Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

I'm sure Herron is excited.

Yeeeeeah! I got picked up by a team whose coach is acting like a 3 year old who just had his toy Tonka stolen, not because of the player I am.
Are you joking?

If you were a player and had a choice of:

a) Vikings practice squad, or
b) Patriots 53-man roster

who would you pick?

Fringe players need a chance to show what they have, to be given an opportunity. You can bet that Herron is pleased.

As far as any player saying they'd rather be coahed by Brad Childress than Bill Belichick, well, I guess you are entitled to any belief you want.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

Wheeling and dealing is fine and SHOULD happen, even more than it does. I choose not to get over a coach calling another coach and asking that a player not be on the regular roster this year as a special favor. This should not be allowed. The CBA should protect players from this type of interference.
Yes, the Union is there to prevent JAGs like Herron being signed to the 53-man roster of a superbowl contender instead of the practice squad of a perennial loser. Herron must be furious. He should file a grievance.

What will happen is that either Herron has Patriot potential, or he doesn't. If he does, he's on hte Patriots 53-man, not the VIkes ps. If he doesn't have enough potential, BB will cut him, and the VIkes will sign him to their practice squad.

Nothing will have changed except that one JAG can say for the rest of his life, long after he's out of the NFL and selling insurance or something, that he was once a New England Patriot.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

This is choice! The fact that the Pats tried to sneak Mills through waivers to get him on the PS indicates he didn't have a chance at playing a major role this season due to injuries and lack of depth at TE. Given that they've invested a little more than a year in Mills, I can see how they would have preferred to stash him on the PS in hopes of having him groomed for his 3rd season.

However, in relative terms of importance to this season, this is miniscule and can't be prominent in BBs thoughts at this time. He's let it go, and to have a Childress quote implying this was a big deal is really humorous. In the scheme of things, this is slight, and it's likely Herron will be gone before too long as well.

Small time thoughts from a small-town team.
Yes, this seems to be the best summary yet. Thanks.

Re: Was Childress accusing BB of being dishonest?

In his quote he saYs "..you find out who is straightforward and honest"

i HOPE HE WAS NOT IMPLYING bb IS NOT STRAIGHTFORWARD OR HONEST

This I am sure BB will neveer forget

Childress thought Belichick was bluffing on his threat to claim David Herron. Obviously Belichick wasn't bluffing. But whatever. It's small potatoes. If they really really wanted Mills, they would have kept him on the 53.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

childress reminds me of Ned Flanders. I can just hear him on the sidelines, "okalie dokalie gang, let's run the ole dipsey-do!"

How is asking about a waived -- and thus free agent -- interference? Alternately, how is asking the proper contact point on a team about access to one of their signed players constitute interference? This is what you do when you want to make a trade. Sometimes you trade picks, but for bubble guys, you can do other things in trade.

Now, if Belichick were making side deals with the player himself or the agent, that would be tampering. This is just how deals get done.

As for being on the roster or PS, how is that any different from a guy who's a top starter on one team becoming a backup on another? Or even going to a system where his skills will be diminished due to scheme or training regimen or anything else?

The stuff people obsess about here is really petty.

P.S. I think it makes total sense to call and ask if you're signing one of their guys too. It's a great way of avoiding a pissing match later on. Belichick is now on record offering they both take their respective guys back. Minny has a history of poison pills and other stuff. Now they get to walk around all puffed up like they got the better of a situation, when in fact we got their former player.

FYI - The minimum salary for a PS this year is $79,900 or $4,700 each week.

Herron is scheduled to earn $285,000 as a rookie.
Mills is scheduled to earn $360,000.

Re: Brad Childress/Belichick confrontation concerning Garrett Mills

Brad Childress was probably wrong to report this situation to the press;

however, Bill Belichick was not being a true professional approaching

Childress in the first place. If a player is put on the waiver wire and is

claimed by another team, that is just tough luck. Bill could have

included both Mills and Rodgers on his 53 man roster and later tried

to put them on the practice squad.

Please! This kind of give and take happens all the time during this time of the year. Are telling me you would want your FO not to fight for players with every asset at their command. Do you really think BB is the first coach to try and keep a player by threatening to take one of their's. THAT HIS JOB!!!!

