OT: Cam Newton & the race card

Even as a Pats fan I really like Cam and will be pulling for him in the Superbowl. As for the race card, whatever. If your OK with Gronk Spikes you should be OK with the DAB. Politically correct and football should have no relation. LET THE FREAKING GUYS HAVE FUN IN THE END ZONE. WHITE, BLACK OR GREEN.
No, not green. We don't want Jets in the end zone.

Who else other than fans? Watt is white, so there's not really any race-baiting articles for the media to publish like there's been for Newton.
thats kind of my point, media loves him and so the majority of fans do too.

I didn't take a poll, or anything, but I've seen quite a bit more watt hate this year than previously --- think he's achieved that level of attention where people stop being amazed at how good you are + start hating you for it.
or maybe it was hard knocks -- I didn't see that

don't know who this guy is, but here's a random tweet -- and I actually thought everybody liked steph

Steph Curry is the J. J. Watt of the NBA. If he's not on your team, he's an insufferable try hard douche queen.

edit: shouldn't this be in the thread about ppl hating watt cuz he's white?

We're at a point in US history where many people's dislike of a public figure can be AMPLIFIED due to prejudice. However, a thankfully smaller fraction of the population dislikes people who, if they were of a different race or sex or whatever, they'd outright like.

In politics, for example, there are lots of reasons in this divided country for people to dislike Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. But the venomous hatred directed at them far exceeds what's been shown for any white male politician of similar leanings.

By the way -- one of the most (thoroughly unfairly) hated QBs in the league is a white guy. Indeed, he's a famously slow-footed white guy ...

I can see why he rubs people the wrong way but to me all that stuff he does is what makes him exciting. I love the showmanship, the NFL is an entertainment industry and right now he's the NFL's best showman. I don't want to say it's a race situation but I do believe it's a demographic situation. Just for comparisons sake you can look at what Steph Curry is doing for the Warriors in the NBA and say shows just as much swag and conducts himself the same way Newton does but he is absolutely beloved by the NBA community. (On another note the parallels between Curry/Warriors and Newton/Panthers is something to look at). There are vines of Curry dancing on the bench, pretending to smoke a J on the bench, dancing after hitting a bit shot, talking trash to an opposing bench while his shot is still in the air etc but everyone loves that where for Newton people think that's not "classy". IMO that speaks to the demographics of people who watch each sport. The NBA fanbase is younger, more diverse but more importantly it's more accepting of that kind of behavior is more acceptable, Whereas the NFL fanbase tends to trend older and despises that kind of behavior (No Fun League).

I don't have much fun when a player grabs his nutsack, wipes his ass on the goalposts or simulates taking a dump with the football, especially when I'm trying to watch a game with my granddaughter.

As for the NBA, I dumped that game because it turned into a 3-point shooting contest. That had nothing to do with the antics of the players.

Not everyone learns to deal with the complaints. Deal with the complaints about the complaints.

My only complaint is that the first players to complain about Cam's antics were black players, but somehow that has turned into racism.

I love Cam Newton and I love the white tears over Cam Newton even more.
The application of the label of racism to cases where it is clearly not is a serious problem. Sure, it's not as serious as racism itself, but the rampant misapplication of the racism label is certainly ******ing our ability to overcome it. In other words, your current viewpoint and actions are part of the problem.

Thanks for a thoughtful, useful, informed post.

In terms of race, 400 years of slavery, followed by 150 years of institutionalized oppression, followed by a few decades where we are just beginning to address the issue (at the personal, institutional, and cultural levels) and where it is just now becoming safe for white folks to acknowledge the bigotry in our socialization, and all of this makes sense.

Regarding Obama, I've spent about 45 minutes with him, with a few other people without any particular agenda, and he is one of the most amazing humans I've ever met. The role he played in moving the ball forward in terms of race, and the personal price he paid for it, was a great contribution and sacrifice.

A large component of the cam newton hate is that he is viewed as an arrogant black man who doesn't know his place, it also doesnt the help that he plays(and is dominating)the crown jewel white position in team sports of Quarterback. And we all know the history of black Qbs in the NFL and the negative stereotypes that come with it
What a load of crap!

Curious how you calculated 400 years of slavery ...

Well, that's not true....

"Moving the ball forward" is of course really vague, but Obama had a tremendous opportunity to improve race relations in this country, and failed miserably.
