I am not sold on this guy, I never seen him being a playmaker. Anyways we will see what he does in training camp. I still think we are overpaying this guy.

Seems to me like he doesn't need to be a playmaker to be a solid addition. If he can give us 2014 Brandon LaFell he'll be well worth the (relatively low) price.

I agree we are overpaying him. BUT, let's see what he can do with a great QB. He runs really precise routes, and he has decent size and strength. My only concerns are he had the 4th highest drop percentage in the league, and the dreaded "trying to learn the Pat's playbook". Not saying he's a dummy, but this seems to be an issue for every receiver that comes to the Pats. Learning the playbook and gaining Brady's trust.

I'd hate to cut Dola. I love the core of Edelman, Dola, Martin, and Hogan if healthy, that's a lot of shifty guys out there to cover. Maybe throw in Boldin as an outside the numbers guy.

You know, I almost always forget about Martin, but I wonder if he's a bigger factor in their plans than we think. Maybe with a full camp and a different role, he could be a solid WR3. I remember an interview with Brady last season when a bunch of guys were hurt (Edelman, Amendola, etc), and he specifically mentioned something like, "Hopefully Martin can come back soon too." Seems like they like the kid on some level.

Hmmmm... $4 mil a year for this guy... 36 or so catches a year... not sure... and I'm not alone...

ICYMI:

He's 6'1" 220 lbs, 27 years old. Has 77 catches over the last two years, recovery from wrist surgery. Tender is $1.67M.

And...

Seems a little high for Hogan, but BB certainly has intimate knowledge of him and has seen him play game situations against Patriots, so they may know something about his route running that is more appealing to them. I also like the versatility that he can apparently play both slot and outside.

I am also with those who think we should try to keep Amendola, although with a slightly reduced cap number. He really has been clutch for us at critical times, and his punt return value makes him a versatile peg. That slot position is so critical to this offense that I would hate to have it all riding on Edelman. The Amendola/ Edelman combo is very solid depth in my view. Hogan could be an emergency slot back-up but hopefully play more outside.

Keshawn Martin is a marginal #4 WR and a good #5 seriously him and Dropson can fight it out. Martin has never proven that he's a capable #3 he is what he is.

Heard the first year cap hit is at 5.5 million. Buffalo has 4.5 million cap space, so unless Buffalo decides to cut some people he'll end up here.

They can give him all gtd money this year so if he pull a Chandler they can cut him with no dead money like they did with Browner

I'm actually Bill Belichick so what I say goes.

I expect a true outside WR (hopefully Streater) to be signed to compete with Dobson.

Leaving :

Edelman
Hogan
Amendola
Martin
Streater or Dobson

And Martin could be in trouble if Streater (or equivalent signing) and Dobson both look really good.

I'm not saying it's plan A, but I believe he has the capability at his peak. I don't think a WR3 in a system that has a TE like Gronk and (potentially) and RB like Lewis needs to be a world beater.

Wow! He ought to fit right in! We'll hardly miss Lafell!

Too soon?

He doesn't look like it but he's a better athlete than LaFell. At the combine/pro day, speeds were the same but Hogan is stronger with a foot better broad jump and slightly better quickness (shuttle, three cone). Also a better athlete across the board than Amendola, for a comparison there.

Edelman is in the top 10 for drop percentage over the last 2 years. Don't put too much stock in that stat. This is a classic signing who will be a much better patriot than he was previously. He's not just a slot receiver. Hes 6'1 with 220 with 4.47 speed. If he weren't white he'd be looked at very differently. It took years for people to look at jordy Nelson objectively for what he is.

Jones- 1 season of more than 50 catches ($8m per)
Sanu- 1 season of more than 50 catches ($7.5m per)
Benjamin- 1 season of more than 20 catches ($6m per)
Matthews- 0 seasons of more than 40 catches ($5m per.. choose Tennessee because he didn't want to be the 4th option in NE)
Kearse- 1 season of more than 40 catches ($4.5m per. seems like he wanted to stay in Seattle)
