The league was overall a bit more run-heavy back then than it is today, so scoring was probably down overall also.
Quick research, thanks to
Football Statistics and History | The Football Database, shows that during
the years 2001 - 2006:
Year - AFC rank - NFL rank
01…….3rd/23.2 ppg……..6th
02……5th/23.8……………10th
03……6th/21.75…………..12th
04……4th/27.3……………..4th
05……7th/23.7……………10th
06……3rd/24.0…………….7th
So points were indeed harder to come by during those seasons, but that was the case throughout the league anyway. And the Pats still scored more points than over half of the league did in each of those seasons, and in 3/6 of those seasons a lot more than over half of the league.
My contention, that this is one of the worst, if not the worst, OLs and RB groups, and the most fragile
WR groups in the league, still stands.
