As is often the case, the patriots have signed or trade for one year rentals:
LB/ST Humber
DT Kearse
OG Cooper
TE Bennett
RB Brown
DE Long

There were 2 longer term signings
WR Hogan
LB McClellan

They'll probably try to extend Bennett if he gets in sync with the offense, since he had no guaranteed money.

I think Cooper might be here for a while if Scar likes him.

lots of future comp picks!
Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats use a couple of their 6th/7th round picks for some more reclamation projects of guys that were going to be cut anyway.

Especially now that comp picks are tradeable, Pats could basically just churn them like this at near-zero net cost if they really wanted to. Of course, that would require that their guys ended up almost exclusively in the Hicks pile, and not the Bostic pile.

There's certainly going to be guys that don't fetch you any picks. I think the idea is to put more of a focus on reclamation projects that you think will work out in your system vs. free agent signings. It's simply working the system on a level that most GMs don't even think about that adds a lot of flexibility and larger pool of potential players to sign.

As evidenced by recent events, it looks like the Pats probably target teams that were good talent evaluators, but experienced a lot of upheaval in coaching and offensive/defensive systems.

some late pick candidates:

TE Jake Mcgee
DT Adam Gotsis
WR Chris Brown
RB Devon Johnson

I feel like there should be a distinction drawn between one year rentals (Cooper, Bennett) and camp fodder (Kearse, Humber).

I doubt it happens but if possible I would love to see a Bennett extension worked out for the next 3-4 years.

Gronk-Bennett-Edelman-Lewis to wrap up Brady's last push works for me.

Also TEs give you a better bang for your buck. You will likely not get an offensive weapon as good and impact as Bennett for a lower price.

One year rentals can easily turn into extensions. I think of them as one year tryouts instead.

I guess so.

I think of Kearse and Humber as competing for bottom of the roster spots.

Yup, too bad the NFL will put a cap on how many comp picks a team can have. So we'll have 5 instead of 65 :)

It's already capped at 4. :) but they'll probably screw us and give us as low a pick as possible.

well, if they are all wearing SB rings this next next year they were very good temps........

Actually, I don't see why they'd have any comp picks that year, even if Blount and Wendell sign with other teams.

2018, on the other hand ...
Yea I screwed up. Good catch
