Tyrann Mathieu aka Honey Badger to the Patriots?

We had Tyrann Mathieu on the team for 1.5 years, BB cut him. A 5'9 CB that has a hell of an instinct for making plays but just can't cover worth a damn.

Mathieu=Sterling Moore. Pass. He'll get ripped apart in coverage in the pros.
Not sure if you're serious or not.

I have been meaning to ask why. Is there a reasonable expectation today that there would be someone in the draft of more value in the 7th round than Mathieu?

This is a guy who would be a killer special teamer right away, and who can return punts when he isn't covering kicks (it's nice to have a few guys with return skills in the event of injury). He'd be a 7th rounder with a very good shot at making the team.

I know he smoked a plant, and I know people like to believe that choirboys win games. The Ravens and Giants have spent the last few years proving that untrue. Mathieu made some youthful mistakes, but I have never heard that he is a bad person. Janoris Jenkins had way more red flags and I would have taken him gladly as well.

Talib yes, Mathieu no? I can not see why, unless you feel Mathieu simply isn't an NFL player. In Round 7 I am sprinting my pick in if I'm the Pats.

The weed in and of itself does not bother me (as per my handle); that he allowed himself to be expelled from LSU of all places does bother me. What also bothers me is his lack of anything resembling size. We need more CBs who can successfully defend the Megatrons of the NFL. Another slot CB to back up Arrington would be nice, but they are more easily found than outside CBs.

I would rather see the Patriots draft a troubled player like Mathieu in a late round than waste picks on players like Ebner and Williams. Neither of
these players was a defensive starter and Ebner only played a few plays on defense at OSU.

I am in complete agreement that many late-round (and, sadly, early-round) picks were wasted utterly on the easily-foretold crapness of Mal Williams, Ebert, Ebner, Markell Carter, Lee Smith, Tom Welch, Kade Weston, Zac Robinson, Darryl Richard, Jake Ingram, George Bussey, OBurger, Wheatley, Crable, O'Connell, Wilhite, Bo Ruud, Kareem Brown, Oldenburg, Justin Rogers, Mike Richardson, Justise Hairston, Oscar Lua, Mike Elgin, Dan Stevenson, Andy Stokes, Guss Scott, Dexter Reid, Cedric Cobbs, PK Sam, Christian Morton, Kingsbury, Spencer Nead, Ethan Kelley, Anwoine Womack, Brock Williams, Leonard Myers, Owen Pochman, TJ Turner, Stachelski, Jeff Marriott, Dave Nugent & Casey Tisdale.

Hmmm...after looking at that list, maybe a 7th on the Dummy Badger isn't such a bad idea, after all.

Every team in the NFL has a list like that.

Any time after the 3rd round would work for me.

And yet they are both core special teams players. I think my definition of "waste" and yours are considerably different.

Why does this come up year after year? The Patriots get draft picks every year. Shouldn't the goal of using these draft picks be to push weaker players off the roster? I honestly don't get it. It's like you believe we shouldn't draft anybody this year, because then guys like Jeremy Ebert might get pushed off the roster, which then means that he was a wasted draft pick.

You do realize that the roster is limited to 53 players, correct?

Cannot like this enough. People have a strange disconnect where they can only view players through the prism of their draft status, and somehow that becomes what defines them. Captain Stone this is not even directed at you, as yours may have been tongue in cheek. Speaking to the general vibe of this plague.

Once they are on the roster, I care about who can help win the next game, and the ones who could help win a few down the road. How they are acquired only matters if it comes with a hefty salary.

All of the cursing of late round picks and such---every time they trade up, it's a waste of resources; when they trade down, a wasted opportunity---how many years did people complain about them trading up in the 5th for Matthew Slater?---misses the most important point, the one ol' Uncle Heatster just made: draft choices, while a very valuable part of the equation, are just a part of the construction of the roster. Doesn't it only make sense that for every time we celebrate an undrafted player like Mike Wright or Kyle Love or Stephen Neal making the roster that necessarily someone, likely a draft choice in competition for a similar role, will lose out on that spot?
