Patriots sign WR Chris Hogan

I think a lot of people are ignoring the $10m+ increase in the cap when doing their value calculations.

I believe a lot of posters what to compare the contract to contracts that were signed 2-3 years ago when the cap was almost 25% less, and far fewer teams had an abundance of cap space. 3 years ago if a team was 15 mill under the cap at the start of FA they were hunting for bear, now 1/2 the teams in the league start with almost double that.

Agreed. The prerequisite it seems is the 3-cone needs to come in under ~6.8. If you are above that your resume goes in the circular file.

Except apparently for Welkah, who had a 7.06.

I agree....primarily because I have hardly heard his name brought up much...he is like Keshawn Martin....a second rate prospect....maybe Bill will get something out of the guy but sure seems like we overpaid

Of course he is a 2nd rate prospect. You want a guy like Marvin Jones a 1A prospect (not a guy that has had success over a period of time) you pay double that. Endleman and Amendola are both 30 and a rode hard and put away wet 30. While the pats have not have much luck drafting #1 WO, that is the place to try and get them, not FA

I don't think we're done at WR just yet either. Each of the following has a knock on him that might drop their value down a bit more in our price range:

1) Rod Tidwell- Small and some character concerns with teammates
2) Featherstone- Very, very suspect hands
3) Charlie Tweeter- Alcohol and several run ins with the cops
4) Clifford Franklin- Uses stickum and toughness questions
5) Deacon Moss (most talented)- Prison and prefers basketball

Thoughts??

I feel we are not done yet. maybe sign a vet like Boldin or jones to round out the receiver corp. you can never have too many

It's regrettable that they signed Sanders to such a low offer sheet. 2.5 million for one year (the Steelers had 2 million in cap space). I forgot what the Patriots' cap situation was when they signed Sanders to that offer sheet in April, but couldn't they have bumped the number of years and the dollar amount up a bit? Or were they a bit unsure about committing the years/money amount and the 3rd round pick that would've went to the Steelers had they declined to match?
Hindsight 20/20 of course it's unfortunate they didn't, even $3m per on a 2 or 3 year deal might have done it. The idea that they could have had Sanders for like 4/15 is insane and ****ty from where we stand now, but in April 2013:
1) if you looked at Sanders at the time that would've been high for the market - Antonio Brown got a deal for $8m/yr, now it's Marvin Jones getting that
2) they were still expecting Hernandez to be a big part of the offense

Perhaps that situation has informed the present one to not **** around with the offer sheet if they are sure they want the guy

The problem with this signing is who is the #2 WR? Amendola or Hogan or Martin? I feel like he added a body but IDK if he fits the bill for a #2. Hope so.

We are likely done in the WR market for FA with this move so i hope he can be a #2 cause I don't trust Amendola or Martin to be.
Hmmmm .... Who is number 2?

Great play here. He comes back for the ball, goes up to get it, and boxes out Rhodes with his frame without extending his arms or really committing any sort of OPI that I can see... And it was with like 15 second left in the game needing a TD to win too. Too bad Orton couldn't have thrown the damn ball 1 yard further, would've been a game winner.

Note: "comes back for ball", "goes up to get", and "boxes out" are all things we desperately need in a WR.

Tom Brady would be proud:

Interesting. Would have thought that he did a lot better.

I guess that they made an exception.:D

NESN’s Doug Kyed considers Chris Hogan a candidate to play outside in the Patriots’ scheme.

Hogan saw X-receiver snaps when Sammy Watkins went down last year. The Patriots reportedly don’t view him as a slot-only option. Hogan (6’1/220) has the size to play outside, but could also make Danny Amendola expendable. New England can save $4.1 million from Amendola’s release.

By cutting Amendola, who led the team WR in catches last year, the Pats gain roughly $3M in cap space. What then do they do with that money to upgrade the position and fill in for those catches?
Given how little that number is, doesn't it make more sense to keep him around and have some depth to the position?

Sorry if I missed this, but when in the year does the roster bonus kick in for Hogan (and presumably everyone else with a similar bonus)?

I'd really like to get Anquan Boldin, even if 1-year. He is desperate to get to the super bowl, so he will not break the bank. He is very good at jump balls.
