On offense i believe they will go back to the 2 TE set following the draft/FA

QB: Tom Brady
RB: Vereen
WR: Dobson
WR: POSSIBLE FA/Julian Edelman
TE: Rob Gronkowski
TE: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA
C: DRAFTED PLAYER/Ryan Wendell
LT: Nate Solder
RT: Sebastian Vollmer
LG: Logan Mankins
RG: Dan Connolly

Defense:
LDE: Chandler Jones
DT: Vince Wilfork
DT: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Tommy Kelly
RDE: Rob Ninkovich
LB: Jerod Mayo
LB: Jamie Collins
LB: Donta'a Hightower
CB: Aqib Talib
CB: Alfonzo Dennard
S: Devin McCourty
S: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA

So where i see possible changes would be at WR/TE/C/DT/S.

Guarantees i believe are coming at TE and Safety. Tight end because if they get a compliment to Gronk from the great Tight Ends available in the draft then we are looking at a return to Offensive dominance. At safety for me Gregory has to go and we need to get someone who can compliment McCourty properly. They'll resign Talib because Bill is a huge fan.

Now the doubtful changes come at WR/C/DT. Let's start off with my biggest need and concern, receiver. It's a need because i truly believe they'll need that big, deep threat (Fitzgerald for example has been talked about) to win the SB again, Brady needs some help out there it's plain and simple and i expect Dobson to blossom on the other side. The dilemma is that we need Edelman back again however after watching Slater being the deep threat against Denver can Bill really not afford to dip in FA for a big play receiver?

At Center i think a change is needed because Wendell is not good enough, exposed far too easy and i think with a stud at that position with Vollmer back and some better o-line coaching this season we'll be better off.

Finally D tackle. The reason i say it's not a lock for change is because we never got a full year out of Kelly but we know he compliments Vince really well, his cap hit is not great so if they do decide to part they can go with Armstead/Jones or Siliga to replace or they could go and draft a staple for the future so the position alongside Vince is really up in the air for me.

Again don't scold me because these are my pre draft initial thoughts. On Offense they could easily go 1 TE and 3 WR but like i said my belief is that they go back to Gronk/Hernandez days.

Any of the top guys from the draft at TE and i'll be happy, not sure about Blackmon but interesting though but definitely need a top level safety instead of Gregory to make a healthy Pats D elite.

Agreed. We really can't afford one of the top FA safeties and their are only two 1st round safeties in this draft. If we can upgrade Gregory I'm all for it.

Reading Mayoclinic's analysis has me very doubtful of Wilfork - well, that and his weight gain. Really, really, really want to see him back, but I'm not optimistic.

Really want the Pats to focus on the lines in the draft - and a TE and SS if there are any of either worth taking.

Why are we moving Chandler Jones to LDE?

Why are we moving Chandler Jones to LDE?

Because the Patriots are going to sign his big brother Arthur in free agency and Arthur will tell Chandler to get the hell out of his position.

We need a big/fast hitting safety to play along with McCourty. Like Rodney Harrison was. I am not against spending $$ on Whitner or bringing in Pollard if both pass physicals.

I think you're living in fantasy land if you think Wilfork is going to be fully recovered and be our 2014 starter at DT. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

My take:

QB: Tom Brady
RB: Vereen / Blount comvo
WR: Dobson
WR: POSSIBLE FA/Julian Edelman/Amendola
TE: Rob Gronkowski
TE: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA
C: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Ryan Wendell/Dan Connolly
LT: Nate Solder
RT: Sebastian Vollmer
LG: Logan Mankins
RG: Dan Connolly/Marcus Cannon/DRAFTED PLAYER / POSSIBLE FA

Defense:
RDE: Chandler Jones
DT: Vince Wilfork//DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA
DT: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Tommy Kelly
LDE: Rob Ninkovich
LB: Jerod Mayo
LB: Jamie Collins
LB: Donta'a Hightower
CB: Aqib Talib
CB: Alfonzo Dennard
S: Devin McCourty
S: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Steve Gregory/Duron Harmon

There are 6 positions I could see being up in the air, 3 on offense, and 3 on defense:

Offense:

- TE: Hooman and Mulligan need to be upgraded, either through FA or the draft
- Center: I don't see Wendell being the answer at center. Connolly could move to center, or a FA center could be signed, or a draft pick.
- RG: Connolly was mediocre at RG. He could be moved to center, or upgraded via FA or the draft (or both).

