Sign the Beast XXXVI: Reggie Bush to be our 2015 Vereen?

Bush would be a "step up" from Vereen. ;)

I'm curious why someone disagreed with this, Vereen was a fantastic pass catcher, but one of the worst starting runners in the league, at least in my opinion. Bush has proven ability to gain yards on the ground, even if he is FAR from the best, Vereen does not have that same talent.

I was hoping for Helu. I would take Spiller over Bush. But Bush would be fine too. After that I may just go with competition between White/Lewis/Draft Pick.

Pierre Thomas was the anti-Reggie Bush during his remarkable Saints career: Jeff Duncan

http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2015/03/pierre_thomas_was_the_anti-reg.html

He wasn't a regular on SportsCenter highlight reels, but Thomas was as reliable as the day was long. He fumbled just seven times in 1,145 career touches. He rarely dropped passes. He was dependable on blitz pickups. In general, he knew where to be and what to do and rarely put the Saints offense in bad position with a negative play.

The Saints' Super Bowl run in 2009 illustrates the disparate perceptions of Bush and Thomas. Everyone remembers Bush's spectacular punt return and 46-yard touchdown against Arizona in the division playoffs. Few recall that Thomas was the more productive back for the Saints that postseason.

He gained more rushing yards, caught more passes and scored more touchdowns than Bush in the Saints' three postseason games.

Thomas' weaving 16-yard touchdown catch on a screen pass - his patented play - gave the Saints their first lead in Super Bowl XLIV and might have been the most spectacular single play in the game other than Tracy Porter's interception. And it was Thomas who carried the ball and converted the critical fourth-and-1 in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game.

This is not a knock on Bush, who was a very good player during his tenure in New Orleans. It's more an indictment on our celebrity-driven culture, which celebrates flashy players like Bush and overlooks steady hands like Thomas.

And he has 2500 less offensive yards and 13 fewer offensive touchdowns in those 3 months of his life.

And yet he has a higher yards per carry as well as yards per reception for their careers.

This is a name I continue to forget is a free agent.

He's older but he's been a productive member of an RBBC approach.

If they come cheap I would happily take both. If we don't bring Ridley back I'm not ready to just hand Jonas Gray a roster spot, why not bring in some competition. Bush is a perfect 3rd down receiving back Thomas is a good well rounded RB.

The other positive thing is both guys were cut so they don't count towards compensation picks, which we could be looking at quite a few of with Wilfork, Browner, Ridley, Connolly and Ayers still FA's.

I'm not the one who disagreed with that post, but...

Bush, last year: 3.9 ypa 6.3 ypc
Vereen, last year: 4.1 ypa, 8.6 ypc

I don't know about both, but I'll certainly take one, I think I'd prefer CJ Spiller's youth over both right now, to be honest.

We're not talking about our starting RB, we're talking about our 3rd down pass catcher/potential big-play type of guy. We have Blount and Gray to compete for pure runner touches, Gaffney could also contribute, White is in the mix, we're only really looking for that 3rd down guy. Spiller might be the best bet.

That's fair enough, I just believe that Vereen is extremely overrated as a runner and Bush has shown he can be a competitive runner.

I will also fully admit I contradicted myself with the post you quoted and my post before this one in this thread for even discussing "running" ability when we're really bringing in all of these guys to replace the pass-catching role voided by Vereen signing with the Giants.

However, I would love a 3rd down RB with the ability to disguise our intention, Vereen alone in the backfield was a passing down roughly 84%% of the time I believe, the best scenario would be to sign someone who could at least hint at a run while still being an above average pass catcher from the backfield. I think Spiller or Bush could upgrade that aspect.

Nah...add in Casillas, Revis, and Vereen and we're signing ALL of our free agents this year.

I know because I heard it on patsfans ;)

If they come cheap enough I can't see the downside of having both. I think we need more than just Blount as a between the tackles runner and I don't think we can count on Gray being that at this stage (I think Bolden is more of a special teamer). I think Thomas would be a solid #2 and dependable third down back, while Bush is the explosive, big play guy similar to how I think someone like Percy Harvin would be used. We have no idea what we have in Gaffney so why not let him compete in camp with Gray. RB is a position I think you definitely want to have too many than not enough going into camp because the rate of injury is so high.

I like Spiller but I worry about his cost, and as I said the compensation factor for Bush and Thomas are a plus for me.

I think we'd all love the idea of having either one of those RBs in the backfield. My concern is that the money may not be right, but we'll find out soon enough.

In the meantime, I'm also hoping that Ridley returns on the cheap for one more year.

You're more than likely right, the money won't be right, which is why if we can land something like Johnson/Knighton, Knighton/Ellis, Wilfork/Ellis, I certainly wouldn't hate using pick #32 on Gordon or Gurley instead of a DT/DE.

hmm

I just broke out my Step by Step guide, by superbowl champion shane vereen.

It says here that since the lions made the playoffs, but lost in round one, and the patriots made it to the superbowl, that if reggie bush was to join the patriots that would be a... carry the 2, divide by pi...

a step down.

interesting.

Where did helu sign? i want nothing to do with bush unless its the female kind.:D

Spiller visiting the Saints, per PFT/Florio.

interesting.

What's the step by step guide say to leaving a SB winner/ 4 consecutive AFCCG appearances, for the right to play for the Giants, who went 7-9 (2013) and then 6-10 (2014)?

Well, step 1 is to call it a step up.
