to fall below the minimum PPSI.

The media has been quick to jump on Spygate–when the Patriots videotaped the defensive signals of the New York Jets during a game–as evidence that Belichick is a serial cheater. But the media seems to have forgotten that, Jack Del Rio, then the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, said at the time it was commonplace to study actions on the opposing sideline. ”I think all teams do that,” he said. That’s been going on forever.” And former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson said at the time: This is exactly how I was told to do it 18 years ago by a Kansas City Chiefs scout. I tried it, but I didn’t think it helped us. Bill Belichick was wrong because he videotaped signals after a memo was sent out to all teams saying not to do it. But what irritates me is hearing some reactions from players and coaches. These players don’t know what their coaches are doing, and some of the coaches have selective amnesia because I know for a fact there were various teams doing this. That’s why the memo was sent to everybody. That doesn’t make Belichick right, but a lot of teams are doing this.”

This doesn’t make Belichick innocent in 2007, but it doesn’t exactly make him some sort of serial cheater, either. I suspect the NFL will fine the Patriots (think something along the lines of the Pac-12 fining USC for using deflated footballs against Oregon in 2012) after the Super Bowl for the deflated footballs, and put in place some sort of rule changes to ensure footballs that are used during games to meet the league requirements. But I doubt the NFL will find any evidence Brady or Belichick knowingly had the footballs deflated.

WEEI had a Professor Collins of MIT on their show this morning and he broke it down very well, regarding the effects of temp vs. the air pressure of the ball.. really easy to understand.

The transcript is not up yet, but he said that for every ten degrees the PSI of a football will drop .5 PSI... so if it was measured at 70-75 degrees in the locker room, when it hit the field and the temp dropped to 48, there would be a decrease of 23-28 degrees, combined with the "rubbing" of the football, he corraborated what BB said on Saturday..

If you get a chance check it out, as am sure WEEI will have it up soon..

Huh? No one is saying that BB was "innocent" in 2007. The truth is that BB and the Pats were punished far too harshly for a minor issue that most of the other teams were doing. Maybe the NFL is simply incompetent, but the evidence that there is a bias against the Pats by high level NFL officials is growing and is likely being actively investigated.

BB picked up the NFL's gauntlet, and the outcome of this battle alter the course of NFL history. I hope he and his allies gather enough evidence to prove the roles of each of the colluding parties. It is my hope that BB wins and the perception of him turns from "cheater" to "Savior of the NFL".

But...but...Bill Nye The Science Guy.....

MIT is all well and good but I don't see this Professor Collins on TV with his own science based entertainment show. He probably doesn't even wear a ****ie bow. I'm going to wait till Mythbusters release their findings before making my mind up.

But but Bill Nyw, the glorified middle school teacher, said it didn't make any sense!

I didn't say that...it was the article! LOL

A mod really should go through an condense all this garbage now that its basically a nonfactor. no need for 8 different threads on the same subject.

Do NOT lobby congress about NFL anti-trust
Without it, there can be no draft
Players just go to richest owners
Sport ruined

If anyone would know about chicanery like this, it would be mob influenced gambling sites. After all many of the regulations have to do with making sure Vegas can set the line correctly.

"Let's get those injury reports out in time, we need to even out the bets on this game."

He said > as much as it pains me to says it, I believe them or BB I cant remember

This may not be popular but did I believe Bill Belichick? Yes.

HAhahahahahaha. Mort trying to get in front of the parade, but will end up walking behind the elephants and their droppings.

Hi RayClay, lol elephants aren't in parades anymore. Mankind must protect the elephants. So it could be horses and horse$hit.

I like your signature I am a fan of a NHL team that collects players and doesn't build a team so I stole your signature and added a couple of words to my signature. Have a nice day. Thanks for your reply to my post about Lynch.

That signature is sacred. It is a replica, of the all caps statement in the patriots locker room. EDIT, I guess it was in Pioli's old office when he was personnel guy, but it's attributed to Belichick.

When mocking butthead writers like Mort, there is much poetic license granted. Certainly Mort deserves more dung to slip on than mere horses could produce, hence the elephants.
