Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

That was a stupid comment by Welker regardless of whether it was in jest. Bad business decision no matter how you look at it. However that won't negate the Pats' stupidity if they let Welker walk as if he is a JAG. I'm obviously speculatiing but I don't think he is asking for a cap busting contract given that he's aware of how they operate.

Edelmen is very good and has a place on this team but does anyone honestly doubt that Welker is better and should play ahead of him? That doesn't mean JE sucks by default but you have to be a kool aid sipping front office sychophant to deny Welker "gives the team the best chance to win" when compared to JE. I have no issue with WW losing time to Hernandez but not JE. WW provides extremely talented depth to Hernandez if they choose to do that but again JE is no Welker.

Overreact much? BB is not going to lose his lockerroom over one comment from a player that was said tongue in cheek. Calm down now, the sky is not falling!

Yeah, I back off it later on in the thread. Really I am just more frustrated by the impending media reaction.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

The subject line of this thread left out a very important part......He Said it with "a smile and a wink" That covers it and BB should accept it as a comment said in humor, nothing more, nothing less.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

If you want to stress out over this, that's your business. But I'm not worrying about it and I doubt anything will come of this other than what is said on forums or in newspapers.

I'm not stressing over this at all. I just laugh at how so many Patrot fans live in Wonderland with Alice. :D

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

People can spin it however they want about Welker joking but there was a measure of truth in what he said and how he feels. It's obvious he feels disrespected right or wrong.

I don't know what his contract demands were and perhaps he was looking for Fitzgerald money which was never going to happen. He did play out an undervalued contract and I'm sure in his eyes he should have been rewarded for that. From the Patriots perspective they paid him more than anybody else would have at the time and were rewarded for their investment. Both sides are right from their perspective.

I agree he's probably not worth 9/27 given his age come year three of the contract but I think he's shown he's good for the first without a doubt and probably the second although at this age it's not a certainty and the Patriots like certainty or at least hedging their bets. He'll cost 11.5 under the tag for next year and I cannot see them doing that. I agree with some that Denver would be a natural landing spot given Stokley's age and the that it puts Wes closer to home in Texas. That would suck.

While I agree Bill losing the locker room over this is pure hyperbole I still wish Welker hadn't said it. It will only make negotiations more difficult and I can see him being benched for the first quarter of the Seattle game. They need to get off to a good start in that game and not let the Hawks stick around. They have an awful passing game so the sooner you limit their running attach the better it will be.

Wes is an All time Patriot and I hope they work something out but I just don't see it happening. I also think he's still a huge cog in this offense and they aren't going to move on seamlessly next year without him but hopefully they at least use him to his full potential this year.

BB benched Welker at the start of a playoff game because of several lighthearted foot references he made about Rex Ryan. I'm not sure that the smile/wink explanation for the "stick it in Bill's face" dig will be warmly received by BB considering Welker's contract/playing time or lack thereof.

I'm not saying or predicting that BB will take any adverse action because of the comment but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Complete apples and oranges. Trash talking an opponent about their personal lives wasn't cool...imagine if Brady had been up there and said something about how many kids Cromartie has out of wedlock. This was just a light hearted comment, probably because he's feeling good about how he's played and what his worth is. Or hell, maybe he said it jsut to get the local media riled up after their overblown "Welker Snaps-Gate" coverage.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

Why do people keep saying this? Edelman wasn't playing the slot. Hernandez was playing more of Wes' position than Julian.

The loss of Edelman has gotten Deion Branch more snaps not Welker.

I don't know why this board is so determined to hate on Julian Edelman.

I agree, it's Hernandez' injury that has gotten Wes more looks.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

So BB is having his presser at the moment. Tom E. Curran asked him about Welker's comment, and I thought Belichick went stone cold assassin mode when he said "I haven't really seen it", implying to me that you can bet your ass he heard it. Then when Curran tried to follow up, he cut him off and said you'll have to ask Wes about it.

So I'm guessing....pretty pissed.

Consequences to follow.

Kudos on Curran for asking the big stinking question about the big stinking elephant in the room.

Not many kudos for Canned Bill's response - as usual dead pan, devoid of any spirit or emotion, cold, calculating, a lie. I can see why people dislike that man.

This lying thing is unnecessary and Parcells proved that.

**** Vermeil proved that you don't have to act like you have a Napoleon Complex in order to lead men to a SB title.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

Come on....anyone could see he wasn't going to be too impressed by Welker saying that. Of course he's going to be ticked off.

I still can't believe Welker had to go stirring the pot like that. Dude needs to learn to STFU. He isn't doing himself any favors.

Wonderful. Maybe we can run him out of town and pick up Rex Ryan after he is fired. He is much more affable, which is what we all know is the most important quality in a coach.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

"It was a joke. I don't know what to else say about it. Bill and I have a good relationship."

Can this die now?

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

I think people need to get a big brown paper bag and breathe deeply over and over.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

Rumor has it that Welker will suspend Belichick for three games for not making an issue out of it. :D

No disrespect, but I just don't get how fans of the Patriots keep clinging to the argument that this guy is replaceable in any way shape or form. He IS the passing offense right now, and for the most part has been since Moss left. Is that an ideal situation? No, but you just can argue with how important he is to this offense. Period. He's barely a peg behind Brady imo.

Fine if they don't want to sign him long-term, I'm sure they have their reasons that we're not privy to. But if he keeps up this type of production (and why wouldn't he?), there is no way in hell they just let him walk next year, $11.5M or not. Brady would probably even re-structure if need be (and possible).

It's a damn shame they haven't been able to get anything done--just so pointless. One or more of the parties here are really screwing the pooch. I just can't see Welker allowing his agent to have stood firm on a Fitzgerald-type contract, but at the same time, he may have good reasons for playing hardball with the Pats. Oh well, just enjoy it while it lasts.

Welker said this? Today?

That's awesome and all but he wouldn't have had to say anything if he had just shut up in the first place.

Belichick, on the other hand, has proven nothing at all as a head coach.

re: Wes Welker: "It's nice to stick it in Bill's face every once in a while"

I don't hate Edelman, I just think it's stupid to substitute him for Wes Welker. Wes is the better player and that has been proven over these past few weeks with Edelman and Hernandez out. I just hope BB (and/or McDaniels, whichever is responsible) takes this remark as a joke and keeps Welker in place when Hernandez and/or Edelman return. We want wins and Wes Welker is a winner.
