Interesting post over at Boston Sports Media Watch today. In the process of pointing out Mike Silver's rampant hypocricy, Bruce Allen points out this interesting bit from Silver's embed in the Rams' war room:

Mike Silver said:
When the deal was consummated, and the Rams turned in the card for Joyner, Fisher burst into a huge grin, and there were hoots and hollers of excitement. A few minutes later, when the Titans traded out of the 42nd selection — a move viewed in the Rams’ war room as confirmation that Tennessee had targeted Joyner, only to come up empty — there was another surge of congratulatory cheers.

“I don’t know how we did it,” Fisher said afterward, concealing a twinkle in his eye. “I just had a feeling.”

Gregg Rosenthal noticed this immediately:
Gregg Rosenthal said:
A fascinating part of @mikesilver’s story: Sure sounds like Fisher had a Titans mole that led to trade up for Joyner.

And then Bruce's take:
Boston Sports Media Watch said:
A “mole?” So the suggestion is that Fisher has someone in the Titans inner circle – the franchise he coached for 17 years, who is still loyal to him, and gave up this information to the detriment of his own team?

Can you imagine if a former Belichick employee was giving out secrets of his team back to his former boss like this? Where would the outrage meter land? But here, it’s written in an admiring fashion. Silver, has been one in the past to hold no punches when it comes to this stuff, but for “The ‘Stache” its awesome.

could just as easily say that BB had a mole in the seahawks camp because we drafted someone they were about to draft.

Silly, conspiracy theory with no basis other than speculation.
Not to mention Fisher is going to waste his pick just to take the guy Tennessee wanted. He would have taken him no matter who picked next.

After drafting Easley in the first round, rumors are circulating that BB is confident in the DT's knee recovery. How could he be so sure unless he was secretly breaking into morgues in the greater Boston area, stealing ACL's from cadaver's and supplying them via an underground surgical black market? With Hernandez no longer running hits for him (allegedly), who is BB's muscle for this confirmed tendon cartel?

This isn't libel, I'm just asking questions here, SHEEPLE.

I think Bruce Allen does have an interesting, and probably legitimate point in regards to the contrast in how the media is handling this story versus how they would report on this or a similar story if it were about the head coach of the NFL team in Foxboro.

I was curious to see what PFT had to say about it, because they are known as a site that will pull no punches in making accusations, or at least implications about alleged wrongdoing and rumors. Fan bases of all 32 NFL clubs are convinced Florio hates their favorite team, but in this instance let's just compare PFT's analysis and opinion on this matter versus the last one involving the Patriots.

On the Rams-Titans story, PFT's headline was that Jeff Fisher thinks he beat his old team to draft Lamarcus Joyner. By contrast PFT ran not one, but three stories on an alleged leaked scouting report: "New England's Manziel scouting report is leaked'; 'Belichick claims to know nothing about leaked Manziel scouting report'; and 'Patriots, league not talking about Manziel scouting report'.

On the Rams-Titans story, while PFT does ask if the Rams knew something, their conclusion -
does Fisher just figure the Titans were probably high on Joyner because Fisher knows the types of players the Titans like? The Titans may have been upset when they lost out on Joyner. If they lost out on Joyner because someone in their own facility had loose lips, the Titans should be furious.
leads to the implicit conclusion that the Rams and Fisher are absolved of any wrongdoing, and the Titans have nobody but themselves to blame if the allegations are true.

By comparison, on the Pats-Manziel story, even though that report has been almost universally concluded to be a fake, PFT never once even considered that possibility in any of their three columns; in fact the first story has even been silently edited to address that question by stating that "it looks legitimate". PFT's slant and tone causes the vast majority of its readers to assume it is real, which bypasses a very major issue with this news story.

Not only does Florio assume that it is real, but he goes on to chide Belichick and the Patriots in each article with comments such as "the guy who acts like he’s above anything that isn’t what he cares about or knows about. But it’s unfair to the Browns or Manziel for Belichick to be flippant about a topic that possibly represents an effort by someone with the Patriots to smear Manziel by leaking confidential internal documents to the media." and then incredibly concluding that "(i)t’s fair to infer that, in the absence of a statement from Belichick or the team indicating that the scouting report is fake, the scouting report is legitimate. If so, the question become whether the team or the league will investigate how a team’s entire scouting report on a player the team didn’t select managed to make its way to the hands of the media. Belichick should be far more concerned about the situation, both as to the fact that it harms Manziel and as to the possibility that it could happen again in the future."

The contrast in how the two stories are being handled by the same outlet (albeit different writers) is so stark that it is difficult to ignore. That's not to say that there definitely was something going on in St. Louis with a mole in Tennessee - it's about how a well-read media outlet can influence public opinion.

It is what it is.

Yeah, well, I heard that Wes Welker tipped off Belichick that John Fox and John Elway were targeting Jimmy Garoppolo as Manning's heir apparent. And even though Belichick said, "We have a quarterback. Didn't we decide to draft that safety Terrence Brooks from Florida State at 62?", Trader Bill succumbed to peer pressure even though he'd never heard of Garoppolo just to stick it to Elway and Fox. It's so nice to have a mole.

Sorry, I go along with this. This is the big leagues. You need to purge guys like this, otherwise you're just a sucker. Would every coach including BB pump a former loyalist for info? Sure, if they could.

The only difference is, he wouldn't be a smiling dork about it.

Also, we're going to get paranoid news coverage, it's time to get over it I think. I don't think anyone fears the Rams at the moment.

Who is BB's "muscle"? -I just want to know if this was an intentional pun or not. :)

Long ago in a galaxy far away I liked the young 'stated Jeff Fischer as a HC. But almost as long ago I saw the kind of self-serving character he really is. Remember the takeout injury hit on Rodney? His anti-BB stance on the camera placement violation in sharp contrast to Jimmy Johnson et. al.

I'd root for the Lambs as a decent team were he not the HC.

Probably a smart bet.

I once got involved in a land war in Asia and ended up betting against a Scicilian with death on the line.

Such a classic blunder.

But that's so simple? All you have to do is divine what you know of him, is he the type of man who place the poison in his own goblet or is enemy's!

Fischer's crime was not having a mole. It was putting the mole in danger of losing his job.

The story isn't about the mole as much as it is media and public reaction to the conspiracy theory of a mole. It's very much about how liked and successful you are when it comes to how vilified someone will be. The Patriots are forever cheaters, the only team with tainted super bowls. Meanwhile Denver, guilty of much more egregious crimes in the late 90s, is everyone's favorite.

That's the real story here. That even the suggestion of malfeasance on the part of Belichick would result in burning effigies but if a more likable coach cheats he's just being savvy and clever.

I mean Talib had a history of hip injuries, goes down in the AFCCG and stands up holding his hip says some dumb **** on twitter and boom, investigation.

Or a camera
