Because speed demons Slater and Chung are game breakers???????

What do Slater and Chung have to do with Coderalle Patterson or Aaron Dobson?

Since this thread has turned into a Patterson thread, let me go in another direction. As a Cowboy's fan, what is the general consensus of fans on Jerry Jones?

I've never met the guy, but my wife's family has a modest place that overlooks one of his summer houses. Several of my wife's family have met him years (10-15) ago, they said he was friendly, engaging, and charming. The kids used to spend a lot of time up there and have a slight partying reputation, but that may have been gossip, they pretty much kept to themselves and never bothered anyone (a deputy sheriff often was on site to shoo away anyone who got too close to the house). In recent years I think it is the wife and grandkids that mostly stay there, I guess the kids are into the family business now.

To be clear: I don't think he is much of a general manager. However, clearly he is a very smart guy and an absolutely brilliant businessman (if you don't believe me, look up: http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2014/08/20/the-nfls-most-valuable-teams/).

If I was a NFL owner, I'm 99% sure that I would follow Bob Kraft's lead and hire smart people and not interfere. However, 1% of me remembers years ago before I went into academia and I managed a small group of researchers. My boss and I busted our butt to bring in a research contract that looked like lots of fun, involving travel to an interesting place, several weeks of work at an interesting national lab. We were looking for some underling to train to do the job, and we looked at each other and said: "Why should we bust our butt only to have someone else have all of the fun?", and we went ourselves.

I guess there is a small part of me that understands a guy who busted his butt and now "doesn't want someone else to have all of the fun". ;)

How do you and other Cowboy fans view him?
Wow, I'm really impressed with your fair and spot on impressions of Jones.

I actually agree with everything you're saying. I've met him at a couple of different events and he is just like you described- very genuinely friendly, engaging and charming with fans. He goes out of his way to be good to the fans. Every story I've ever heard from fans has always been the same.

And the players adore him. He's a father figure to some, and he's incredibly loyal to them. I think he gets emotionally attached sometimes.

And therein lies the problem. As a person, he's a actually great guy. But he's the biggest Cowboys fan there is and he makes decisions with his heart. And that hurts us a lot. You're right, he's an insanely smart man, but his love of his Cowboys and the coaches and players sometimes clouds his judgment.

He'd be a great guy to hang out with, he would be fun, friendly and he would buy beers for everyone. And if you needed a cab ride home, he would say no way and make his limo driver take you home. But as far as being a General Manager, I wish he would give up that gig.

Really interesting! I lot of the mediots attribute his mistakes to arrogance, but your take on how he just loves his team so much that he leads with his heart sounds more accurate. Thanks for the post.

Absolutely! Happy to talk anything Cowboys related. I appreciate your fair and intelligent opinion on it instead of being like most of the general public who believes everything the mediots tell them.

Want to see him out there SUnday

I think the last couple years Tyron Smith are a great example of everything that Jerry Jones does right. They went above and beyond to help Smith in his personal life, and he appreciated the hell out of it. He clearly adores the franchise--and Jones in particular--to the point that he left significant money on the table for a long term extension so that he could stay with the team.

He may be a bad GM, but I agree that Jones clearly cares about his players (and I would assume his fans as well). Seems like a good guy.

McCourty vs Dez was a silly discussion then, and it's a silly discussion now.

I don't remember bringing up the discussion of Bryant vs McCourty...

I am speaking to the OP, who is a Cowboys fan and commented on our WR--Aaron Dobson. It was a tongue in cheek type of comment, so I in turn commented on HIS team's wide receiver.

DAL's biggest problem these past years is Romo IMO. He's that gambling gunslinger type of QB that Brady has proven is exactly NOT the type of QB you need to win games in today's NFL.

I actually think that DAL's biggest problem is its ownership and coaching. Everything usually starts at the top, and this is a good example of it--at least in my opinion.

I don't see that much of a difference between say...Ben Roethlisbeger and Tony Romo; and Roethlisberger took his team to the SB 3x.

I agree with you that Romo is too much of a gunslinger, but then again isn't Eli Manning? (another 2x SB winner).

I think the thought that Romo is "the" main problem is silly, although I respect your opinion and understand why you think that way. I think they have a lot of more important issues to address before Romo, and one could make an argument that he actually wins as many games for them as he loses. Just my .02 cents, of course.

So what's his progress report for this Sunday?

I want to believe. I'm trying to believe. I still remember how excited I was when we drafted him and I, not knowing who he was for not watching college ball, youtube'd him and saw his fantastic, Moss-like one handed catch for a touchdown.

I want to believe Dobson is going to really become something for us. I really, really do...

I think most of us assume that he'll definitely see reps, Joey. I don't believe that he was on the injury report at any time this week.

I hope Dobson establishes himself as the better player than Patterson, but the truth is he is not the better player right now. Right now as we speak, New England coaches are game planning for Patterson. Minnesota Coaches are not game planning for Dobson.

Brady is 37 years old. He cannot carry this offense anymore. He needs Weapons to be able to help him out when he can't make that perfect throw. So far, no one meets that criteria other than a injured rob gronkowski. Julian Edelman is a good slot WR, but he is not a number 1 WR. No other team in the league would take Edelman as an outside WR. Thompkins is average, Lafell is average, Amendola is average. Dobson is a mystery.

Patterson was a first round pick and he is not a player you game plan against. They game planned against Peterson until he turned into a scumbag. Now they are gameplanning to shutdown Cassel.

Patterson has averaged 25 receiving yards a game his last four games. Why would you game plan for that. The only area they have to worry about with him is when he runs the ball (which he only does 2-3 times a game) and on kick offs. Gostkowski is good at kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone which is how you game plan for him in that area.

Stop overrating Patterson. He isn't a receiver you game plan for. He isn't even the best receiver (in the actual ability to catch the ball and get yards receiving) on his team. Jennings is a bigger threat in the passing game.

First, Brady can carry the offense. He is still an elite QB.

Second, how would Patterson change this? Other than your overflated view of the guy, he has not carried the Vikings' offense. In fact, he was a non-factor on offense other than a handful of games. He has potential, but it hasn't been realized yet. But the same can be Dobson. Dobson has been a better receiver, but Patterson can do multiple things and runs the ball better than he receives it at this point.

Just watch, Dobson will be back with a vengeance tomorrow. I remember his first game where his first catch went for a touchdown. Expect that.

I agree.

Dobson is the receiver we need. its a shame he got injured last year just when he was getting 100% in sync with brady, and then the pats putting him out there too soon cost him his offseason.

a big bodied receiver who can bully defensive backs.
