I just finished re-reading War Room and I think it's obvious he does put a lot of weight into perceived market value, if for no other reason than it creates scenarios where he can get additional value out of trades. We have a book on every team and their needs and BB includes that info when he's jumping around the draft board. Those books get updated throughout the draft as well now that it's broken up into 3 days. So it's not correct to assume he doesn't care at all about perceived market value.

I think what many of the draftniks (and fans) are overlooking is another thing related to economics, which is trends. He talked about how Vollmer's tape really only justified a 4th or 5th pick, but they felt he was definitely moving up in the process on other team's boards. so you either take him earlier than the tape says or risk losing him.

I don't know the whole story on Jordan Richards, but I don't think it's enough to just look at a bunch of draftnik websites and see their projections. It misses a huge part of the story, which is the movement which can occur before the draft from visits and interviews and tape breakdowns with coaches that we don't get to see, but play a huge role in the evaluation. It can also happen during the draft due to a run on the position, or a team's other potential targets being drafted so they look further down their needs list.

In the book, BB talks a lot about this process. It's really interesting and insightful in how his mind operates during this process and I'd highly recommend it.
Thanks for this well thought out and well articulated reply. I'll be adding War Room to my kindle. :)

He's very well spoken and has exemplary teeth.

Not sure what importance we place on articulate strong safeties with immaculate dental health in our system though...

Player Bio: Patriots Select Jordan Richards in Second Round

Derek Havens

The New England Patriots selected Jordan Richards in the second-round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Secondly, the position is questionable. And what does this say about Duron Harmon and Tavon Wilson? Two back up safeties Belichick selected too early in past drafts that are currently back ups. New England addressed the interior defensive line, but guard, cornerback, running back and wide receiver all seemed like bigger needs.

That paragraph in the article sums it up perfectly.

This is more about Patrick Chung than Harmon or Wilson IMO.

I think it says what a lot of us thought the second those guys were drafted. Maybe Richards can turn out differently, who knows. When I watched him at Stanford, I saw a less athletic Pat Chung. That's cool that he's smart and has good character, but the athleticism just isn't there. Zenner made him look like an idiot during the week of the Shrine game and he struggles in space against WR's. As a box safety, he's decent but we didn't need another one of those.

I like the Grissom pick a lot more. I thought this pick was another massive 2nd round reach of a safety. I saw this movie twice before.

It talks about the 2010 season, which included a particularly terrible play-off loss...so...might want to skip that part...

Lets look at the 2015 secondary for a moment.

With Community Auditions at CB coached by Dave Maynard for the first two months, DMC will be impersonating Jackie Bradley, Jr and playing CF. Harmon, Chung and Wilson are average in space coverage wise.

Jordan Richards is quick in space. He hit hard. Hes smart. Hes tough. His shuttle and 3-cones are same or better than Chung. Wilson and Harmon's. Besides, Harmon and Wilson are not SSs. Different set of physical attributes and skills. He ran a 4.59 in his workout @ Stanford w/ Caserio there. In the eyes of the Pats, that might have moved him up on their board.

I've come around on the pick. Its fine. He will play in this defense immediately.

After the 1st 30 or so players it seemed like a very weak draft class. One of the reasons BB didn't trade up in 2nd round I think. Also why he probably moved out of the 3rd with 1 pick.

After seeing this vid, Wow very impressive kid. Hmmm him or some thug Meriweather type. I think in BB's mind it is not much difference between the players left. But Richards stand out in character, intelligence and just seems like a guy you want on your team . Yea he might have been around in the 4th rd. but why risk it. He wanted him...he took him. I don't know about you guys but for me after the 1st round there really wasn't anyone I had a hard on about.

I see the logic in both picks. I'm not sold on it, but I can at least see it and buy it to a degree, pending later review, which is different from when T. Wilson was selected, for example.

I must say that the Richards pick was confusing, but the more that comes out about this guy, the more I think the draft experts rated him too low. Richards is smart, has the size and speed for the NFL, and

I love the Grissom selection.

Sure, but on the other hand the message board exists so we can air our knee-jerk reactions. If we just let the players play we'd have nothing to post about.

Exactly. I hated the pick last night and said that on this board. Then I slept on it. Watched some film (non-expert level but I do know what a good football player looks like) Saw that his workout at Stanford produced better numbers WITH Caserio there (see Malcolm Butler and his 4.4 at Alabama Pro Day) and working him out personally. Thought about the current roster. Thought about what he could do and now the pick makes sense to me.

This is already more than a mere trend. It's BB's MO. The head-scratching picks are made in the second day. BB loves smarts, leadership and Special-Teams value, more so than any other coach IMO. I am not surprised that, once again, we were left wondering who the heck is this guy we drafted.

From what i have read, i disliked the Richards pick.

Tavon Wilson's pro day number:
Dates: 03/06/12
Height: 5116
Weight: 205
40 Yrd Dash: 4.52
20 Yrd Dash: 2.56
10 Yrd Dash: 1.60 225 Lb. Bench Reps: 17
Vertical Jump: 32
Broad Jump: 10'04"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.16
3-Cone Drill: 7.04

Jordan Richards'
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 211
Arm Length: 32½"
Hand Size: 9⅜"
10 Yard Dash: 1.63
40 Yard Dash: 4.65
Bench Press: 13
Vertical Jump: 32"
Broad Jump: 111"
3 Cone Drill: 6.74
20 Yard Shuttle: 4.22

His numbers are worse than Tavon's, which is already a subpar athlete at the NFL. And I truly dislike the bench press for Richards. If he indeed does play defense, will he be able to consistently bring down behemoths like Peterson, Lynch or McCoy? Anyway, he sounds like a hardworker and high-intangibles guy, which is HUGE and could make him a great player. I won't be holding my breath, though.
