Mangini's Role: NY Daily News Today [merged]

Umm, you did hear Peter King say the Colts have done this too, right? Not that two wrongs make a right.

No, I did not hear this. Would be shocked if true. Dungy is too much of a choir boy for that. Bill Polian on the other hand... if you think Belichick is sneaky, he's nothing compared to our hall of fame architect.

That said, he's not stupid enough to get caught doing something like this. So I doubt the Colts did this too. What did King say exactly?

Um, this very thing was posted a couple pages back, troll-boy.

I'll say this much: If the Patriots lose any draft picks because of this incident, well then considering how wide-spread this little business is the NFL will have the shortest draft in history. All be over on the first day.

How do you figure? There's proof of the pats cheating. No such proof exists of any other team doing this.

I don't know what King said, but Tiki Barber, who's actually played a few downs in the NFL, said on Sirius last night that every team steals signals and everybody knows it. Our punishable offense was taping, which is against the rules and for which Eric Mangini turned us in.

Goodell's problem is that the incident exposed the broadly accepted cheating that goes on in the league and he has to react strongly. Mangini did no one a favor by his actions: the patriots (obviously), the league (by putting cheating on the table) and himself (by going public with the NYC media instead of turning in the evidence and letting the league handle the matter).

I'm willing to predict that this will ultimately backfire on Mangini.

It will be interesting to see how Mangini's former defensive players

on the Pats treat him the second time around. They have always

been quite chummy. They may regard him now as a traitor.

i am willing to bet that, at this moment, the patriots are sifting through the films of every game for the past couple of years in order to find visual evidence of what other teams are doing.

The person with the camera, in this case, Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella, would tape the coach's hand signals as he sends the defense in. Then the camera person would verbally call out down and distance so the recorder's microphone would pick it up. Then when the tape is analyzed, the hand signals are matched up to down and distance and defensive scheme.

"They would have it all chronicled such as: 4-3 even defense, cover 2, hand to the belt, index finger up," the coach said. "Now if you had a sharp guy in the huddle who was in for every play, you would teach him the signals and he would look over to the sidelines and steal the signals and tell the quarterback."

So it seems like we tape it for future use, doesn't sound like anything we could use in a game.

This has been discussed in other threads, but Peter King had an interview with Rex Ryan before the Ravens/Colts game in last year's playoffs. Ryan said he had to change his signals because the Colts were so good at stealing signals. Also, I believe King was on a radio show yesterday saying the Colts were very good at stealing signals.

Robert Kraft would really impress me if he fired Belichick.

I'll take a high draft pick or two, though.

Cousins,
First of all, they have all done it including the Jets. Well we got caught in a sting so bad for us. To say we were cheaters because we got caught is one thing, but to say we we're the Dirty Dynasty, all or wins are tainted and have the teams go back and check their videos to see if the Patriots wins were because of a helpful guess (people this stealing is not a perfect science) as to what the defensive calls were on the field or they actually got out played.

The majority of this nation say they have cheated on their taxes (can this be called a competitive advantage?). Yet only a percentage get caught. I am not advocating cheating on your taxes, nor does it make it right. But if you do cheat are you going to single out your neighbor and call the IRS? What if he retaliates? You'll get caught too. My point is let's see how many of the other 31 teams will go on board this train and say "we have never done anything like this so let's crucify the Patriots". Teams will be very careful on how they react to this.

If all these smart teams that say they suspect we were stealing signals all of this time would allow their defensive coaches calling in plays to get exposed then they are stupid or how's this....perhaps change the signals so it screws up this big "competitive advantage" and it messes up our espionage factor.

BB states, he was under the impression that he interpreted the rules one way, RG says wrong, it was a no-no. He didn't take drugs, he didn't kill dogs, he didn't laugh and wink as one of his team players tried to ruin the career of another player (nothing was ever said about that) by trying to cripple him, he isn't on a nationally televised network saying the Pats team should forfeit a game and all the past Pats wins are tained yet he won a Super Bowl as an O-Lineman for a team that advocated trying to maim the opposing players by diving at knees and legs to gain a "competitive advantage", and his running back on the other network says the Pats wins are tainted too and he made his yards over this O-Lineman, and oh by the way, wasn't your teammate and his wife selling some substances and did either of you have a "taste"? He wasn't on a competition committee that changed the rules of the NFL game to specifically help his team. BB didn't call the league to complain about how the Dolphins cheated last year and their players admitted it. What BB did was interpret the rules the way he saw them. He was wrong. He apologized. He got caught and all the other 31 didn't.

The information that BB was supposed to be getting from these films was never received at the now infamous "halftime mad scientist project" , yet stupid Jets S Rhodes says it's like "they knew what we were doing". So "idiot boy" on NFL Live says the game should be forfeited. The Pats had no "half time" information dummy!

BB will have to pay the piper. I think the league and the other coaches who add to this will be making a big mistake. They know he does it (and they aren't prepared?) and you know what, so do they. BB might be made an example here, but Mangini is toast and so are the Jets around the league.
We know the Colts, the Dolphins, the Panthers and some of the other well known usual suspects and many more will be very quiet about this.

We got busted but this was not any where near the crime these people who want our heads are maintaining. Because everyone else does it does not make it right, but let the action fit the crime and lets not be crazy.

Re: Mangini's Role: NY Daily News Today

It goes on to say that the Pats video guy was nailed at halftime, then interrogated during the second half. My point is, how could this have helped the Pats if they essentially werent able to "take advantage of the sign stealing in the second half, where they put a whooping on the Jets...

That's why this is so laughable. The video camera was taken at halftime while the score was 7-7. Those pitiful fools couldnt account for the other 31 points that came afterwards. Evidently we didn't need them to beat this joke of a team.

I don't think many teams illegally film the opposing coaches during a game. The fact that they were already warned about this by the league (in the offseason) makes it even worse. Belichick is a legendary HOF coach, but his legacy will be somewhat tainted by his actions.

I would like to take this moment to officially congratulate the newly crowned winners of Super Bowl 36, the St. Louis Rams.

Or was it taken in the first quarter? Anyway, whatever, Womangini is a rat. I think it's funny all the camera personal, scouting etc are coming forward saying this is common practice. We were just stupid enough to do it from the sidelines.

Cousins,
Look lets put this in perspective. We got caught and they didn't.
I will say this and any troll out there can comment. If there was one football game that had to be won or the end of the world would happen and we all die if we don't win, who would be your choice of a coach of any out there now?

It there was a QB who had top perform in that game to win it or the world is lost, who would you want? A guy that throws 350 yards and 4 TD's and acts like he's got a mouse in his jock at the line of scrimmage or a guy that will go to battle for your life (I remember something about a comment made by a certain QB after line play was not to his liking in a playoff game)?

My point is that there is no "taint" on the accomplishments here.

I personally applaud Mr. Mangini for bringing this to light after his devasting loss to the Patriots and not when he knew this was happening behind the scenes during his tenure here. Bravo.

I hope I don't need to put a sarcasm tag on this one.

Cousin,
Why doesn't the question be asked of him about that?
He doesn't comment about his tenure here? He doesn't want that tainted? Then his hiring was a sham by the Jets FO. How can they hire our defensive coordinator for their HC position when he cheated in all those Super Bowl wins? The Jets FO should demand a recount!

Our retort to all. This ain't no taint.
