@KontradictioN could you outline what makes Amendola a better player?

I've already responded to this and then have made multiple posts supporting it. Like I said, a conversation with you on the topic is not a productive one.

And another thread has gone down the Amendola rabbit hole. Time to start being more liberal with the thread ignore, I think.

Agreed. This is getting ridiculous now.

Edelman has also been playing with the GOAT, which means that a higher percentage of his passes have hit him between the numbers while Amendola's have mostly just been in his vicinity.

You must know this is weaksauce. To the tune of 1 more TD.

Your over-reliance on how players perform or have performed during the underwear olympics, in this case one that took place a half decade ago, is a logical flaw. From what I've picked up on, you lean on it when you appear to have trouble convincing yourself of the point you're attempting to make.

This is the gist of the issue, and why a conversation on the topic is not a productive one.

It's not that he could be a better player. It's that he is, when both are healthy. Again, this has been proven over their careers. You're tossing out the "opportunity" argument in Edelman's favor yet, if Edelman was the super star you're making him out to be, he should have had no problem getting reps even with Welker was here. It's not as if the Pats have had '07 caliber receivers every year since 2009. Further, if he was the super star you're making him out to be, why did he generate zero interest on the open market prior to 2013 and very little interest on it afterward?

And yet many have, correctly, made the argument numerous times that Edelman is not a slot receiver. So why would that be a roadblock for him?

I can accept this for 2009. Moss was not Moss in 2010 and was gone after the Dolphins game, so Edelman still had opportunity there.

Shadow of his former self and barely able to get separation after 2010. You're doing more damage to your argument than good pointing him out.

LOL.

Lloyd was a flanker. Edelman still had the opportunity to beat out Branch for reps.

Edelman doesn't play tight end.

This is almost as harmful to your argument as tossing out Chad Johnson was.

I can accept this, though Tate was nothing special.

By Belichick's own admission, that team only had Moss and Welker and Revis was shutting Moss' ass down in that game. Where else was Brady going to throw the ball to?

You are still missing the opportunity point.

Moss
Welker
Branch
Tate
Price
Johnson
Lloyd
Gronkowski
Hernandez

These were all players that Belichick and the Patriots were invested in, whether they performed well is irrelevant because they were still given the opportunity over Edelman who was a college QB learning the WR position.

These are the percent of snaps played by Edelman by the season –

2009 – 16%
2010 – 17%
2011 – 13%
2012 – 23%
2013 – 86%

I'm going to go ahead and stop with the Amendola discussion because this is an exercise in futility at this point. I'm off in 5 minutes and will enjoy my weekend. @Deus Irae was kind enough to set up an Amendola mega thread.

Kontra just spent all that time politely replying to your post which was somewhat nonsensical. Then you have the nerve to ask him this after all that effort he put in?

Wow
Not one thing in his post outlined anything that made Amendola better, he was trying to discredit my statement that the lack of opportunity was the reason Edelman did not do well.

OK, whatever you say

Would you really start Amendola over Edelman?
Our starters are Dobson, Edelman and Amendola in the slot. If Dobson cannot go, we have Thompkins, LaFell or even Boyce.

I expect Amendola and Edelman to start every game in which they are healthy.

You have much more patience in dealing with nonsense than I do.

That is assuming we start with a 3 WR set, in which case I would tend to agree that would be the top 3.

I do not view 3 WRs as our base offense personally. I think McDaniels has shown that he runs more conventional offensive sets. I also think that if you are running the football on early downs LaFell is one of the best blocking WRs in the NFL so he would be a good player to have on the field.

This roster is as good as any at this points. We agree on 50 at this point. We won't get any closer. :)
I have Smith, Chung and Wendell on my 53 at this point].
=====

Let's look at some of your choices.

OFFENSE [Wendell instead of Kline].
1) I hope that you are right and Polo is ready to be our #2.
2) I'm OK with your receivers (WR, TE and RB's). However, I suspect that one of the WR's will be replaced by a TE before the season starts.
3) I'd keep Wendell instead of Kline. Halapio is getting lots of reps at LG. I suspect that he is battling with Kline for a position as a swing OG.

DEFENSE [Smith and Chung instead of Moore (PS) and Browner (suspended)].
1) If we have a 5th DE, I think that it will Smith. I don't think that he will be on PUP.
2) I agree that Armstead is unlikely to be on the 53.
3) I disagree with the choosing Chung as the odd man out. As of now, he would likely have the 53rd roster spot for 4 weeks in your roster. For me, I think that Chung is more valuable than Wilson or Thomas (the draftee).

