Matt Waldman has a detailed analysis of Lance Lewis, WR out of East Carolina, (6'1", 209 lbs, unofficial 40 - 4.50). He directly compares him to Brandon Lloyd in terms of his ability to adjust to the ball and for his route running skills. Interesting read.

Doing some further research, here's Sideline Scouting's scouting report. Some extracts:

Plays physical and does a good job of fighting off press coverage... Runs good routes, cuts well at the top of the stem, does a good job of creating separation with his routes... Terrific hands, does a great job of catching the ball away from his body and rarely drops a pass... Has great coordination and body control to adjust to poorly thrown balls... Has a nice vertical and can high point the ball... A reliable target who has a knack for finding the first down marker, will be a good third down target... Good blocker who attacks defenders

Poor vertical receiver who doesn't have the necessary speed to get behind the defense... Is more of a possession receiver, doesn't have much capability down the field, only had three catches go for over 20 yards as a senior... Doesn't have many open field moves and usually goes down after making the catch, doesn't have much natural running ability.

And Wes Bunting:

Lewis looks bigger and thicker than his frame would indicate. He's a sneaky quick receiver off the line with good coordination and has enough short area quickness to get corners off balance in press-man and get into is route. He lacks a great first step, doesn't have "plus" initial explosion and isn't going to run away from defenders initially down the field. However, he builds speed as he goes and, despite not looking that fast, has that sneaky extra gear when tracking the football. He doesn't gain a ton of separation vertically, but locates the ball well, adjusts extremely well to the play and is natural catching the football over his outside shoulder even with defenders draped on him. He's a naturally strong kid who can fend off corners in jump ball situations. He also maintains balance when asked to adjust, using his big frame to box out defensive backs and attack the football at its highest point. He plays big in jump ball situations and will protect his quarterback.

Lewis exhibits plus balance and coordination as a route runner as well. He does a nice job keeping his feet under him cleanly/sharply getting out of his breaks on inward breaking routes. He lacks a great burst, though, and isn't going to create a ton of separation. However, he uses his body well to box out receivers, extending his long arms and naturally plucking off his frame. He's coordinated enough to adjust to throws off his frame and he will go get the football. He displays natural physicality to his game after the catch, but isn't a burner or huge make-you-miss guy. He will get after it in the run game and with a strong, compact frame, he likes to be physical and is a nasty crack-back blocker.

Impression: A big guy who can line up both inside and out, cleanly get out of his breaks and track the football. Lewis isn't overly dynamic, but has good play speed tracking the football and is guy who could mature into a starter, but more so as a prominent reserve.

As a late round option, he sounds like an almost ideal Patriots fit. A Brandon Lloyd/Wes Welker/ Mohamed Sanu-lite cross if you will.

The problem being the Pats don't have any late round picks currently. That of course may change on Draft Day.

Most sites I've seen have Lewis as a 5th-6th rounder.

I have a free agent sleeper for safety. Matt Daniels of Duke. Tis kid played on some really bad teams, yet he really stands outon film. Hard to tell if he got beat in coverage or if he was covering for others, but he appeared to cover well when in man.

He only ran a 4.55, but he is such a good tackler, that I could see BB giving him a shot as an UDFA.

Good find. I think BB jumps more into UDFA with fewer low picks.

Bill absolutely must be more aggressive in the UDFA market, esp. at WR & FS. He needs to find our version of Victor Cruz. And signing Brian Lainhart, who was in Foxborough last month, would be a good start to create some competition at FS, after Jimmy Sanders has been re-signed for the vet minimum and the trash known as Sergio Brown, Bret Lockett & Mal Williams have been thrown in the dumpster. And poor little Ross Ventrone; he tries, but he just doesn't belong on an NFL roster, esp. one with championship aspirations.
