I don't trust team-listed weights either, but Vellano weighed in at 306 at his college pro day. I think the poster identifying him as 260 lbs. must have been thinking of somebody else.
Yeah 260 is a tad light, but he has been consistently reported around 285, which looks more accurate to my eye:

. He could substitute for Wilfork on 3rd down or against certain teams without being a pushover in the running game. Should help keep Wilfork's snap count down.

Which then the Boston Sports Mediots would kill the Patriots saying that keeping Wilfork's snaps down aren't because of trying to keep him fresh and healthy through the regular season and into the playoffs. It's because "the cheap Patriots" don't want to pay him the $3m he can earn if he plays 70% of the snaps, Pats make it to the divisional round and are a top 10 defense.

That's an obvious dilemma created by VW's contract revision. He gets a major pay hit if he plays more than 60% of the snaps IIRC, and keeping his snap count under 60% is probably what's needed for his health and effectiveness.

We'll just have to cross that bridge whenever we come to it.

Ya here are Vince's incentives for the season
50% Snaps: $500,000
60% Snaps: $1.25 million
70% Snaps: $2 million
70% Snaps + Divisional Playoffs: $2.5 million
70% Snaps + Team Top 10 Defense: $500,000

Sure it is, although I don't think Wilfork was 325 since middle school. I take all listed weights with a hefty grain of salt. Vellano simply doesn't look or play like his listed weight.
Yes but hes not 260.

Tough to tell from TV or at TC but I would agree with the 285 estimate. I remember seeing him next to Mankins at TC and he seemed smaller....

My guess is the next move the Pats make will be cutting Chris Baker to make room for a LB.

They're going to have to. The LB depth is way too thin right now.

Could be, but I don't expect both DTs to stick. This looks like an audition to me: put both of the rookies through their paces and keep the one who impresses more.

Quarles I get. Gaston.... not so much

What I don't get is Chung and Wilson hanging on to their spots at safety. Sure, there will 5 or 6 DB's on the field regularly, but Chung can't cover to save his life, and Wilson ain't exactly glue when it comes to sticking to receivers down the field either. They are core ST'ers, but so was White. If cut neither would get a sniff besides.

My guess is Jones or Silgia is headed for short term IR, or maybe one is headed to permanent IR. If both are out to start the season then these DT pickups make more sense.

Don't even let me think they are looking to trade Big Vince. Brady might cry, me too.

There have been a few decent ILB cuts but none BB is interested in apparently.

This has been me combing the waiver wire for ILBs.

I hope BB is doing the same.

One way Chung and Wilson make sense is if you are going to use them as linebacker hybrids, both are very good at getting off blocks to make plays find the ball carrier and bring him down.
Also rushing the Quaterback if you send Chung and or Wilson at the qb when you have 6 defensive backs on the field this makes some sense.

I'm not one of those people that says everybody we pick up will be an All Pro, but I love Quarles. He was a 2nd to 4th rounder in most MOCKS. He got in a fight at a club, and wasn't drafted. He ended up being cleared of any wrongdoing. Dude has long arms, is strong, and has a motor. Watch the Giants preseason game with the Pats starting at the 1:45 mark. I'm stoked to get this guy!!!!

The Pats had no way to know they would get either. They are quite a ways down in the claiming order after all. I doubt both stick.
