Re: Patriots may be the heaviest favored team ever in odds to win SB before week 1 be

Maybe there's a difference between U.S. and U.K. odds but I don't think that can be right.

You bet $100 at 2-1 and you get the other guy's $200 and keep your $100. If you only got $200 total, what about bets where the team is odds-on (5-8 rather than 8-5). If the quoted interpretation were true, any odds-on bet would lead to a loss even if you won!

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:1 means you bet 1, to get 1 in return
2:1 mean you bet 1 to get 2 in return (Red is 2:1 in roullette, if you put $100 on red and it comes up, the hand you back $200)
8:5 means you bet 5 to receive 8 in return ($100 dollar bet yields $160)

General rule of thumb..the higher the number on the right, the worse the odds

I think you only make $0.80 profit - the $1 you put up you just get back.

No thats incorrect...

I have been a horse racetrack bettor for 25 years...When you get odds of 8/5 that means if you put up a minimum bet of $2 and the horse wins, you get $5.20 back...thats $3.20 profit, now divide that by 2 and its $1.60 profit for $1

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind being told I'm wrong (see sig.) but I'm easier to persuade with evidence rather than with capital letters and exclamation marks.

Now this I don't understand. You mean, you make a bet, put on $100 and win and I hand you back $100? Really? I'm not much of a betting man, but if that's the way we're playing, perhaps I'd make an exception...

I don't think that which side the higher number was was what was in dispute. (In the UK, gamblers will say "2-1 on" when they mean odds of "1-2" but I don't know if that is also the case in the U.S.)

some things they really need to start teaching in the public school systems. It could save a helluva lot of confusion.

I am a Cardinals fan who follows this site because one of my friends from growing up is on your roster......but as a huge gambler I can clear this up for you guys really quickly.

Fractional odds are represented as a fractional number and show what your profit will be on a one-unit wager. For example, odds of 4/1 means that you stand to win $4 for every $1 you wager. On the other hand, odds of 1/4 means that you must wager $4 to win $1.

In your guys' case, the odds of 8/5 mean that for every $5 you wager you will win $8. So that means that you will be handed back $13 in cash (your $5 you bet + $8 for the win.) Hope that cleared this up for you all.

PS - I hope your team enjoys Cardinals Stadium come February....its a great place to watch a game and the weather should be great. I will be pulling for you guys to come out of the AFC. Good luck this season

Vegas has NE Pats SB Champs at 5 - 1 odds right now.

I go to Vegas almost every month and visit many sportsbooks and would bet heavy money that you cannot find +500 right now. In fact if you could even find +400 today I would be surprised and would play it.

If you can tell me what book to find it, I'll have a friend of mine go check it out today. BTW, if you are looking at those legal size sheets they have for all the sports futures, you need to look at the date on which it was printed. If it was from before the draft, then yes you may see it listed at +500 but that went down the drain within 30 minutes of the Moss acquisition. They often don't print new copies until the old ones are gone or to deviously sucker the novice bettors into betting something worse than they realize. "Let me have $50 on the Pats to win the Super Bowl." only to find out that instead of winning $250, you are only going to win $100 (collect $150 back).

Care to mention which ones? I do believe that 5-1 is available offshore, I just haven't seen it myself yet and am really only using Olympic now.

Pinnacle probably has decent odds but since they cut off American action back in February that's not an option for me (though I realize there are ways around it, I'm not going to bother).

No, the original poster is right. If the payout is 9-5 then for a $1 bet, you get $2.80 back, which is $1.80 profit. The Patriots are favored, but they are not what is called an "odds-on favorite".

2 - 1 odds would yield a profit of 100. You bet 100 to pay 200.

So, at 8 - 5 odds, you bet 500 to pay 800. 300 profit. Those odds suck. Would you risk losing 500 to only yield 300? Off course not.
That's not how it works... The odds tell you what you stand to win and if you win, you get your winnings plus your wager back.

2-1 odds means if you bet $100, you would win $200. So when you go to the cashier with your winning tickets, you are given $300 (your winnings plus your wager).

8-5 odds means you bet $500 to win $800, so when you go to the cashier you would be given $1,300.

Just wait until our first loss. You'll get better odds.

i hate this crap, I wish we were the underdogs again....

We kind of are. The odds still say that in the Us Against the World category, The World is slightly favored.

Maybe they could work it into a unit along with calculating proof in liquor, and volume comparisons between a 34C and 36B.

Well, the teachers could at least be sure that the boys in the class wouldn't be skipping school that day.
