NFLDraftScout has this news report:
03/24/07 - Former Texas cornerback Tarell Brown of North Mesquite posted bond and was released from the Williamson County Jail on Friday after being charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. It's the second time Brown has been charged with a misdemeanor in the last seven months. Brown's attorney, Jamie Balagia of Austin, said Brown was the passenger in a car that was pulled over by police for a routine traffic stop Thursday. After police discovered there was an outstanding arrest warrant for the driver, authorities found a baggie with marijuana residue inside the car, Balagia said. "Tarell Brown had nothing to do with the residue found by police. It belonged to the driver," Balagia said. "But in Williamson County, they arrest everyone in the car. Brown doesn't do drugs, has never done drugs and plans on taking a drug test to show everyone exactly that." The Class B misdemeanor is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine. Brown hopes to be selected in next month's NFL draft. He performed for NFL scouts during Texas' pro timing day Wednesday, running the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. Brown started 35 games for Texas, including 11 of 13 games last season. One of his missed starts last season – in September against Ohio State – was because of a one-game suspension connected to a misdemeanor gun charge. - Chip Brown, Dallas Morning News
Marvin Lewis is reported to have dispatched his DB Coach, a team lawyer, and a Welcome to Cincinnati briefing kit immediately following the story hitting his desk.

Hall (A=4, B=3,C=5,D=4,E=4,F=5) Total Score = 25.
Revis (A=3,B=5,C=4,D=4,E=4,F=4) Total Score = 24.

Just wondering why Hall gets the edge on Revis in speed? I think Revis actually has (slightly) better game speed, and he ran a "timed" 4.3/40 at his pro day.

Okay then, I'm not putting as much energy into CBs as I did last year, it seems like most of the competition will be for Practice Squad slots or nickelback.

Round one: Darrelle Revis and Leon Hall, I expect them to be long gone by #24.

Round Two: This is where I believe the Pats will first have CBs to consider.

Jonathan Wade (Tennessee): He caught my eye at the Combine, looking much smoother in drills than I had expected from a player classified as a track athlete. Reportedly he had a good season, one where people noted his performance looked more like a football player and less like a track star. I watched him in the Senior Bowl and saw some good and some work needed - if BB wants a project with a high ceiling, this would be a good kid.

Josh Wilson (Maryland): Excellent nickelback prospect, tough man cover guy, smurf, very good Senior Bowl.

A.J. Davis (NC State): The write-ups talk about his quicks and how he doesn't bite on fakes, excellent in coverage. Reported to be an okay tackler, but needs work.

Round Three

Michael Coe (Alabama State): Lost his job to Houston at Arkansas, transferred for his Senior year. Compares to Cory Webster.

Fred Bennett (South Carolina): Adequate cover corner with decent read/react skills. Reluctant in run support, but has been contacted by the Patriots.

Fifth Round

Ryan Smith (Florida): Started 32 of 35 games played at Utah and Florida. Small, wiry kid who will stick his nose in on run support and likes to hit, but his size limits his impact. Compares to Ray Mickens and is worth consideration for nickelback.

Corey Graham (New Hampshire): Productive CB/KR coming off a broken leg.

Courtney Brown (Cal Poly): Big athletic CB who excelled at the lower level and had an outstanding Pro-Day.

Sixth Round

DeAndre Jackson (Iowa State): Four year starter, KR, coming off an ACL injury.

Reggie Lewis (Florida): Converted WR, borderline straightline speed, but very good change of direction numbers. Raw talent that could be developed on the Practice Squad. Has had off-field issues, reportedly fought with a coach in High School, has a chip on his shoulder and may be a locker room issue - then again, Rodney has a chip to match any he might have.

Larry Anam (BC): Athletic CB/FS with great straightline speed and good change of direction numbers from his Pro-day. Won award as student athlete who best met the ideal for BC athletes on and off the field.

Seventh Round

Alan Ball (Illinois): Four year starter, finished #3 in Big 10 for passes defended in conference games.

Tim Mixon (California): Nickelback prospect/PR. Missed 06 season with ACL injury. Considered by many to be the more well-rounded athlete when paired with Daymeion Hughes, team leader, high character player.

John Talley (Duke): Highly productive CB in the ACC, borderline athlete.

Usama Young (Kent State): Three year starter, physical, knack for the ball, good tackler, good Pro-day numbers, recruited to Kent State by Dean Pees. If the Pats want him, they may have to go day one per a story in the Ravenna Record Courier.

UDFA

Trumaine McBride (Mississippi): Three year starter, smurf, team leader, looked good in Combine drills, Pro-day numbers improved on borderline Combine numbers.

Marcus Hamilton (Virginia): Three year starter, finished career tied with Ronde Barber for third in school record in interceptions, good run support.

William Gay (Louisville): Began starting as a true freshman, had five interceptions, 55 tackles, two sacks and 11 pass breakups this season. The Pats need another Gay CB.

Antonio Smith (Ohio State): Selected by his teammates as the winner of the Bo Rein Award as the team's most inspirational player. Smith, a former walk-on, was converted to scholarship in the spring and wound up winning first-team All-Big Ten honors this season.

Calvin Bannister (Hampton): Smurf, Rated the best man coverage defender in the NCAA Division 1-AA ranks by the NFL Draft Report.

Mike Richardson (Notre Dame): If not a typo, his Pro-day 3-cone is the best in the draft. Seemd the best of a weak secondary when I watched games live.

Joe Garcia (Nevada): String bean, had a decent Hula Bowl.

Ramzee Robinson (Alabama): Smurf, team leader, three year starter.

No love for Kenny Scott out of Georgia Tech?

