Sign the Beast LXIX: La'el Collins - do the Pats have a shot if he is cleared?

Signing Collins will have very little cap impact on the Cowbpys. Signing Collins is a great value for any team. Signing Collins will improve any team's depth.

Correct me if I'm wrong Miguel, Collins wouldn't have any impact on a teams cap at this stage because he wouldn't earn enough to count with the rule of 51? If he is still on the roster when it is cut down to 53 he would likely save a team money because he would be replacing a higher priced player on the roster (without accounting for any dead cap the person he is replacing would create).

Btw, thanks for all the information on this stuff, you are once again the best source of cap info on the internet!

Exactly!!!!

Signed with the Cowboys

No one has to ever guess about Jerry Jones' appetite for risky players. Not saying I didn't want the Patriots to pursue him, or that Collins or Gregory (or Dez) will necessarily blow up in JJ's face, but he's certainly more willing to walk that line than other owners.

Cowboys are going to have a ridiculous OL. Wouldn't have minded the Pats taking a 5th-7th round flyer on him instead of a long snapper who won't be available for the next 2 years, but oh well. 31 other teams passed on him too, can't really beat the Pats up over it.

How is Collins a risky player? He's been cleared in the investigation, and prior to that he was generally regarded as having no character concerns at all.

That Cowboys line could end up being as good as the one in the era of the triplets.

Too bad the Pats couldn't have signed him.

It would have been justice for the Pats stolen 1st rounder or the ones the league failed to award us for Tampergate or Deflategate.

I pretty much 100% agree with your point, except that no NFL team drafted him. Therefore there was some risk associated with him, whether it was real, imagined, or just a lack of information to make that determination. And, yes I understand the comments he made about not signing if drafted after the 3rd round potentially being a reason for some team to not take a 7th round flier on him.

He was a risky player before the investigation cleared him, which is why he wasn't drafted. Now that he's been cleared, there's not really any risk left.

I was hoping we might get him ...

Reality kind of showed me that the Patriots went with some real safe picks this draft ... (character safe).

Oh well ...... I'm on to mini camp.

Really wish we could have gotten him, wonder if he can break the starting line up and beat out Leary. If that Offensive Line is better than last year, they really will be scary
