A source tells Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio that NFL owners are at different ends of the spectrum on Deflategate. Some owners are sick and tired of the story and want it to be over with before it casts a dark cloud over the regular season. But others want the NFL to keep fighting, not to hurt Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, but to keep the power in the hands of the league office and not the players.

Translation: Some owners don't really care about the integrity of their commissioner.
really not surprising though. these billionaires have spent their years acquiring more money, power, and status. it's believable that they want to have power over the nflpa

Jets, Colts, Ravens & Steelers want it to keep going then...

That's why, as much as I hate to say this, Goodell's job is not in jeopardy, no matter the outcome of this case. It would take a 3/4th supermajority to fire him, and I just don't see any chance that happens. :(

I think there's also an in-between position on the owners' part -- they know they have to give up some disciplinary control no later than the next CBA, but they plan to go out kicking and screaming and dragging their fingernails about that, so as to get the most financial concessions in return.

If the owners want to keep their power, surely the worst thing they can do is to let that power be seen to be being abused by the Commissioner. The more that comes out, the more obvious it is that that's what's going on.

For what?

"Well we think he still did something small but ...we can't quite put our fingers on it, so lets fine him because!"

That thought process really needs to die. Until there is evidence of wrong doing why should he accept anything for a crime (that didn't happen and has been proven countless times) that he didn't commit?

Right. I understand that a fine - to Brady is enough of a concession to him to make but it does bother me that he is found formally violating anything just to make this thing go away. It's crazy.

Rozelle and Tagliabue both had the same power and the NFLPA never challenged it. If the Maras and Rooneys of the world want to fight to maintain the commissioner's power, tell Goodell to stop abusing it or get rid of him. The problem isn't the CBA, it is Goodell.

What the owners should do is fire Goodell, apologize, return the picks and promise to install a commissioner with a moral compass. It's the only shot they have of maintaining the power of the commissioner to punish conduct detrimental. But they won't, so in the next CBA that power will never be agreed to.

They've already lost power, not just in the next CBA but through a series of ridiculous cases they've brought to court and lost.

Goodell f***ed them already, they're just too stupid to realize it.

like bob said above, its very clear that Roger has abused his power, the owners if they want to hold on to it need to show that the commisioner can and should have that power, and if he ever abuses it, we will step in and replace him

Just posted this in another thread but it's relevant here too. Is it just me or does the second tweet seem to be Mara distancing himself (and the other owners) from Goodell? Looks like he is hanging Roger out to dry (not that I have anything against that).

John Mara on @WFAN660 on DeflateGate: "I just want it to be over with one way or the other. We're all tired of hearing about it."

John Mara said it's not accurate that owners have put pressure on Roger Goodell to "hold the fort" on the Brady suspension (@WFAN660).
