OBVIOUS POINT
Revis and Browner are our top two corners and will almost always be on the field (except for goal-line and garbage time).

DEPTH CHART AT OUTSIDE RECEIVER
We could look at this is two ways. Perhaps the answer is the same. Who would start if either of our starters were out? Another way is to consider which outside CB would be active if they are both healthy. I would think that we would want the injury backup to be active, so the answer is the same in either case.

But who is that player? For a couple of games, the answer seemed to be Dennard. Then, Ryan. Now, Butler. Personally, I don't understand Dennard being inactive unless he is truly behind the others. Yes, Ryan could be active only to play special teams. Still, I think that Butler is ahead of Dennard at this point.

PERHAPS, next game Dennard will again be active instead of Butler. Obviously, we don't know.

DEPTH CHART AT NICKEL BACK
Obviously, Revis and Browner are also our best nickel backs. Depending on matchups, I could even see us starting someone else at outside CB and having Browner in the nickel.

However, I think for most games our nickel back is Arrington. It has been said many times that Belichick pays Arrington as if he believes that Arrington is one of the best nickel backs in the NFL. I think that this is indeed the case. Many here think that he is gone next year because his salary of $3M will no longer be guaranteed. I see no reason to believe that Belichick will change his mind on the importance of Arrington.
Our nickel back plays as many reps as our defensive tackles and should be considered a starter. The nickel back plays more than half of our defensive reps. Is someone who plays nicle back at a high level worth $3M a year? I would think so.

I suspect that the backup for now is Ryan, but I have no real confidence in that view. If Arrington were injured, I could see us moving Browner to the slot, and starting Butler (or Dennard) outside.

DENNARD
If Butler is ahead of Dennard as an outside CB and Ryan is sort of the active utility backup CB because of his special teams play, then Dennard seems destined to stay inactive, unless he can beat out Arrington as a slot receiver. I don't see Dennard leaving the team. He is inexpensive, and is capable of starting, a valuable commodity.

Don't forget that because of the playing time Dennard logged in 2012 and 2013, his 2015 salary has jumped to about $1.5M (the same as the original-round tender for an RFA).

I don't see him leaving the team this year, but he's certainly trade bait in the offseason if the Pats keep both Revis and Browner.

I can't help to wonder if Dennard is still hurt

He hasn't been on the injury report for a few weeks now. With that said, I question the accuracy of the injury report to begin with- especially with BB being a master manipulator of such report on a weekly basis.

I think Dennard is a tad overrated hereabouts. He's very good with the game in front of him but struggles when he gets turned (he's an ideal cover-2 CB). I just don't think he fits the man-man nature of this defense, hence the limited playing time. I also wonder how well he fits the slot (nickel).

Still nice problem to have because I still rate Dennard as a backup outside DB

Edited receiver to read DB (bold)

Are you talking about Alfonzo Dennard?

The use of the name Dennard was a bit of a give away no.

aware I used the term receiver at the end, a faux pas on my part.

Huh?
My point was that you mistaking called Dennard a receiver.

That's my conjecture. As football players go, he seems a bit glassy.

I think that's common among CBs.

Trade him to Tampa? :)

Agreed. We are finally able to have solid depth.

I have never been so psyched about our depth at corner.

Which is exactly why I've been a huge advocate of keeping both Logan Ryan at CB instead of safety, and also retaining Malcolm Butler as well.

Per our many conversations this spring/summer, these situations have a way of working themselves out.

Things will likely be a bit different next year one way or another, but let's hope that we're able to keep the core of these players and still have the depth. The position of CB is much too important in today's pass happy NFL, especially with injuries and ever-changing situations from year to year with player turnover.

It would great (and a bit expensive) to keep all six of our corners for 2015. This would take a new contract for Revis. IMHO, the other five should stay whether or not we are able to extend Revis.

In addition to Revis, Belichick needs to come to terms with our safeties, both of which are eligible for free agency. Of course, McCourty could be franchised.

My hope is that we enter start the new contract year with all of the 2014 secondary in place for 2015.
