Resurrection of Tavon Wilson

You seem like a good guy and you mean well, but why do these threads always happen to you?
I take the bait. I'm a dumb fish.

I have a group of posters who want to argue anything I say. I feed into the behavior so it persists. I am going to attempt to ignore it more often moving forward.

I don't understand why people are so quick to hate on Wilson. He had a rocky rookie year, big deal.

3 guys in a basement somewhere, i.e....Pro Football Focus.
No...

Posters act as if Harmon had this amazing rookie season. Wilson despite some mistakes was a more productive player in his rookie season than Harmon was in his rookie season. Harmon did not make the mistakes but he also didn't make the impact plays. Either way even if you believe that Harmon is the better player I have a hard time understanding why anyone would see Wilson playing well enough to have posters speak positively about him would be a negative and something posters would take issue with. I think it is great news if Wilson is in fact pushing Harmon for the starting job, that would mean we have 2 viable candidates to start opposite McCourty.

He was not a rookie last year.

Look, I hope Tavon Wislon becomes an All-Pro - - I really do. The reports out of camp are that he has gotten serious this year and prepared himself like a pro and joined the Revis Islanders in Arizona for extra prep. Good on him.

After two weeks of TC and the first preseason game, however, it is ridiculous to write that he is "apparently" ahead of anyone for the Safety job. Anyone who has followed more than 2 or 3 BB/Pats training camps should know better. One preseason game says nothing. Cedric Cobbs and 70 others say hello.

I didn't say apparently I said it appears. It does; the reality is all we have to go on is one preseason game and in that game Wilson played with the first team more than Harmon and played better. So as of today from what I have seen it does appear he is ahead of Harmon on the depth chart. That could be proven wrong in upcoming weeks but I cannot predict the future so I can only post about what I have seen to this point, which is what I have done here.

I hate when people try to shut down opinions like this.

You can make any opinion invalid:

Judge by first preseason game?

"It's the first preseason game."

Second?

It's the second...

Third?

It's just the preseason it doesn't matter

53 man roster cuts?

Doesn't mean he'll actually start

First game?

Relax it's just the first game.

You can go forever with this, including the all powerful "This past player seemed good by all accounts and still got cut. We are not the coaches."

If this attitude was widespread there'd be no point to debating anything at all on a fan forum.

You look at a player's track record and make a pretty good educated guess on how they'll perform when it's for real.

Wilford and Kelly tandem didn't play too well. Does that indicate how they'll play for the season? Their track record says otherwise. They are proven players. Unlike Wilson who is not a proven player. He has sucked so far in his career. Could he improve? Sure he can. Just like Wilfork and Kelly can also start to suck. But based on ONE preseason game, it really is too early to make declarations.

Saying all that, I hope he does improve, become a legit starter and prove himself in the regular season. But until then, understand why people are gonna poke fun at these types of threads.

When they show up to argue this, then you'll really have something.

Oh well THAT is totally a different meaning, then.......
They are different, apparent is readily seen and capable of being easily perceived, appear is to give the impression of something. Thursday’s game gave the appearance that Tavon Wilson was the #1 safety on the depth chart behind McCourty but since it was not the regular season it is not easily perceived and could be inaccurate.

All and all the question remains what others think of the safety competition. That was the intent of this thread, I believe that Wilson is in the lead to be the starter next to McCourty, if you feel differently my OP invited you to express those views. The approach to how I formed my opinion is not really debatable, I could base it on how Wilson sits on the bus if I wanted to, it is a moot point.

I think what you are overlooking is the track record of Harmon and Chung is not any different than the track record of Wilson. Everyone acts like all things are bad with Wilson but he has more interceptions in the past 2 seasons than Harmon and Chung combined. His track record is on par with Harmon and Chung, so when we attempt to use the players track record none of the players are in the lead. What we have to work with is the preseason game and what is seen in camp. In Thursday’s game Wilson played 33 snaps to Harmon’s 17 and Wilson had 8 tackles to Harmon’s 2. As of today it appears WIlson is ahead of Harmon and Chung, that is not debatable, which is why posters are leaning on the “it is too soon to say this” or “what happens in a preseason game does not matter”. That is a falsely, last season Wilson played the second half of the preseason games with the scrubs, this season he is in the opening lineup.

People poke fun at threads like this because they think it makes them the coolest kid on the school bus, poking fun at people in general is childs play, so trying to justify it is immature on your part. Everyone in here verifies being over 18 when they sign up for the board, so nobody should be poking fun at other people like this is the 7th grade. Any adult realizes that making fun of someone is an indication of insecurity or they have a need to feel superior to other, either way it is a sign of considering yourself to be inadequate.

No one is making fun of you.

Everyone has a right to debate an opinion given. It is a forum.

The sooner you drop your paranoia and understand that, the better your experience here will be. This is something Teenuh never could learn. I hope you can and therefore, will have a better and more enjoyable experience on this messageboard. As a Mod who has had to come to your defense on several occasions this year already when folks were getting personal with you, I, for one, am glad you are here.

I never said anyone was making fun of me, I just said that if they made fun of this thread it would be for the reasons I gave. I am not paranoid, I am sometimes defensive, but overall I do enjoy my time on here, I just do not always understand the motivation behind some posters.

I am glad you are here too, I find you to be refreshing and knowledgeable.

I really opened this thread because I wanted to hear what other people thought of the safety competition and how they think it would end. I think Wilson will win the starting job. I would love to hear what other posters think.

Poor Tavon. No matter what he does the Critics who really, REALLY believe they are better judges of football talent the Bill Belichick will never give him a break.

They don't realize nor care that Tavon himself was not responsible for Belichick's decision to draft him. Nor where he did. Except for Belichick's view of his athletic ability and talent while playing. He is a mere pawn in their never ending war with Bill to prove their Manhood and perspicacity.

Bill seems to be a winner in that contest posting the best League record for the last 15 years. It makes their animosity to a potential error by Bill with respect to Tavon's worthiness, even more impossible to bear. So the vitriol to Tavon gushes vehemently.

Truth hurts doesn't it...

The critics of the Defense have latched onto the second Safety as a weak spot since there does not appear to be a Probowl possibility playing there, unlike everywhere else.

But that does not mean that the players competing there are talentless and beneath contempt. There are several candidates, each of whom was a relatively high draft selection, indicating that the position is not manned only by talentless scrubs. Whoever wins he competition, will probably do an adequate job; and likely so would his backup. Unlike before, all the candidates have the requisite size, speed and scouted athletic ability, along with a modicum of football acumen.

I expect a problem of undersized players of 2013 and prior, has been or is being solved even now.

There's plenty to debate that doesn't involve trying to read signs in chicken bones.

(Throws bones on floor) Damn it, now I have to start over..

Aside from Brady6, how did others view Tavon's performance on Thursday?

I did not watch the game, but I did hear that both Chung/Wilson looked like capable NFL safeties--considering it was the 1st game of the preseason.

I suppose it's something that maybe they can build off on, although of course it's much too early to get too excited. As many have pointed out, we'll have a better idea in a couple of weeks.

Didn't really notice much from Tavon (which is a good thing for a Safety). Thought Chung looked quite good against the run (still getting used to seeing him with a different number) and Butler passed every test with flying colors that they threw at him (even the completion he gave up to McCoy was heavily contested and perfectly thrown through an eye of the needle). Logan Ryan looked very bad much of the night and was getting picked on by RGIII and Cousins.
