Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

Ah...the trend of speaking before fact checking continues...

and of selective use of quotes
PFT reports,“He was fired here for poor job performance,” Belichick said of Walsh. “There’s not a lot of credibility.”
Failing to mention the part of the quote referring to taping Pioli
The better quote in full was....

"WHAT HIS AGENDA IS, AGAIN, HE WAS FIRED FOR POOR JOB PERFORMANCE AND FOR AUDIO TAPING HIS SUPERIOR. ..."

Re: Great Title

"Patriots coach Bill Belichick slams Matt Walsh’s credibility in CBS interview"

I love this title! The rest is good solid reporting. Well done Shalise.

BB slapped him well- classic stuff from him, and I'm glad he did it. Every day Matt Walsh's role in the Pats' organization grows- from videographer to private counsel and advisor- this Rock Star crap has to end.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

I for one feel much better after seeing that. Man, I am glad BB is on our side. Thanks.

Me too.

The message is: we were doing what we were doing pretty openly and thought that we were OK because we weren't using the tapes in the game and, anyway, lots of other teams were doing the same thing. We were only videotaping what everyone could see.

Then this memo comes round and I didn't see it! I'm not throwing anyone under the bus because I'm the head coach of the organization and I take responsibility. But you can be d*mn sure that I will read all league memos carefully in future.

NOW PLEASE GO AWAY!

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

Saw the truncated version on CBSNews last night and after seeing this version, I can't believe they left out the punchiest line of the whole thing: "It's not DNA." This is so loaded with implication about how this thing has been so overblown and overcomplicated.

Also, it is clearer than ever that Matt Walsh is a pathological liar. Even after his claims have been exposed, he continues to inflate his resume. That he claims to have helped the coaches plan for the Superbowl is just laughable. Liars like this are like mercury; every time you catch them in a lie they reform it and tell it again with slightly different wording and context.

Pathetic, but also destructive.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

I realize that the media which hates the Patriots will only show the least flattering parts of the interview.
They'll show Walsh followed by Belichick saying 'I made a mistake'.
They won't show belichick's entire response to many points that discredit Walsh.

But at least it's on youtube.
People will see the whole thing.
They'll hear his response to the ridiculous idea that the Patriots went to great lengths to conceal what they were doing.
They'll see Belichick speaking to obvious points of everything being in clear view of 70,000 people.
"It's not DNA!". They'll hear the most important reason Walsh got fired.
Best of all, Specter will have to watch the entire thing.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

I *heart* Bill Belichick. I think that says it all.

Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

Yes, please send it to him. And include the line about how he's taking a page from Tomase in forgetting to check his facts.

And let us know any response!

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

You know, if the league wanted the bylaws to be clear, they should have put in a few simple words.

"in the playing of any game, whether a present day game or a future game,...."

It's that simple. It's written to be exploited. BB was only doing what many, many shrewd people have done before him and continue to do to this day....make the rules work for you.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

Somehow this has to be re-aired by a major media outlet.

Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

Florio can be such a moron. Walsh DID say in his NYT interview he was involved in game planning. Check this part:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/16/sports/football/16nfl.html?pagewanted=4&_r=1&ref=football

Its a ridiculous suggestion by Walsh and what Belichick was referring to. That and other suggestions by Walsh he was involved in game planning. And Walsh goes on to say me and Steve stayed behind until Tuesday "with all the OTHER assistant coaches." First of all, he is talking about Steve Scarnecchia, who was a video assistant like Walsh. Yet apparently, in Walsh's delusional mind, he was an assistant coach.....i.e. his reference to "all the OTHER assistant coaches" as if he is one himself. This is clearly delusional and twisted. He was a video assistant. Low level. So was Steve. He wasn't an assistant coach.

When Matt Walsh talks about assisting with the game plan, he is probably referring to attaching stills of opposing formations to the report as illustrations. He probably phrased it like he did because it makes him sound smarter and significantly more involved, like what JDSal45 noted above.

Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

I would put it in the comments section but I don't have an account there and am too lazy to make one, but BB was trying to address the notion of Walsh's impact on viewing the walkthrough. That is why he was talking about his football knowledge. The point was who cares if he was watching the walkthrough. It might as well have been the secretary.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

I thought Armen did a decent job of questioning. I think it's important that BB made clear that videotaping was a convenient method, not some way to specially "decode" the signals. I thought BB was going to burst out laughing when he was saying that people do it with pen and paper all the time, that the information is available to everyone. And that it's signals, not DNA. *snerk* I love BB. And that's the crux here. What a massive mess this turned into because of a complete misunderstanding of the game of football. Thanks, Roger Goodell. Btw, you SUCK at life.

Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

You have to wonder, did Florio base his story on the CBS broadcast, or the whole interview on YouTube, I'd be surprised if it was on the whole interview.

Send him the full interview link too.

Re: Belichick interview with Armen Keteyian on CBS News tonight

Belichek didn't handle that interview very well at all. His characterizations of Walsh's statements were many times wrong - Walsh never said he was involved in game planning, just that he gave them information. Belichek again came off very arrogant and unrepentant. He should have apologized, accepted balme and moved on. He got caught cheating and there is no doubt about that, and Belichek still tries to say he didn't know it was cheating, even after being warned, in print, by the NFL not to do exactly what they got caught doing. I love the Patriots and will always root for them, but my respect for Belichek has completely waned as he is as unrepentant as Pacman or Chris Henry.

Your respect is a great loss to BB, I'm sure.

Sorry, but Walsh HAS said he was involved in game planning.

From NYTimes:

Q. The week before the 2002 Super Bowl against the Rams — walk me through the week.

A. Me and Steve didn’t get down until Tuesday, with all the other assistant coaches. Bill and the other players went down Monday, because they had to be there for media day on Tuesday. Since it was a short week because of 9/11, we stayed behind until Tuesday with the coaches, helping them prepare the game plan.

Bolding mine.

Can you read? If so, do it.

Re: PFT is perplexed at BB's interview

While you're at it, ask the New York Times why they choose to say that douchebag "obtained the tapes while employed by the Patriots" instead of just calling a spade a spade and saying he stole them.

It's all agenda, all spin boys.

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

I for one, think its crazy that its gotten this far...Belichick has an IQ of like 180, and if he dresses up his video dude in patriots gear and sends him out to do his thing, and people think he's trying to be sneaky about it or "Spy" thats retarted. I know Im a lilttle bias because IM the biggest patriots fan ever (dont argue, I am, ok, I just am) but I beilive BB 100% when he said he misinterpeted the rules.

Everyone makes a typo error now and then, but would it be too much to ask for you to at least spell the coach's name correctly?

Re: BB interview - 15 min version

Thanks for posting this!

Like many Patsfans, I was not happy with the show last night wondering why it was abrupt and not that smooth. Seeing the full clip on this thread makes me feel a lot better.

(how can CBS cut off his reply about the reasons (plural) for Walsh's firing, especially the secret taping??)

Unfortunately, given the laziness of most of the columnists covering the Pats, many are going to go by last night's telecast and possibly ignore this full clip. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if people pounce on BB's comment about taping probably more than 50% of the games.

Re: Belichick interview with Armen Keteyian on CBS News tonight

Actually, in the Walsh interview on Real Sports it sounded more like he was being "debriefed" by Daboll than actually trying to instruct him on anything (i.e., Walsh said Daboll was diagramming things for him and trying to get him to recognize what the Rams were doing with respect to TE formations).

I also saw the Keteyian interview and had the same view as Jan Brady--that he came across as arrogant and unrepentant--but then again, I'm a Bills fan. His sole purpose seemed to be to try to tear down Walsh and that doesn't always play well. Then again, as with all media things, it could all be in the editing. Not sure why he agreed to do that interview, however, if it might boomerang back on him, as it appeared to do even with some Pats fans.

On a slightly different subject, did anyone here catch the Real Sports interview of Walsh? I'm a bit surprised none of the major news outlets have picked up on the fact that HBO stated that a "former Patriots offensive start" who played on that 2000 team backed up Walsh--i.e., he knew about the taping and that it was very helpful and effective. My guess is that it's Antowain Smith, but I could be wrong. I expect that the mediots will eventually glom on to that, but I'm surprised it's taken this long.....