You are right however in your comment of Childress' big mouth. It further confirms why the Vikings seem to be getting worse since he's been the coach. Even though the Vikes are in the NFC's worst division, I'd trade that SF for the Vikes right now. I wouldn't be surprise if it isn't a top 5 pick. Childress will be gone in 2 years....or less

This weekend is really being a buzz kill

1. Rodney suspended

2 Seymoer out 6 weeks

3 Belichick said or did not say something about a jet player

4 Randy Moss could be cut traded or whatever..

5 Now Belichick asked if they dont put a claim on someone..

What could be next...

Lets just tee it up and play some football..

Nor most other coaches. If anyone doesn't believe that this type of thing happens all the time, they are naive. The difference is that Childress went to the press. How are other coaches going to feel when they call Childress about something if they think it will end up on the sports pages? The coaching fraternity is a small one and you rarely hear one speaking ill of a colleague. After all, they could be hiring one another after one gets fired.
I know one team that won't be hiring B.Childress once he's fired from Minnesota/LA?

Thanks, Miguel. Here's a quote from PFT, which I know a lot of you guys hate, but Florio is a lawyer and as weak as he is on football analysis, he is strong on the CBA and player contracts:
The broader question, as we see it, is whether Belichick's offer to Childress constitutes an attempt at collusion, and whether it would give the NFLPA grounds for filing a grievance under the CBA, or other relief under federal labor laws. Agreements by individual teams that frustrate the system that has been created for filling NFL rosters are presumably forbidden, and could lead to a real problem for Belichick, if anyone pursues the matter. And if what Childress is saying is true.

The point I'm making is that the attempted (and alleged) collusion was unsuccessful, which is why Herron has an opportunity to be on a roster. Had the (alleged) collusion been successful, these two players would both be making under $80,000 instead of over a quarter million. And in that case, there would be grounds for a grievance, though it would likely be impossible to prove.

Belichick's goal, lest the 'cheap cheap' Danny Boy idiots misinterpret this, would not be to save money. Belichick was trying to save roster spots. The effect, though, would have been to deny Mills several hundred thousand dollars. That ain't chump change for the likes of you and me.

Re: Was Childress accusing BB of being dishonest?

The bottom line is that the Patriots tried to prevent Mills from getting his salary this year and that is collusion. That is against the CBA and the union will go after the Pats. How would you feel if you were Mills and the pats tried to take away 200k this year? If this is all true I can see the NFL taking away Pats draft picks.

Wow, a Jets fan suggesting we should lose draft picks. Shocking.

Worst case I could see the Patriots being fined although it's likely that no-one can prove this conversation took place and very likely no-one can prove the intent of Belichick to hurt the player vs. simply not losing him.

Oh well, Jets fans only have 6 days until reality will bite them in the ass.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to widen the smug grin on some Jets fan who ought to be worrying about whether the HC of the NYJ is going all Coughlin on his team. He should be worried about rookie left guards and first round cornerbacks who've barely had a day of practice.

I don't see how this is relevant. Your coach tried to collude to keep a player he should have just kept on the roster. In your eyes he can do no wrong, but this was wrong. If this was any other coach I would say the same thing. It's bad for the sport, it's bad for the players. If Mangini did this I would say the same thing.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

The PS, contrary to popular myth, is NOT where you stash guys you think are going on to great things. It's where you put guys you know, who can help you PRACTICE well. So losing a guy is a major pain in the ass because now you have to find some unknown to try and do stuff. It's not like you lost some future star. Guys like Brady as a rookie, that have some kind of spark or intrigue, you keep on the roster.

Excellent, excellent point.

My question is, how did Belichick know that Childress wanted Mills? It doesn't seem like he would call Bill and tell him of his intentions. The first Belichick should have known was when Mills signed with the Vikings.

Either Childress is lying, or Mills agent is an information sieve and tried to get Belichick to maybe guarantee Mills' full salary, or somehow to extract something from the Patriots, using the Vikings offer as leverage.

Right, clearly it's not as simple as others would like it to be. And unless Childress has the conversation taped - it never happened. Poor Brad. He loses to Belichick in the Super Bowl. Then he gets punked on MNF last year. I guess he thinks he's even now.

Re: Signing Herron WAS revenge says Star Tribune

Who do you think will be cut first? Mills or Herron?

Probably Herron. Mills has been dinged up enough to be stashed on IR if he's not one of the Vikes' best 53.