In addition, a WR spot is up in the air if Julian Edelman leaves.

Defense:

- DT: Wilfork could be cut and replaced with a FA or a draft pick
- DT: Kelly could be replaced with a FA or draft pick
- S: Gregory could remain the starter, be beat out by Harmon, or upgraded via FA or a draft pick

what are the chances of resigning Minitron, trading amendola for blackmon player for player?

Defense:
RDE: Chandler Jones
DT: Vince Wilfork//DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA
DT: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Tommy Kelly
LDE: Rob Ninkovich
LB: Jerod Mayo
LB: Jamie Collins
LB: Donta'a Hightower
CB: Aqib Talib
CB: Alfonzo Dennard
S: Devin McCourty
S: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Steve Gregory/Duron Harmon

I thought Kelly played well him and Vince are 2 bug questions marks. If I assume they are back I think 2 biggest areas of upgrade would be Gregory and Ninko. Ninko is just so average with little or no moves rushing the passer we are settling there.

Realistic?

Brady
Ridley/Vereen/Develin
Solder
Mankins
Draftee/Vet C/Connolly
Cannon
Vollmer
Gronk
Amendola
Edelman/Vet FA
Dobson

Nink
Kelly
Wilfork/Wilfork replacement (Silaga, Vet FA, Draftee)
Jones
Collins/Fletcher
Hightower
Mayo
Talib/vet FA
Dennard
McCourty
Gregory

There's room for tweaking, based upon post-draft performing rookies and other vet FA signings, but that's your realistic starting lineup.

Changes that are needed:
C
RG
TE2
WR1
S2

Changes that might be needed:
DT1
DT2
OLB2

OFFENSE

QB. Brady
RB Ridley
WR Amendola
WR Dobson
WR Thompkins
TE Gronkowski
LT Solder
LG Mankins
C Draft Travis Swanson
RG Connolly
RT Vollmer

DEFENSE

DT Wilfork
DT Kelly
DE Jones
DE Ninkovich
OLB Mayo
OLB Collins
MLB Hightower
SS Draft. Dion Bailey or Deone Bucannon
FS McCourty
CB Talib
CB Dennard

I don't see much change at all other then the hope of a upgrade at C and SS through the Draft

I actually think I was the one who brought up the Blackmon trade two weeks ago (change of scenery desperately needed, a la Randy Moss). I proposed Amendola+Player A+Pick(s). Obviously dreaming big here, but you never know! My hopes for the offseason:

Must Re-sign:
Talib
Edelman

Sign:
Emmanuel Sanders: he wants to be here, Bill loves him, contrary to popular belief, could be a bargain in terms of money just like Lloyd was (minus the performance)

Scott Chandler: Is lost in the hoopla surrounding Pitta, Pettigrew, Graham and Davis, snatch from a division rival

Bernard Pollard/TJ Ward/Donte Whitner: Pollard I am obviously kidding about, wouldn't want 1 Patriot Place to be burned to the ground ;) . Ward is intriguing but was always going to get a lot and with the performance of Chancellor last night, will get even more $$$.

Maybe sign a veteran like Deangelo Hall or Antoine Bethea like we did with A. Wilson and hope that works out.

Other than that, draft defense, even if we haven't hit on a CB in years (the jury is out on Logan Ryan, but a good sample size)

Close to my ideal:

QB: Tom Brady
RB: leGarette Blount
WR: Aaron Dobson
WR: Danny Amendola
TE: Eric Ebron in trade up or Austin Sefarian-Jenkins
TE: Gronk
LT: Nate Solder
LG: Logan Mankins
OC: Alex Mack
RG: Marcus Cannon
RT: Sebastian Vollmer

DE: Rob Ninkovich
DT: Tommy Kelly
DT: Armond Armstead
DE: Chandler Jones
SLB: Marcus Smith (draft) & Hightower
MLB: Jerod Mayo
WLB: Jamie Collins
CB: Dennard/ Antone Exum (draft)
CB: Aqib Talib
Nickel: Dennard/ Ryan
S: Devin McCourty
S: Steve Gregory

Edit: if they can get a second rounder for Mallett (big if), then I'd also take Aaron Donald for even more speed on defense.

