    #12 Jersey

Looking at Lewis stats it looks a little like what David Patten did in his years in Cleveland and the Giants prior to joining the Pats - Not so spectacular but not horrible either.

If Lewis can provide the quality years that Patten gave us including 2 years of 800+ yards it will be a steal of a 5th round pick

The one thing that is a difference is that Patten didn't have any all star WRs around him like Lewis will have now thus Patten got the ball more and had better stats because of it,but Lewis still could produce better than Gaffney and Caldwell did here.

Yikes ! Maybe you should start lowering your expectations if you thibk this guy's coming in here to catch 800+ yards. Now, if you mean 800 yards DURING the two years, maybe you're right. To be honest, I like the pickup, but I'd be very surprised (and thrilled) if anyone looks back at this and sees a steal... I am just hoping for a body to occupy a defender while Wes and Moss pick up 1st downs.

There's no way Greg Lewis makes this team.

....sorry, had to get it in before somebody else did. :D

Yeah, I'll be surprised if he makes it to the 53.

I think he'll be on the team. We've had room for Aiken, Ventrone, Izzo, Earthwind Moreland...

There was about 90% of this forum (including me) who thought a certain QB would never make the team by the last week of exhibition.

That QB not only made the team but started and played in all 16 games last season and is now a multi-million dollar man.

    Need I say more?

I question why the Eagles traded a player signed multiyear for cheap $$ for so little.

Heh... it's an old Patsfans.com joke about Patten. I actually do think Lewis finds a spot on the 53, just like I thought Cassel would. It's just obligatory, with David Patten in the title, somebody has to throw in the required "no way makes this team" line. :D

Am I missing the sarcasm or are you serious here ? It would be quite bizarre for BB to trade for a player who has NO shot of making the 53... I still think he finds a spot.

Also... someone please fill me in on the Patten "no way..." remark - I am not familiar with the back story.

They've got a logjam of young WRs (on their rookie contracts) they're developing who also play special teams. I think everybody BUT Lewis had at least 3 starts last year. So the older, limited upside JAG was shipped out for a decent draft pick.

Right now Hank Baskett is #5 on their depth chart. He is, like Lewis, a serviceable NFL WR.

    #12 Jersey

Factoring in a certain #12 that tends to make his WRs look like world beater, I won't be surprised al all if Greg Lewis turns in 60 catch 800 yd next year and better the following year.

BTW, he better catches a slant TD in the next SB if he wants to better David Patten.

There was a long thread way back (you can't find it in the archives, I don't think, because it was before the redoing of the website) in which was titled, "There is no way David Patten makes this team." I think it was 2003 or 2004. Long, drawn out off-season thread. It's kind of a joke now.

To answer your first question, the guy who said IMPOSSIBLE for Lewis to make the 53 is just a clueless maroon. Lewis probably will make the team, and although thre is always the chance he doesn't, to say it is impossible for him to make it is simply an indictment of whatever school system allegedly 'educated' this poster.

yeah I really dont like this guy as a player....Philly has needed wr's every year except for the one t.o. year, and this guy has been there the last several years, and he could barely crack the starting lineup and kept getting passed over for guys like Reggie Brown and Hank Baskett....I know hes suppose to fast and a decent return guy, but he also has a rep for breaking down frequently. If you had given me a list of 100 wr's with his name on it, then told me the Pats were gonna trade for one of the names on the list....HE WOULD HAVE BEEN #99 THAT I PICKED, WITH THE LAST NAME BEING T.O.!

    Nice!

Whether he makes the team depends on how he does on the camp. If he knows the offense, works on his hands and gets in synch with #12, #81 and #83, he makes the team.

Why would BB give away draft picks to get a guy that has potential to be cut?

I do have high hopes for Lewis here. I think he will be slated as the #3. He showed flashes a few years back, and with Brady throwing to him he should be able to follow the path of Caldwell and Gaffney and thrive.

Thanks for the info (re : Patten) - I am obviously of the opinion that there is no good reason to pick up someone with 0% chance (which is not the case here... he CAN be cut, but I think he'll hang).

OT : is that the "other lady" BB picked up ? Yikes ! I'm a lot younger than BB, but I can see what he sees in her...

Caldwell, Gaffney, Patten, Givens... we've made careers for a number of ho-hum talents. They all did well for us, and deserved what they got.

Branch and Welker, too, who are a different caliber of talent, are still more famous for being Patriots than for what they've done elsewhere.

I think this system just makes stars out of WRs who take coaching and do their jobs. I expect the same from Lewis.

Can't see how David Pattens situation could be much different from the one this guy faces. Patten was given a starting WR job and did well. The other starter was a career special teamer/3rd down specialist (after the only legitimate starter d-i-d flake out).

The third receiver ended upbeing a guy with two catches named Coleman after a couple other bad fits faded.

By contrast, Lewis walks onto a team with possibly the greatest receiver to have played the game and the current prototype for the slot receiver. [As great as Jerry Rice is, he's Hank Aaron to Randy Moss's Babe Ruth talentwise IMO.]

Patten had a challenge and plenty of room to spread his wings. Lewis has a very limited role in which he needs to carve out a niche to complement two very talented incumbents.

He seems to have been productive with limited opportunities and that will be his role. Seems to have been a very productive special teamer too.
