Source said if the Patriots are guilty of deflating, then they're likely using a "scientific" method. Too risky to deflate on sideline

This is just giving an out to all the haters and big mouths, they can say they didn't catch the Patriots but the evil Belichick is doing it somehow
Every new layer added to this "story" is more ludicrous than the last.

By scientific method could that mean pumping the balls up to league standards with hot air and then letting the laws of thermodynamics do the rest?

Every new layer added to this "story" is more ludicrous than the last.

BB controls the weather and science itself. This is truly the only thing they have left.

It's a different world, I don't think the media of yesteryear would have been so cavalier with facts but stories can still spiral out of control. Irsay is a crackhead, Goodell is incompetent but the Patriots didn't exactly do much either.

It really doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out that it's highly unlikely somebody was sneaking around on the sidelines in front of millions sticking needles in balls. And it even more so, it would be damn near inpossible to prove it.

But Goody sits on his hands and let the media control the story. Dquell noticed the ball flat? NFL response- nothing. 11 of 12 balls flat- NFL response nothing. Sting operation- NFL response- nothing. We get "we're investigating."

The only thing to conclude is that either the NFL is completely incompetemt of how PR works, or they wanted to have people believe salacious rumors. They let the story grow, and if they participated in the leaks they helped it. And they have nothing.

But left to their own devices we know the media will twist themselves into a frenzy over nothing, invent sources from thin air. This is a fact of life, ignorance of it hardly excuses incompetence, in fact it ensures it.

Yesterday was the best day since this thing broke, and the day BB and Brady broke their silence and halted the foolish speculation. Goody could have ended this day one by saying it was nothing but cold air, all of this could have been killed or controlled. It left sports media, and it's got a life of its own now but all anyone will remember in 5 years is the Pats deflated balls. It's confirmed I read for 3 days because the NFL couldn't be bothered to say it's not confirmed. Those articles are not getting rewritten, they exist, the bell cannot be unrung.

Florio (who actually has been slightly pro-Patriots in all this) is beginning to show that the Irsay forces are beginning to run out of options:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/23/another-theory-for-deflating-footballs/

It's a clever theory that would skirt but not violate the rules but I'm not buying it for the reason Brady gave at his press conference when he said that he wants the balls he chooses to be consistent with what he gets on the field. For some ball boy to do the physics that gauges all of the factors necessary to have the balls only lose the desired pressure for each game and each condition would require Einstein as the ball attendant.

Anyone know brady's hand size? Did he have small hands at the combine?

There is zero evidence of manual deflation.

Now I guess the Pats are guilty of scientific cheating.

they didn't measure hands until rcently. If you google, you'll find Pioli quoted as saying they are enormous and I've seen over 10", but of course there's probably no actual measurement out there.

Here's my point: Goodell needlessly gave the media hysteria credence by announcing this wide-ranging investigation (40 freaking interviews and a forensic detective?) like they had uncovered a domestic terrorist cell. This fanned the (already unnecessary) flames by overreacting to the overreaction! He could've taken a much more subdued and calming approach in reasonable proportion to the alleged offense. Something a la, "Yes, in this season as well as seasons past, the issue of minor football manipulation has arisen from time to time. We'll look into this particular case, and others, with an eye toward possibly adjusting procedures going into next season. While disconcerting to us, we don't feel it led to any competitive advantage or disadvantage in the game involved."

Instead, we have a MAJOR SCANDAL being investigated by FORENSIC SPECIALISTS because THE INTEGRITY OF OUR GAME IS AT STAKE. This silliness has led national news broadcasts where millions of people who never watch football now know the New England Patriots as EVIL CHEATERS.

Goodell needs to be fired. He should've been fired months ago.

Not only did Goodell elevate this to Code Red status, but all of the half-baked leaks that have fueled the media feeding frenzy have been coming out of the NFL offices. If they were intentionally trying to create as much turmoil for the New England Patriots, they couldn't have done a better job.

