@MikeReiss
Rookie G Shaq Mason, who didn't finish Sunday's loss to the Jets, isn't on injury report. That clears up his absence - performance-based.

@JMC00 may be onto something with a pass blocking orientated OL.

For anyone that follows OL play closely, was Mason really that bad pass blocking Sunday?

On one play, I saw Mason drive his guy inside, but Stork didn't help out and hte guy went around and got serious heat on Brady.

I'm not sure Stork and Mason are on the same page...

Mason has had difficulties all season especially in pass blocking, although he is not the only one. He had problems again Sunday, but so did Stork (a particularly poor game), Waddle and others. Bottom line: There are no holes for RBs and no time for Brady. We are losing in the trenches on the offensive side, and the OL is responsible for part of the offensive problems and poor production since Thanksgiving. It is often said that no other position depends more on integration and teamwork than the OL, and the line is not helped by the constant rotation of personnel (much of which has been forced). One of the things to watch on Sunday, especially now with Vollmer out and Kline injured.

Remember Mason didn't play the game in Foxboro. The OL was Vollmer-Kline-Andrews-Jackson-Fleming and Brady dropped back 55 times. Granted Edelman and Amendoa were full go in that one but that OL played pretty good in that game.

Mason has had a pretty good year given that draft analysis had him probably as a RS/Backup this year as he was coming from a running offense and would probably need time to make the jump to the pros in regards to pass blocking.

Then why not use him for run plays. I think Pats should pound the ball down Phins throats. This protects Brady and sets up PA for nice gains.

The headline is only Reiss' speculation. He is speculating based solely upon Mason not being on the injury report, which is not the same as confirming he was not injured during the 4th quarter Sunday.
Lets not treat his hunch as if it is more than that.
He could be right, but he is not reporting this he is speculating it.

It's going to be interesting to see who starts on the o- line this week. At this point, it's anyone's guess. (Im guessing Waddle, Jackson, Andrews, Mason, Cannon)
It just seemed that when Andrews was in at Center, the interior line played better. That may be because Kline was healthy and we were rotating players in or it could be because we had better skilled players(edleman, amendola and Lewis) so Brady didn't have to hold onto the ball as long.

In any case, I think there is no doubt our O-line is our biggest concern going into the post season.

Oh I think there is probably a good chance of that happening. Jackson needs a game where he gets 20-25 carries to get him fully back into football game shape. Doing it against the lolphins 30th ranked run defense might be a good idea.

Here are some teams running totals vs the lolphins this year

IND- 23 for 100
SD- 36 for 140
NYJ- 34 for 137 & 43 for 207
DAL 38 for 166
BUF 36 for 266 & 34 for 151
JAX 33 for 123

And in the game in Foxboro this year I thought the Pats could have run it more than 25 times (for 95 yards) if they wanted to but the passing game was working very well.

Correct. Jordan Richards came out of the game due to an injury in OT and he was also not on the injury report.

FWIW, I think Mason's lateral movement is relatively mediocre, even though his technique is pretty good (nice weight balance on the snap, fluid hips, etc.). His short stature and short arms make him susceptible to the swim move from taller DTs. I have seen him bull rushed a few times and thought wtf. It's tough to go from not pass blocking a lot in college to pass blocking a lot in the pros b/c you're doing a relatively new thing at a much higher level. It takes time and practice.

Would telegraph the play calls a bit to do that...
I see what you're saying when he comes in at G, but can't you see a FB screen in Shaq's future? I wouldn't put it past BB/McD.

It's entirely possible that Shaq got nicked up on Sunday but is well enough to practice on Wednesday. A little bit of a logical leap from our beloved Mike Reiss.

Somebody looking for me? ... Ummm ... yes ... we are.
