OT: Cam Newton & the race card

Really?? A spike in the end zone is the same thing as a minute long look-at-me dance routine??
It's OK to call guys out for being self promoting divas and Fig is a self promoting diva.
How about Gronks soldier impression? My point is let them do there thing. If they worked to get in the end zone let them have there moment, people make a big deal because it's Cam. Kelce of KC can hit the quan and it's cool though lol. Clear double standards I say.

Thanks for a thoughtful, useful, informed post.

In terms of race, 400 years of slavery, followed by 150 years of institutionalized oppression, followed by a few decades where we are just beginning to address the issue (at the personal, institutional, and cultural levels) and where it is just now becoming safe for white folks to acknowledge the bigotry in our socialization, and all of this makes sense.

Regarding Obama, I've spent about 45 minutes with him, with a few other people without any particular agenda, and he is one of the most amazing humans I've ever met. The role he played in moving the ball forward in terms of race, and the personal price he paid for it, was a great contribution and sacrifice.

It's a crutch often used to excuse or avoid admitting one's shortcomings. Japan was nuked to the Stone Age and suffered massive civilian losses and economic setbacks as a result. Instead of blaming Americans for those setbacks, they strove to be better and got over it without using that as an excuse. Now they're one of the more powerful and prosperous countries in the world. We will all admit slavery was a terrible thing, but it's over and has been for some time and nobody living on this Earth currently was personally affected by it. A black man is now holding the most powerful office in the world. Does bigotry still exist? Sure. But all races get it. That comes with the territory of being human.

Tom Brady is hated. Hated nationally. Hated because he wins. Hated because he is the pretty boy with the model wife.
Cam Newton isn't hated. Not even close.
This whole topic is media manufactured nonsense.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight; its not a contest people hate Cam and Brady.

We're at a point in US history where many people's dislike of a public figure can be AMPLIFIED due to prejudice. However, a thankfully smaller fraction of the population dislikes people who, if they were of a different race or sex or whatever, they'd outright like.

In politics, for example, there are lots of reasons in this divided country for people to dislike Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. But the venomous hatred directed at them far exceeds what's been shown for any white male politician of similar leanings.

I'm not discounting racism because I've seen it but it isn't rampant or the criticisms of Barack Obama do not "far exceed" that of a white guy. IMO

Barack Obama, who I unfortunately voted for, received 43% of the white vote which is remarkably consistent when compared to previous elections in which the Democratic candidates were white.

Kerry - 41%
Gore - 42%
Clinton - 44%
Carter - 36%

Cam likes being in the limelight which is fine and he is doing good things with his fame on and off the field. His critics are those who don't like loud, "look at me I'm Superman" type guys.

Are there those who don't like Cam because he is black? Sure but it isn't rampant. IMO

This is so goddamn stupid. If he wants to preen for the camera, pretend he's Superman and antagonize the other team then he should be man enough to accept criticism instead of hiding behind race. He should be above any criticism for anything because he's black? People who think this is racism have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

maybe you shouldnt talk about things you dont understand. How are those things comparable? Black people should get over bigotry and institutional racism because japan got two atom bombs dropped on it? Maybe that should be the response to all the whiners about this season on this forum too "You should get over the Patriots bad O-line play because japan had a pair of atom bombs dropped on it back in 45." If Japan can rebuild itself after having a pair of nukes dropped on it then Belichick should be able to draft a quality wide receiver.

The application of the label of racism to cases where it is clearly not is a serious problem. Sure, it's not as serious as racism itself, but the rampant misapplication of the racism label is certainly ******ing our ability to overcome it. In other words, your current viewpoint and actions are part of the problem.

Agreed. Trolling Pats Fans dot com is nearly as bad as racism.

Like the post but the effects of the slave era are still prevalent to this day. Slavery to Segregation to Segregation de facto ...etc.

Bush gave huge tax cuts to the wealthy that we couldn't afford and started the Iraq war. Then at the end of his term, botched the Katrina relief efforts, and he presided over the greatest financial collapse since the great depression....WTF man? He deserves that scorn...lets not forget that after 9/11 Bush also had some of the highest favorability ratings ever for a president...he squandered it all.

Yes, and I can point to other actions by Obama and Hillary that other people will say are disastrous, why is criticism of the black guy automatically racist?

Hit the quan?

Gronk did the soldier impression ONCE, Can does his schtick all the time, so you're not comparing apples to apples?

Also, did people criticize Manziel for his "money" bit? Are they only doing so because they don't know he's white?

Racists in denial...Dislike his policies if you want, but you cannot see what you don't wish to see.

Ok, exactly how can someone go about hating Obama and not be racist? Please, tell me.

Obama is an American. Just because he has the same skin color as other people doesn't give him some special power over the group of people that also have the same skin color. What about skin color gives people these special powers?

What he did was bring out the haters....which is good. Because the first thing you have to do when you have a problem is to acknowledge that problem. We were in deep denial, but folks are starting to wake up and see....the statistics tell the true story of racism in this country, if you care to look.

I completely disagree.

Provide links to the statistics you are referring to please.

It is interesting to me that the majority of slaves transported across the Atlantic Ocean did not wind up in the American Colonies or the U.S. The number one destination was Brazil.

Atlantic slave trade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Code:
Distribution of slaves (1519–1867)[95]
Destination Percentage
Portuguese America 38.5%
British America 18.4%
(minus North America)
Spanish Empire 17.5%
French Americas 13.6%
British North America 6.45%
English Americas 3.25%
Dutch West Indies 2.0%
Danish West Indies 0.3%

I don't know enough about race relations in Brazil, but a cursory glance at some stats shows me that they the racial makeup is a little more balanced (maybe because Brazil did not have as much European immigration as the U.S. post-slavery: they prohibited immigration by anyone who wasn't Portuguese) Brazil also did not abolish slavery until 1888. So Brazil might be a good place to look for common threads or differences to understand the impact of slavery on race relations.

Interesting that the majority of slaves in British America were white in the 1600's.

It's not ridiculous at all. Hate does not erase nor does it rid the world of hate. Dr. King tried to set that example himself and got killed for it. The Japanese are just one such example of a nation and people that was brought to it's lowest point, grew from it, got over it, and prospered to this day. African Americans haveN'T gotten to the point they're at by using the past as a crutch to blame their problems on. They've gotten to the point they're at by leaving it in history and working hard to better themselves and their situations. So if you're going to disagree with me, feel free to do so. But please point out which specific part of this post you disagree with and we can continue the discourse from there.

Me providing you the answers does nothing to sway your opinion. Only when you search for unbiased information yourself will it be possible. If you do not care enough to look yourself, then what is the point of me doing the work for you?

The information is easy as a quick google search....but, remain in denial...it will make you feel better about yourself.

Please point to the disastrous actions that rise to the same level as the unfunded tax cuts, Iraq war, financial collapse, and Katrina response.

Ok, exactly how can someone go about hating Obama and not be racist? Please, tell me.

It is quite simple to outline your rationale for why you disagree with his policies.

Yes, and some people do that and others just voice mindless hate, and that's true of people on both sides of the isle.

You're trying to make the case that all hatred of Obama is racist, which is garbage.