You're right, and as if the Super Bowl wouldn't be the most watched program in the country this year anyway, I bet it's going to break records. Too bad the Pats will be the villains.

All Goodell had to do was quietly leak to the usual suspects that there is no there there. Looks like much ado about nothing. Don't get ahead of the story. Instead, we got a string of leaks out of the League office specifically intended to stir the outrage against the "cheater Pats".

Goodell probably thought there was something there. Look how long it has taken the Patriots fans to understand the science. These NFL jokers are less likely to get it quickly because they already think they know it all. Think of almost every media guy, they always think they know more than anyone else and even in the face of absolute proof, many of these guys will say yea I still think its wrong. Watching Kravitz to see if he ever backs down. Most likely will just move on to something else.

I'm still shocked that every time weather is mentioned, people automatically bring up the Colts balls. As I wrote on pft, there are so many reasons why they could have had regulation footballs at halftime, even without the conspiracy theory that they were tipped off so they purposely over-inflated.

When you factor in weather, it's becoming very clear that the ball is going to deflate some. Some people who are much, much smarter than I am pointed that out, and I believe them. So why were the Colts balls in regulation? That's so easy, it's shocking fans around the country refuse to see it.

It's quite likely the Colts inflated their footballs to the higher end of the spectrum, and it's also likely the Pats inflated to the lower end. For arguments sake, let's just pretend they inflated at the same psi. That still doesn't count for the usage factor. Are people forgetting the balls in question were the ones in play for the majority of the game? They had about 20 extra snaps on them and 15+ more minutes in the elements. Between the cold rain and 300lb linemen falling on them, etc, the Patriots balls were simply used more.

While we all know this is an overblown story, it's just sad the people spreading the news aren't doing their jobs and trying to report on both sides. Why is ESPN bringing in crying ****ty former QB's instead of scientists? Why are people interviewing everyone from the Pats biggest rivals over the past decade? Finally, why is this a freakin story? If the tables were turned, would anyone here really care if Luck's footballs were slightly below regulation? No, just like nobody cared that Rogers balls were slightly over regulation during the MNF game the Pats lost.

Argh this is getting me to hate the NFL more and more. Every year it's becoming increasingly difficult to be a fan of that league, but dealing with the stupidity of other fans and the irresponsible journalism is killing it.

The Colts balls are not mentioned at all in the NFL release at all. You are correct that these would be subject to the same forces of nature as the Patriots balls. We don't know if they were ever measured, what their starting PSI was nor what it fell or under what conditions the Colts balls were inflated and initially inspected.

Here's another interesting tidbit. The halftime balls were reinflated on the sideline, which is what lead to the lateness of the first series. A they were reinflated outdoors. So... No owner the PSI might have been similar.

The reason they brought in a forensic team is because they can't find wrongdoing, so instead of conceding that the issue is their protocols they have decided to double down and try to find wrongdoing where there isn't any. I think that the balls Brady like were most likely at the low end of the spec and some may have been under, but it's up to the the refs to disqualify them and they didn't,then the weather lowered the pressure so they were all under.

The league already interviewed those with access to the balls and apparently none of them claimed any responsibility for tampering with them, and imo, none of them did tamper with them so it won't matter if they send them to gitmo because they didn't do it. So the NFL IS either going to have too acknowledge that.that the problem was with their protocols or tell the Krafts they are holding then responsible even though they didn't do anything wrong, in which case Bob Kraft should go Al Davis on them.

I hope you're right, but I think we're making a big assumption that they didn't take the pressure of the footballs. If that's indeed the case and they've been hinting otherwise, they really have no case.
I agree with you that Brady likely prefers them on the low end of the spectrum, but I just have a hard time believing that they could possibly be that incompetent. I guess we'll find out at some point, although it probably won't be anytime soon.

I guess this confirms the legitimacy of "Oval Warming".

Guys, the answer is clear to me; Bill Belichick is a sorcerer with elemental powers.
