Re: Our pass defense flat-out sucks (again)... can we just admit it please?

He had three noticeable bad plays in my eyes:

- The second dropped INT
- the nmissed tackle which was more Gregory's fault
- the PI in the end

The rest of the night he was solid. You can argue that when he was bad, he was really bad. But he was mostly solid. The first dropped INT was a great play by McCourty that was broken up by the receiver.

Arrington was far worse with getting burnt multiple times and falling down on what would have been a game winning INT. Yet, people aren't trashing him.

All of our CBs were bad. Including McCourty.

In the most crucial part of the game, he got smoked by Jones at the LOS and, as we've seen countless number of times, he lacks the ability to look back and play the ball. He just can't do it for some reason. He's just not a good CB. He shouldn't be starting, but unfortunately, all of our CBs shouldn't be starting.

This doesn't make any sense.

Arrington, McCourty, Nink and Chung are veterans with ample experience in this system. What are they going to get more proficient at? Sucking when the chips are down!

Yes, Bob, it does make sense. There's a reason that all but the biggest stiffs seem to get better over the course of a season. It happens with all teams, too, not just the Patriots. Familiarity allows lesser players to seem improved.

Go to a basketball court and find the team that always plays together and looks good when they do, even though none of the players seem very good on their own. Then go find those players when they try fitting in with a different team. You'll find that they often get crushed.

Serious question here to the people who like to say things like "The refs suck, but....."

How do you expect a sports team to overcome bad officiating when it's involving game and possession changing calls?

I'll be the first to admit that the refs were horrible. But anybody that says that the Pats didn't do enough to lose that game by themselves is simply in denial. How many times did Flacco loft it up tonight to have a wide open receiver run under the ball? You even said yourself in the other thread, and this one, that McCourty and Arrington are not starter quality CB's. The refs sucked and cost the team a hell of a lot in this game. There is no denying that, so you won't see me try. But if the Pats execute better on both sides of the ball, they're an afterthought. Five football fields of total offense tonight by the Ravens. Let's look at that first before we start b!tching about a crew of zebras that should have never been on the field in the first place.

1- why can't our offense close out a game and run a few freaking minutes off a clock in clutch games?
2- why did they try that freaking stunt play *again* on offense?
3- why was woodhead in so much?
4- can we really do no better than arrington?
5- why does our defense look like a sieve when we need them most?

1. It's the theme of the last few years..just can't close it out.
2. who knows
3. Woodhead was in more becasue of the hurry up O. He fits that role better than ridley
4. We can. But it cost $$
5. it's 1 game...too small of a sample size

the PI on mayo was as big as any which got the ravens moving

Sorry, but your argument is a poor one. You can have more than one problem and in this case, the officials were responsible for a significant amount of the defensive problems. Flacco's not lofting it up there if the calls are being made properly. If that phantom call on Mayo doesn't get called, for example, the Ravens have 78 yards and a touchdown that never happens.

And that's just one of the bad calls. This idea that you can't point to the officials because of the defense just doesn't hold water.

He isn't nearly as bad as you said. He is a starting quality CB, but maybe not the LCB. But did a great job vs. Smith early and Smith got most of his yards when they started matching him up to Arrington, Moore, and Dowling.

You said above that they are not starting caliber players. Yet they are and are so as well experienced veterans in this system.

How many more years do you propose they be given before they figure it out?

So frustrating to watch this team lose games like this. WTF?? Why can't this team put opponents away??

putting the horrible officiating aside, this game ended like the super bowl...offense unable to grind it out and the defense giving up huge pass plays. didn't understand why the d coudln't force the ravens to dink and dunk. it is what it is. they need to rebound in a big way next week.

a lot of pats players tweeting now..PISSED. I would be as well...

Well this is like last year...lose 2 in a row..and then win (hopefully going on a big run)

It's the truth...............There were no calls in the first quarter and then the flags started raining down.

