World Cup Thread.

Soccer's a great way for kids and young teens to get/stay in shape. It's especially good for kids who aren't really coordinated enough, big enough or strong enough to play more advanced sports. Like kickball, tag, hide-and-seek and other child games, most Americans grow out of it and move on to adult sports.
Having coached youth soccer for about 9 years now, there's some truth to that at the lower ages when parents throw all kinds of crappy kids out there. As a coach it's difficult. However those kids get left behind in the pre-teen years and by the time they're early teens and not far from playing in high school those who aren't coordinated or skilled look ridiculously bad out there.

Soccer is certainly an advanced sport from the high school level on. It's a lot harder to do things with your feet than with your hands. I like basketball but if there's a non advanced sport, that is it.

I was responding to your "especially good for" line, which you repeated again above and which IMHO is completely untrue.

It's completely true. Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. You don't need to be as coordinated in youth soccer as you do to play baseball, hockey, football, basketball or lacrosse. That's just the reality of the sports. Belichickfan, an obvious soccer fan, acknowledged it in the post just above this one.

Maybe "soccer babies" wouldn't object to your "honest discussion" if your discussion were actually honest and something more than calling soccer training wheels for big boy sports.

Nonsense. You were crying over a post that was completely neutral. That's what the soccer babies do. The more adult soccer fans can handle the critique.

I love American Football but it's a stupid name. Why, exactly, is it called Football ?

Speaking of which, where is "Touchdown" from ? I suspect it's from Rugby in which a "Try" is scored by Touching the Ball Down on the ground in their version of the end zone. There is no Touching Down of anything with a Touchdown.

Nothing against American Football but . . . .

Right, of course. I don't know what I'm talking about because soccer babies. Of course, equating soccer to tag and hide-and-seek is a completely neutral position to take. How could I ever have interpreted otherwise.

Anyway, another productive discussion. We'll leave it at that.

Typically productive discussion. Anyway, we'll agree to disagree.

There is nothing to disagree about beyond your misguided attempt to be soccer's white knight in this thread.

I watched it. I played it. I excelled at it. My post was spot on, and it wasn't an attack at soccer. It's sad that the soccer babies can't handle honest discussion of their game.
excelled? so you've been capped by your country. or just played for a pub team?

Deus, I for one would NOT wish to piss JACK BAUER off!

Youth soccer. As in soccer played during my youth. I've not been a 'youth' for many years, and soccer was not my main sport even as a child. I played other sports at a more advanced level as I grew older. That doesn't mean I wasn't good at youth soccer.

Well ****. Things are not looking good for Portugal (Says he, trying to the let the stupid pro/anti soccer debacle fade)

Pepe is so wild, it never leads to good places. I feel bad for Azorian (Tem mais 2 jogos ainda...)

Works for the U.S. though. Portugal (likely) loss and Pepe out for the game against the U.S. Every little bit helps - have to beat nemesis Ghana though.

Is Materazzi still playing? He could play in NFL

So disappointing..... this game gonna end worse. Germany tactically taking us to the woodshed and bending us over. Pepe, poor goalkeeping and sloppy play just the icing on the cake.

Estados Unidos vai ganhar no domingo.

I remember the good old days when Germany was 0 for 2 in their national sport

Ghana's best athlete:

Debate Ovah! :D

Today's game got a lot more important today. With Portugal being embarrased, losing a player against us to a red card, having some other injuries and Ghana having a couple of their starters not playing, a U.S. win today would set us up well. The way I understand it we'd "only" need to tie Portugal and do better than 4-0 against Germany to advance (assuming Ghana didn't beat Germany or Portugal doesn't CRUSH Ghana for goal differential). Or beat Portugal.

A win tonight sets us up fairly well, it looks more realistic than it did this morning.

This Pepe creep should be disowned by his family:

Not really a soccer guy at all. I love FIFA though, great game. It's the only way I know how its played and who the stars are.

I'm really into watching this world cup just because there is legit nothing else to watch so whatever. I can half-assed watch it so I'm fine.

Soccer can be really boring depending on who the teams are. Like England and Italy was a very good game to watch. Ivory Coast and Japan... yeah not so much.

I'll say I like soccer from now until it ends up once TC starts and its over I wont give two ****s about soccer
