Having coached youth soccer for about 9 years now, there's some truth to that at the lower ages when parents throw all kinds of crappy kids out there. As a coach it's difficult. However those kids get left behind in the pre-teen years and by the time they're early teens and not far from playing in high school those who aren't coordinated or skilled look ridiculously bad out there.Soccer's a great way for kids and young teens to get/stay in shape. It's especially good for kids who aren't really coordinated enough, big enough or strong enough to play more advanced sports. Like kickball, tag, hide-and-seek and other child games, most Americans grow out of it and move on to adult sports.
Soccer is certainly an advanced sport from the high school level on. It's a lot harder to do things with your feet than with your hands. I like basketball but if there's a non advanced sport, that is it.