Box, love your list. If I had compiled a quickie list it would have read:

Darrelle Revis
Leon Hall
Jonathan Wade
Josh Wilson
Michael Coe
Courtney Brown
DeAndre Jackson
Usama Young
John Talley

You listed all those players, in almost exactly the same order. And of course, the ommisions are as important as the inclusions. (Paging Chris Houston!) So my work is now done. ;)

But...Marcus McCauley is still on my radar. A ton depends on Pat Hill's candid account of what really happened his senior year.

"Just an adequate worker who needs to be monitored...Struggles some in the classroom and has a history of being late or missing team meetings...Needs to show better maturity off the field."

I watched McCauley's Senior Bowl, not just the practice but how he actually played the game. He's supposedly at a job interview and it looks like he's playing timid. I wasn't looking for him to de-cleat anyone, but I would have liked to see some aggression, the way top of the second round guys Josh Wilson and Jonathan Wade played.

Omissions such as...Aaron Ross?

Why are he and Chris Houston currently off your board?

Inquiring minds want to know.

For myself, I believe Aaron Ross to be too inconsistent for a 1st round talent. Houston is reported to be timid in run support.

While at the supermarket over the weekend, I thumbed through The Sporting News Draft Preview. Russell Lande of GM Jr. is running the draft for TSN this year. If memory serves, he pegged both Houston and Michael Griffin as late 3/early 4th-round worthy. This blew my mind. Has he ever correctly nailed a prospect as being way overrated, in previous drafts?

BTW, How's Reggie Nelson viewed vs. the run?

I'd have to research it since he's not on my radar. The FSs I'm interested in are Weddle and Gattis, though I'd prefer one of the 220 guys like Piscatelli, Herring, Wendling, Payne, Stone, Dahl...

I listed this kid as a UDFA prospect in one of the draft games, but screened him out when putting together my CB board.

03/30/07 - Cornerback Marquice Cole went into his senior season at Northwestern as a pro prospect and came out of it with something to prove. He ran his way back into better NFL draft status Thursday at the school's pro timing day, running the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the school's indoor facility. Not too bad, but I can run faster," said the Hillcrest High product, who had only two interceptions as a senior after picking off five as a junior. His career punt-return average of 13.8 yards figures to help him. "I think returning punts will help me," he said. "It shows versatility." Nick Roach, whose season ended with a broken leg Oct. 21, couldn't finish his 40 when the linebacker aggravated a hamstring injury. - Terry Bannon, Chicago Tribune

Another kid who flashed some spiffy Pro-day times: John Bowie (Cincinnati) - 03/28/07 - UC held its Pro Day workout Tuesday at Nippert Stadium. Bowie was timed in the range of 4.3 seconds for his 40-yard dash, hearing some watches caught him a little faster, some a little slower. Not much slower, however. That wasn't unexpected. What Bowie needed to show the scouts in attendance was that he was more than just someone who can run fast in straight line. He thinks he accomplished that despite some trouble with the short shuttle drill in which he slipped a couple times and it took him four tries to get a usable time. "I got a lot of positive feedback from the coaches and scouts and I talked to," said Bowie. "They saw some things I need to work on but they liked how I flipped my hips and other techniques." One thing Bowie needs to improve upon is catching the football. Harlon Barnett, his former position coach at UC who moved on to Michigan State when Mark Dantonio took that head coaching job last November, reminded him almost daily about that deficiency. "The one thing that hurts John, and I always tease him about it, is his hands," said Barnett, a Princeton High School grad who played seven seasons in the NFL. "That's the one thing he has to work on and hopefully he has since I left back in November. He's got the size and speed and he can be physical when he needs to be. - Kevin Goheen, Cincinnati Post

Gil Brandt snuck in a late Pro-day result: http://www.nfl.com/draft/analysis/individual_workouts

Tuff Harris CB Montana: Harris (5-11 5/8, 196) ran his 40s in 4.50 and 4.53 seconds (and was clocked with a 10-yard split of 1.52 seconds). He also ran the short shuttle in 4.26 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.96. In addition, he had a 39½-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-2 broad jump.

NFLDraftScout.com:

He began returning punts in UM's fourth game (Weber State) of the season and ended up ranked second in the Big Sky Conference and 14th in the nation, averaging 12.64 yards on 25 attempts. He was a first team All-Big Sky pick as a return specialist and honorable mention all-league at cornerback. 1st team All-Big Sky RS w/36 TT, 2 TFL, 4 PBU, 23-291-1-12.7 PR in '05. 62 TT, TFL, 4 INT, 8 PBU in '04. 25 TT, INT, 3 PBU, blocked kick, 1-17-17.0 PR, 2-80-40.0 KR in '03.

My top 3 CBs:

Darrelle Revis
Josh Wilson
AJ Davis

My other favorites are all day two prospects.

I want to pose an interesting question. Who is the most likely CB to switch to Safety and become a standout?

My nominee is Kenny Scott from Georgia Tech. He has speed, size and size potential. His coverage ability is good but not great for a CB. His hips are not quite good enough for a standout CB, but he does tackle and hit. That says a Safety conversion will work with potential to create a star FS. As a FS, he would be a top coverage safety with great speed.

Many big CBs are timid tacklers; so they don't make good Safeties. That doesn't apply to Kenny.

Well, he said Tom Brady was third round talent and would be a good Pro, while everyone else said Brady was a late rounder, and probably wouldn't make it in the pro game.

Interesting. When the next issue of SN (should be a pre-draft special) arrives, I'll buy it and save it for the next few years.

Bennett is a timid tackler, with great size, and speed. I can't speak to CJ...
