The way their draft sorted out, Smith seems a very reasonable pick there.

Interesting that they have Oher slipping all the way to 28.

I thought so too. I personally can't see Oher getting past Detroit at #20 if they go with Stafford at #1. He's athletic enough that they could probably justify the pick by drafting him as a WR. :D

Clay Mathews Jr. going at #20 I would have had another player as the BPA on defense at that point. I am not totally sold on Mathews and think that would be a huge reach possibly they would trade down if there guys was not there at 20. Oher sliding to #28 was surprising as well.

Matthews at #20 is the earliest I've seen him mocked. Oher as mentioned, is also a surprise at #28.

When looking at the picks in the vicinity of #23 - Clay Matthews (20), Brandon Pettigrew (21), Alphonso Smith (23), and Larry English (24). They could all be considered Pats prospects. And if all were available at #23 on draft day, I'll be very curious which of those four BB has rated #1 on their board.

Even though there are other CB options later on, I'd go with Alphonso from those four.

If you are looking for an ideal Pats CB, then you have it in Smith.

    -Quick Twitch
    -Outstanding Ball Skills
    -Instinctive and Intelligent
    -Decent Tackler
    -Special Teams experience

If he runs a good 40 and a great 3 cone, then I would not be too terribly disappionted if BB snatched him up in the 1st round.

At the moment he's the "safe" pick of the first round.

Does nobody else have a problem with Pettigrew's assault and battery on a police officer? It may have been exaggerated on police reports, but something definitely occured. He's certainly not a first day pick in my eyes.

Notice the columnist at that site?

I have been thinking about a "safe" pick for the Pats and I think it is Tyson Jackson of LSU. Ar 6'5" and 290 plus pounds, he is a true 3-4 DE and his game in the NFL projects to be just like Ty Warren's.

However we all know BB does not play the safe card, he plays the value card. So where is the value in the last third of the first round? DE/OLB Tweeners. (Maybin, Cushings, Mathews, Everette, Kruger, English, Sintim)

Maybin is too "maybe." Cushing is too inflated. Matthews is a project with upside. Kruger is inflated by the Sugar Bowl. English is a project with upside - mostly at ILB or a 4-3 SLB. Sintim is the only 'instant' contributor in that bunch. I agree that Jackson is a "safe" choice, one I almost made in my mock trying to be safe - instead I went with Sintim whom people can only criticize by saying he's stiff in coverage and has limited upside - but that's as a 3-4 OLB or a SLB and not as a 3-4 ILB which is where I think he goes to free Mayo up for the fun.

I'll have to think a little more about safe in that range.