It's not the truth, at all. It's a stupid claim that makes no sense at all. Roughhousing in the first quarter doesn't explain the Mayo PI call, the non-call when Edelman got popped in the endzone, etc...

Re: Our pass defense flat-out sucks (again)... can we just admit it please?

I'm sure this will just get locked... but god... McCourty has regressed so bad it isn't even funny. What a POS. Arrington is awful too.

At least we can accept that our defense is the same old terrible defense we've come to expect over the last few years... particularly in the pass game. Our corners are TERRIBLE.

I would pay the 15/mil a year Revis gets, he's worth it. I really wish we could just find a decent CB, honestly. Ty Law is a total a-hole lol, but he could PLAY, and I want that back.

Clearly you watched a different game than everyone else.

McCourty played excellent the entire game. The calls on him were absolute BS. He didn't even touch Smith on the last call. I mean, when Chris Collinsworth says that McCourty didn't touch Smith and it was a bad call, you know it was..

Seriously. People bagging on McCourty are clueless..

I said it last week, now I am vindicated, Brady is now one of the biggest chokers in the game. Yes, yes, I know, the homers will point to games where he has come up with a drive late in the game when they are behind. The Dallas game last year for example. The real problem is that when they are already down, there's nothing to lose. And he can function. But I have never seen a quarterback fail as consistently as Brady when he has the slim lead late and just needs one solid drive to ice it.

Think back about how badly he crumbles in these big moments. Against the colts on the famous 4 and 2. Against the colts in 10 he couldn't engineer a drive to close it out, James sanders saved him with a pick though. Against the giants last year in both the regular season and the super bowl his drives sputtered giving the ball back to Eli with just enough time left. Against the colts in the 06 championship game he needed just one more first down and couldn't get it. Against the ravens last year in the title game he could not ice it, instead he threw incomplete to Hernandez which gave flacco time for that final drive that ended with a missed kick.

Then you have tonight, all Brady needed was one or two first downs. But he could not muster it. It is a definite pattern. And it has been a pattern since the acl injury. He sees phantom rushers and ducks under for no reason, or ducks under before the rusher gets there where a calmer qb who can actually operate under pressure would have side stepped. The worst part is that if that play happens during the middle of a game, Brady side steps the rush like a champ and throws a strike downfield. But when he has to protect a lead, he flounders. He's too worried about messing up a lead that is pre existing.

I don't know what the solution is except to start taking the ball out of his hands late and get a better running game. Or, you just have to try and throw non stop early and build a big lead when there is less pressure and he feels more comfortable to operate.

Thank you for saying it! I've been noticing Brady's been falling off for awhile. He looks like a ***** back there in the pocket sometimes. Nothing frustrates me more then when he ducks under early and falls to the ground...take a hit like a MAN BRADY! Get back up, get pissed, and drive it DOWN THE OPPONENTS THROATS!

I had a dream last night about me *****ing out Brady for his actions. It was nice, I felt like I got some things off my chest. But I wish someone close to Brady would tell him bluntly that he's messin' up, and also someone close to B.B. to ***** him out as well, because his whole demeanor is starting to piss me off. He needs to knock off his **** attitude during press conferences, it was fine when they won superbowls, but now they've lost TWO SUPERBOWLS TO THE SAME TEAM in almost the SAME WAY. It's ridiculous, man. I'd rather go 4-12 and miss the playoffs then have to watch them choke in the superbowl again

Calm down guys. The Patriots lost a tough game on the road that they could've/should've won. Same thing last week... A loss to the Cards in a game that they had in their grasp until the final horrific play. This team easily could be 3-0 right now and sitting at the top of the NFL power ranking. These losses sting so much because we shot ourselves in the foot.

With a weak division and hopefully after some lessons learned, the Patriots will be sitting pretty in no time. I think that we will meet up with the Ravens again when it really matters.

He's not nearly as good as you think he is. He is closer to last year than he is to his rookie year at this point.

I rarely saw Dowling on the field.
