Most people agree this off season is mostly about keeping the guys the Pats already have. However every year we see some movement in FA and I am sure we will add a few.

Here is a list of guys I am interested in.

Eddie Royal - WR (especially if Amendola walks)
Hakeem Nicks - WR (see above)
Clint Boling - G (instead of Connolly maybe)
James Carpenter - G
Eric Berry - S (Harmon/Wilson don't inspire confidence as backups. This guy could he a bargain if he turns out to be healthy)
John Abraham - OLB/DE (If they can't resign Ayers & Casillas this 37 yr old could have 1 decent year left. A concussion knocked him out last year but in 2013 he had 11.5 sacks)
Osu Umenyiora - OLB/DE (same as above. Older at 33 but worth a look and would be cheap)

Obviously these are not all ideal but I think some names to keep in mind as interesting.

I would take Nicks and Abraham from that list.

Your list should help us understand why it is important to re-sign who we have. The consensus seems to be that Ayers and Vereen will find more money elsewhere. IMHO, all the rest should be re-signed if we can, along with an Amendola reduction in pay.

If we lose anyone in addition to Ayers and Vereen, then we would indeed to start looking at lists.

the last thing this team needs are journeymen wide receivers like nicks and royal.

Draft O and D line, if there is a stud receiver bring them in. Amendola hopefully takes a paycut, Dobson hopefully comes back healthy and does okay.

resign our defensive pieces.

This is a young team, capable of winning the title with the pieces we have right now, no need to overthink.

Eddie Royal - WR (especially if Amendola walks) - Nah. I don't see how this adds anything. Why not just keep Amendola?
Hakeem Nicks - WR (see above) - Damaged Goods.
Clint Boling - G (instead of Connolly maybe) - BB tends to look for OLine in the draft.
James Carpenter - G - BB tends to look for OLine in the draft.
Eric Berry - S (Harmon/Wilson don't inspire confidence as backups. This guy could he a bargain if he turns out to be healthy) - Harmon had a game winning INT against the Ravens, and Chung performed well this past year.
John Abraham - OLB/DE (If they can't resign Ayers & Casillas this 37 yr old could have 1 decent year left. A concussion knocked him out last year but in 2013 he had 11.5 sacks) - No way in hell. He's done.
Osu Umenyiora - OLB/DE (same as above. Older at 33 but worth a look and would be cheap) - Washed up.

No, this year because they'll be cheap. The reality is the Pats will only be shopping in the bargain bin in FA this year.

Pretty much this. I could list more exciting players but I am more looking at guys to fill the back end of our roster they they will either not be that good or old or some kind of red flag.

I am assuming we don't have the money to sign an impact FA but maybe a few role guys.

Henry Melton anyone?

Not unless they cut Wilfork out right. No way they can afford him otherwise. Even coming off an injury he is still young enough to cost you 4m IMHO.

they also aren't very good, Abraham didnt play because of his large number of brain injuries and Nicks hasn't been good since 2011.

Royal/Nicks - What if we can't keep Amendola? What is your plan then? Someone better be nice but it cost a lot more.

Boiling/Carpenter - Usually yes the draft is better. However who is his backup? Another drafted player? Flemming/Cannon/Kline? Also what if the pick bust or takes a year to develop? Getting a draft pick without a vet who can come in and start if need be seems too risky to me.

Berry - Chung is a starter and has played well in his roll. This is about the 3rd guy. Harmon made a nice play in the Baltimore game but almost blew it on the superbowl by jumping over Kearse instead of batting the bouncing ball away allowing that last minute goal line possession. Also his play all year has been fairly meh besides that one good read against Baltimore. Could be wrong though.

Ambraham/Umenyiora - Well then what do we do if Ayers walks? Depend on Moore/Buchanan to get it done? Draft pick? I would want a vet here but edge players are expensive. Who would you like that is better and cheap?

If you don't like the players I named that is fine. I do not believe they are must haves or anything. But name a guy you want over them that the Pats can afford or name a more expensive guy and how we can afford him? On the other hand if you want to just depend on draft picks to fill these spots that is rather risky.

Why would the chiefs let Eric Berry go if he's healthy? The guy was a top 5/10 safety.

Well I am assuming he might not be at the start of the league year. Who knows. Just thought he's an interesting case. Either way I hope he gets healthy of course.

You think that the LG is a very risky position with a top draftee, Connolly, Cannon and Kline as options?
Wendell is even a possibility if Fleming is good enough to start at RG. To be fair, I think that you are really suggesting that there are inexpensive upgrades over Connolly available in free agency. I tend to disagree. I do agree that we need a veteran; my choice is Connolly.

Oh my picks were assuming Connolly is not signed by us. If we keep Connolly and draft someone I am fine with that.

Personally I am with you and want to keep Connolly cause he is familar with the system so has no question marks about how he will fit in. I am not looking to upgrade him on the cheap cause I don't think we can.

I am not for upgrading him in FA period in general with a superior player cause of the cost factor as well cause it introduces uncertainty.

In the past we have only signed free agents that we know pretty well. It always seems to be from a team we played the previous season or a player that has a connection to the coaching staff in some way.

LaFell - we played Carolina
Revis- preseason work out with the Bucs
Dola - McDaniels coached him

With that in mind, I do think it will be one of the Detroit FA tackles not named Suh. The Packers usually keep their players and I can't think of a notable Viking or Bear player.

Extending Revis, resigning McCourty and Ghost would be a great offseason already.