This is more a prediction than a wish list:

QB - Brady, Mallett, Garoppolo
RB - Vereen, Ridley, White, Bolden, Develin (Houston, Finch to PS)
TE - Gronk, HooMan, DJ Williams (Justin Jones, Asa Watson to PS)
WR - MiniTron, ToughGlass, Boyce, Thompkins, LaFell (Dropson to PUP, Gallon to PS)
OL - Solder, Mankins, Wendy, Connolly, Vollmer, Cannon, Stork, Fleming, Halapio
(Barker, Cave, Klein to PS)
DL - Chandler J, Wilfork, Kelly, Ninko, Fresh Prince, Easley, Siliga, Buchanan, Chris J
(Zach Moore to PS; Forston, Bequette, Armstead - gone)
LB - Mayo, Collins, Hightower, Beauharnais, Anderson
(JaG Davis, Cam Gordon to PS)
CB - Revis, Ryan, Dennard, Arrington, Swanson/Browner (Butler, Hawkins to PS)
S - McCourty, Harmon, Jemea Thomas, Chung, Ebner (Kan Davis to PS)
(the era of the Error Repeater should mercifully end)
STs - Ghost, Allen, Ott, Slater

Lots of room for improvement here. Easily replaceable parts on this 53 include: Bolden, Develin, HooMan, DJ Williams, Thompkins, Wendy, Kelly, Chung, Ebner. I'm still hoping for the signings of RB/FB Brian Leonard, TE Dustin Keller & OLB Quentin Groves, and maybe WR Austin Collie, CB Terrell Thomas &
SS Reid Doughty.
I also wouldn't be surprised if one of Darius Fleming, Josh Hull or Chris White is a 6th LB.

Speaking of Easley I was surprised to see him out there the other day as a full participant in minicamp. Isn't he one of like 6 (drafted) rookies in the whole league who hasn't signed yet?

Players can sign waivers for OTAs and minicamp, at least.

This is the most reasonable position I've seen.

SOME COMMENTS
1) I am not sure that Kline is eligible for Practice Squad, perhaps he is.

2) If Jemea Thomas is on the 53 as of now, he is IMHO a replaceable part. You essentially have him ahead of Chung and Ebner.

3) I don't think that Hooman is in any way replaceable. He was our starter for much of the year. If all goes well, he'll be our #3. I don't think that he is on the bubble.

4) As you indicate, Swanson is looking good to be on the 53, at least for 4 weeks. It seems that Green should go to the Practice Squad if he is eligible.

5) I agree with the hope that we will find more free agents. Much of the signing of vets comes late in camp. I would note that in addition to the positions you mention, we might also pick up a defensive linemen. We have been looking for one, at least as injury insurance.

6) Sadly, Vellano, a starter for some of last year, does not even get a mention.

7) While I agree with 5 LB's at the moment, I agree that a 6 (or even 7) is more likely. LB and S are often the places for special team specialists.

1) Don't know if Klein is eligible either. Reiss should provide a list of PS-eligible Pats sometime
during TC.

2) True, Jemea Thomas could also be considered replaceable, though I still would rather keep him ahead of Ebner & especially Chung, both of whom I have making the final 53 - for now.

3) I agree that HooMan isn't currently on the bubble, though that is more an indictment of the sad
state of our TEs than it is a compliment to HooMan's abilities, meager as they are.

4) Not a fan of Green at all. I'd rather see the Pats cut ties with him completely after TC.

5) It wouldn't shock me to see another DLman signed either.

6) Vellano = TC fodder. I'll puke on my computer if he's on the Opening Day 53.

7) It wouldn't shock me to see a 6th LB on the 53. A 7th, however, begs the question: what
position is sacrificed in order for him to be added?

Connolly or Wendell gone. Arrington or Dennard gone. surprise cb talent will step up. Roy Finch might make team. def superbowl or bust squad on paper!!!!!!!!

Appreciate all the effort made on these projections. The biggest difficulty in doing so, at this point, is that we have very little insight into the quality of special teams play for that bottom 8-12 players on the roster, and that is perhaps even more important than their play in their designated positions.

One of those names does not belong in that post. Can you guess which one it is?

Dennard

BBell has some type of issue issue with Dennard and his hips. Personally, I think he has played very well in his first two season and he might the best CB to come out of the 2012 draft class.