NOTES
A) In a 2 WR set, we have Dobson and Amendola as starters, with Amendola in the slot.
B) Wilfork and Kelly have to be considered as questionable.
C) Talib isn't signed yet.
D) Ridley is the starter. Vereen is our 3rd down back. But this doesn't affect the discussion.

There is about $20M or so available, if Wilfork, Kelly, Gregory, Sopoaga and A. Wilson are considered not on the team, for planning purposes. Obviously, one could make the choice to include them in the team's plans. Also, understand that some of these could be met by players we have. For example, Siliga or Chris Jones could be one of the starting DT's.

6 STARTERS NEEDED
TE (one idea is a high draft pick)
C (Wendell or replacement)
CB (Talib or replacement)
DT (Wilfork or replacement)
DT (Kelly or replacement)
SS (Gregory or replacement)

7 BACKUPS NEEDED
#3 WR (Edelman or replacement)
#3 TE (Hooman or replacement)
#3 DE (Bequette or replacement)
#5 DE (Carter or replacement)
#4 LB (Spikes or replacement)
#5 LB (Fletcher or replacement)
#3 RB (Blount or replacement)

On offense i believe they will go back to the 2 TE set following the draft/FA

QB: Tom Brady
RB: Vereen
WR: Dobson
WR: POSSIBLE FA/Julian Edelman
TE: Rob Gronkowski
TE: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA
C: DRAFTED PLAYER/Ryan Wendell
LT: Nate Solder
RT: Sebastian Vollmer
LG: Logan Mankins
RG: Dan Connolly

Defense:
LDE: Chandler Jones
DT: Vince Wilfork
DT: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA/Tommy Kelly
RDE: Rob Ninkovich
LB: Jerod Mayo
LB: Jamie Collins
LB: Donta'a Hightower
CB: Aqib Talib
CB: Alfonzo Dennard
S: Devin McCourty
S: DRAFTED PLAYER/POSSIBLE FA

I just can't see us paying the money for Mack. I think that a WR and cheaper center is more likely. Of course, the WR might be Edelman.

I must admire your dream about Armstead starting. I suspect that Chris Jones is more likely.

Sciz tells us that BB was very high on Armstead after mini-camp. I haven't seen that myself but Sciz is reliable so I'll go with it. Also, I was painting more of a sub unit there. I could see Wilfork/Siliga and Kelly being the starters in base.

As for Mack, someone posted that OLine elsewhere and I was very impressed so I went with it. Whether we'll do it or not, I don't know.

Please dont be content returning WENDALL OR CONNOLLY! Unless u r content with making the playoffs and eventually at some point run into a wall and have their tailsides handed to them again. Both are below average olineman! Would any patriot fan in his right sober put them out there protecting Tom Brady against Seattle SF or even Denver when Miller and Wolfe return and im sure they will add a player. Bellichick would have to be drunk to send them out there protecting Brady against that monster we just saw. They are subpar talent who gritted somehow 2 seasons, but the glass slippers time is over for them and its midnight. Also we need a true #1 like Blackmon Brady can trust to beat coverage like the hawks and catch the ball. When does Brady run for a td then handoff for a conversion?? Never!! He didnt trust anybody including Edelman!! Also Ninko and Hightower need to be replaced. Ninko has no speed passrush and Hightower is to slow to strike down these running qbs. They will convert on third every time with no passrush and a slow mlb. We can have any fa we want if we free up capspace by cutting Gregory, soppoaga, wilson,CONNOLLY, maybe ninko depending on his salary. Restructure mayo gronk mankins and brady if he is willing.
