I have to admit when I first saw the headline my brain registered 'Dwight Freeny', and I couldn't understand why there were not five threads on the transaction already.

The Patriots have signed free agent linebacker Jonathan Freeny, according to the league transaction wire.

The 6-foot-2, 254-pounder out of Rutgers has played three years in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. He’s accumulated 42 tackles over the course of his professional career, including 15 last season. A distant relative of former Indy pass rusher Dwight Freeney, the 25-year-old is expected to add depth at linebacker and potentially work on special teams.

Is our base going to 3-4 again???

Kind of makes sense ... Collins - Hightower - and Mayo as leaders that is serious beast mode.

Something interesting is that Freeny's 10 yard split was 1.57.. That's pretty good.. He was a DE/OLB at Rutger, though he's on the shorter side of what the Pats like at OLB.. It will be interesting to see if he sticks and takes Casillas' place..

So he's a distant relative but their last names are spelled differently?

Why couldn't BB fall in love with players from a good school?

This is getting ridiculous who's next? Ray Rice

Who?

Looks like a body to compete in training camp

No kidding. If the eagles are the Philadelphia Ducks, then the pats are the New England Scarlet Knights...

I get it. Tony Soprano is the GM of the New England Patriots!

10 ST tackles in 12 games last season. That's where he's going to have to earn his spot.

Agreed, his competition is probably for Chris White's role rather than anything on the defense

Going to a 3-4 base makes little sense, It'd limit 2 of our best defensive players, Nink and Jones, as either could play OLB but neither are 3-4 DE's.

We'll be a 4 DL team in just about every formation where Mayo/HT/Collins split reps, and no disrespect to Mayo, but after the past 2 seasons I hope he's the relief for Collins/HT and not the other way around.

Our base defense is 4 DL, X LB, X DB. There is no more 4-3 or 3-4 in the NFL, it's all sub.
